  • Irish Tenor Frank Patterson sings ‘Macushla’ - a tale of love and sadness.
The lyrics for ‘Macushla’ were written in 1910 by Josephine V Rowe, with music composed by Harold White, whose nome de plume was Dermot Macmurrough.
The song became a bestseller and is regarded as an Irish classic, having been recorded by Count John McCormack in 1911, as well as by Josef Locke and Frank Patterson.
Frank Patterson who performs it here accompanied by scenic shots of the Irish coast and countryside.
‘Macushla’ is an anglicised version of the Irish mo chuisle literally means ‘my pulse’, and is also used to address a sweetheart or loved one.
A sentimental love song it is also a story of longing, loss and sadness dealing with the separation of two lovers,
    Macushla, Macushla,
    Your sweet voice is calling,
Calling me softly, again and again,
    Macushla, Macushla,
    I hear it dear pleading,
My blue-eyed Macushla, I hear it in vain.
This episode of ‘For Your Pleasure’ was broadcast on 10 June 1984.
‘For Your Pleasure’ was a long running music programme on RTÉ hosted by tenor Frank Patterson.

The stunning beautiful voice of Frank Patterson remaindered me of a meeting I had with the son of a similar famous singer called Michael O'Duffy, the Derry-born tenor hos tell me the story of his dear departed Dad, he was born in the North of Ireland and even after winning several awards he could not get any work because of his religion, he mo=ved to Dublin where he did find work. He was well known in the late 1940s for his rendition of popular Irish ballads such as I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen, Come Back Paddy Reilly and Slattery's Mounted Foot. Michael O'Duffy won the Golden Voice Contest at the Adelphi Theatre, Dublin, in 1939, and began a career which took him to venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, Carnegie Hall, the Melbourne Bowl and the New Zealand Opera House. Michael O'Duffy also singing featured in several films, including John Ford's The Rising of the Moon and my most favorite film The Quiet Man, starring John Wayne. Michael O'Duffy performed with the Boston Pops Orchestra and was particularly popular with the Irish diaspora. Between 1947 and 1951, he hosted a radio programme on WOR in New York. He also sang with Sandy McPherson on the long-running BBC Light Programme. Later he was put of the singing business by the Fab 4, those other Irish boys the Beetles and he then became a teacher in very well know school in London and may have cross paths with Shane McGowan at that school , and yes John, Paul, George and Ringo are/were of good Irish stock , I got this information from Michael O'Duffy son Rowan , They say it is a small world but it is not

Michael Collins: You mean it's finished? Lloyd George is throwing in the towel? We brought the British Empire to its knees!
    Joe: Yes.
