    Nice to see it's not only NSW branch lines that are in disgusting condition, AK Cars battled to get over 30-40KMh is first parts of the video. My we have let our once grand railways deteriorate over the years, shame! I really enjoyed the country scenery, worth the video alone, thanks Pannier.

    Progress, it now takes a 5 car consist and who knows how many crew to do what one EM car with a 2 man crew would do. Beautifully filmed video, with no annoying added music, just the tick over of the engines.

    For a line that was converted from broad to standard gauge not all that long ago, it's certainly a goat track.

    • @TheDemocrab
      @TheDemocrab Год назад

      It was converted on the cheap (ie. No improvements/fixes to the underlying roadbed, just new sleepers and repositioned existing track afaik) because there was going to be no way to use the line after the NE got gauge converted and has usually only seen emergency maintenance ever since. It's not surprising it's deteriorated so badly.

    Hasn't improved since the last time l went that way and Im retired now lol...I wonder what the cost of running those AK cars was...that money surely could have been spent on the track...however l think it needs lots of work and l bet the local track patrol could tell them whats wrong. reminds me of the track to North Star..and that's another story lol.
    I used to enjoy running a Wheatie up there spend the night at Club Malwala while a crew from Cootermundra or further out would load it for us.....We would pull the train up behind the Club then change crews do the reverse on the return...always arrived at a reasonable time into Yarrawonga.

    I did a journey from Southern Cross to Albury a few years ago, it was Christmas Eve hot 38 degrees too hot the train was overloaded, passengers were in seats, in aisles, on floor, in door ways it was jam packed in every carriage as we got up towards the the Border the train was speeding so fast it tilted and you could feel it lift off the rails...people were screaming, kids were crying, it was mass hysteria ...it got so bad the Guards were locking themselves in as people demanded it stop...it didn't till it got to Albury...there were people injured and physically sick with anxiety...no one came to help, no help arrived luckily it didn't end in total disaster...

    At Oaklands there were two boxlike lanterns which had holes punched in them to denote the gauge yard limit, one says VIC the other NSW. These lanterns are in a little museum at Oaklands.
    I dimly recall seeing a photo of a CPH and DERM at the platform, not sure when this happened.
    There were complex rules about what happened if two trains from opposite directions arrived, Junee and Benalla had to talk on the phone.

    anyone, (with lots of money) can restore trains, trolleys ,, but what about the tracks? a fine example is, the sea shore trolley museum. They, have a great crew of workers, restoring them, it's a wonderful place,, been going there since i was 7, i'm 59 now. The line that goes out, is terrible. after spending millions on the place,,, the tracks suck. Just watching them fall apart after restoring them, isn't a fun thing to see, as the tweek, with all the woodwork,, it's a shame. The line should be longer, and double. the collection there is amazing, and should be looked after with more funds. I know it's not easy, but i'd love to tell someone, to,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, JUST DO IT.
