Hi mate, I am teaching my child, math, from the Trachtenberg System via Speed Math for Kids 2. In fact I was teaching some of my oppos in the Australian Military, the same back when I could see. See one, Do One, Teach One. Having said that, Ive been watching your videos for some time, and they're wonderful. I am making Playlists for my daughter so that she can watch them in her own time. I however am Disabled, and since my last spinal fusion I have become blind in one eye, and photosensitive, hence where once my problem was needing a 1 inch wide pen, hence my University Math I had to do on Whiteboards (well my last exam anyway), now however, I have to live in Dark Mode, hence Ive had to buy professional UV lights and I am reduced to using the same solution on a black glass whiteboard, still waiting for the second. Its taken me 5 years to get to the point where I have my system in Darkmode, and not everything I can see. So was wondering if you might consider doing your videos in blackboard style again, black background, bright colours. Would help me, help her, better. Thank you if you see this, I appreciate all of these videos. I used to be able to deploy a RUclips invert colours plugin, but its gone now. I cant look at them for any more than a few seconds or without sunglasses which never helps much, its kinda like staring at the sun. Anyway, if you could, Id appreciate it. I learn something useful every time I watch one of your videos. Math always came relatively easy to me but I despised the way it was taught in school. There was always this attitude that there was just one way to solve any particular problem and that always seemed to be the most convoluted overly complicated way imaginable. Math teacher. "Oh, you need to get to the second floor? You need to start digging a tunnel north, then collect the material you need to make clay. Build a kiln and make bricks. Then you use the bricks to build a temple. Draw people to your temple and create a religion. Form a society around your new religion and build a city. Once there are enough people and enough of an economy for people to specialize start mining metal. Proceed along the technological progression until you develop faster than light travel, then come in from outside the plane of ecliptic and land on the 2nd floor." I exaggerate but not nearly as much as you might think. My "Why not just walk up the stairs?" questions were never well received. I'm always happy for someone to point out another set of stairs (or an escalator).
This is how I did it in elementary school. It was so fast I was always accused of using a calculator on tests or cheating on tests (even by the teacher). When I taught the teacher what I was doing she couldn’t believe it was so simple!
For the 3rd one it’s the same as 90% of 9. Double & Halve. 9x9, move the decimal. Great video! I think you’re like a coach, give us the tools to exercise our minds. How about some side videos with extra practice questions to accompany the main ones?
I understand what he means now. Instead of working out 5 percent of 18. It is easier to double the percentage to 10 percent and halve the 18 to 9 to get the same answer of 0.9 to then subtract 9 from 0.9 to equal 8.1. Your way is still easier and more efficient though.
@@Ms_Rhind percentage calculations become much simpler when you realize it’s just multiplication and moving decimal points. I find 4.5 x 18 easier than 45 x 18. Not sure why.
Hi, my daughter loves your clips, thanks so much. Right now she is struggling with Index Law and Logarithms in year 10 maths. We live in Lismore and these classes were disrupted by the flooding. Unfortunately her teacher refuses to listen to the classes repeatedly requests for this info. Would you be willing to post videos teaching this? Please?!
I set my equations up a bit differently, using cross multiplication to achieve my answers. For example in the case of 30% of 61. I set my equation up to read 1/30 is proportional to 61/100, then I cross multiply and divide to obtain my final answer. Thus, (30 x 61) /100 = 1830/100 = 18.3.
I got the first 2 Right did the second one differently than you, did the third one differently than you and got it wrong by a little bit. I got 7.9 I realize now that when I broke it in to 25% and 20% that my calculation per 20% was just wrong is all. Oops lol
I was always told I was bad at maths. Perhaps my teachers should have beenn told that they were bad at teaching maths...? (After the first example I did all 3, the same way as you then did...)
When I was in school I would actually do these type of shortcuts but even though I would get the right answer my math teacher would reprimand me for not doing it properly or showing the work.... Consequently, I lost interest in math in math class because there was no way to be creative. I ended up regarding math as Orthodox, routine and full of drudgery.
@@tecmath Kiwi did briefly cross my mind but no Kiwi twang...as an Aussie living in the US 99% of the time people think I am British. Interestingly though, anyone I have met here who is British folk think they are Aussie. When students try to mimic my accent they never, ever sound Australian but more British. It took me some time to realize they weren't making fun of me but that is what they hear when I talk.

I did it using your example, 50% of 61 = 30.5 10% 0f 61 = 6.1 added together comes to 36.6...double the amount, which is obviously wrong, but why?
When you add the 50% and 10% calculations together you end up with 60% of 61 instead of 30% of 61

the way i did it was by doing 3 x 6.1, 9 x 81, and 4.5 x 1.8 respectively
what i do is to find 60% of 42 i put a decimal point so i do 4.2 x6= 25.2

42 * 60% = 42 / 10 * 6 = 4.2 * 6 = 25.2
42×40=16,8
42-16,8=25,2

Do you always multiply the 1st two numbers no matter how high the number? Ex. 2473 would you multiply by 2.4?
