The smiley badge was designed by Paul Trevillion in 1973 who is still alive at 90 years old, so I imagine he'll get a royalty or he might have signed off that design back then. He's an interesting artist who did lots of sports illustration.
I am in my 60's and the smiley badge is my favourite, largely because of the 'if you know, you know' thing. We aren't a club made for everyone, and having things that are uniquely ours, makes them special to us.
I'm 34 and (albeit I'm a southern Leeds fan [Dad's family from there]) I had no idea about the smiley til the club anniversary when my dad pointed it out in the Leeds shop. It's awesome! Retro simplicity. I'd love to see it back
I once met the designer of the Smiley in a pub in Knaresborough...I think. I was told by someone who I trusted it was him and that he also had a hand in designing World Cup Willie.
Surprised to hear the smiley badge being described as '50 years too early' to me it's more a 60's design rather than 70's. It always remi ds me of the lettering on the Beatles Rubber Soul album cover.
Totally get what you mean but I think I agree that it was probably 50 years too early for the football design space. Now that there is a clear need for simple logos with screens it’s very topical
The smiley badge was very exciting when introduced ,i bought the home shirt with it on and the great away shirt with the shoulder to sleeve blue and white stripes.Paul Trevillion deserves great credit for the smiley, the warm up routines on the pitch, the prematch wave to the crowd etc, it all worked because Leeds under Revie were the best team in the country and it seemed so fitting they were being innovative in other aspects of fan engagement.Bring back the smiley!
Hopefully its not like the previous few years where we get an ugly third kit which is basically the only one we use at away games. That gorgeous blue away kit from previous season was almost not used ta all unfortunately.
The smiley badge is iconic and a design classic. I've never understood why the club hasn't utilised it more over the years particularly given the rather bland shield we've had for years now and I think was a product of the Ridsdale era. Having said that I may be a bit biased having had the admiral kits from the 70s including the yellow away kit until my mum gave them away to a charity shop when I went to uni!
I'm 32. Never saw us in the smiley, only saw one season with the rose. I'd absolutely love a smiley badge again. Never buy football shirts, can't remember the last one i bought, but if they did a proper Leeds yellow with some sort of smiley on it, I'd buy it full price instead of DHGate/China. Just to be one of the numbers and prove it sells.
I used to draw the *'Smiley'* on all my exercise books at school and loved the badge *then* however I don't think we need to be going back to this. I might be in the minority but I like the current badge. Perhaps a nostalgic kit could be bought from the club shop with the smiley but not the official kits IMO
Interesting to look at all the US Supporters Club logos and they almost all embed the smiley somewhere (e.g. over golden gate bridge, etc.) . It's simplicity lends to creativity in graphics.
Loved the stripped yellow kit with the bet 65 ,56 or whatever it was .lol.and put the smiley back on the kit ,if not the 90 s yorkshire badge back on.MOT
I grew up with the yellow umbro kits especially the late 80s early 90s ones which i liked with the yorkshire rose badge and even the yellow or blue admiral kits which i had but for me id love the rose badge back or even the LUFC script we brought back in 95/96
I'm 64 & remember it first appearing. It was out for a while before I realised it was 'Lu'. Hence some of the manufactured kits back then had them on upside down.
The current badge has been around so long it's become our brand. I've just got back from Germany after the opening 2 games and was often wearing a Leeds polo shirt with the current badge on and I was amazed how many waiters, barmen ,hotel staff etc said while pointing to it 'Leeds United ' Same in Spain ,same in Greece ,even Thailand . It would be commercially stupid to change it.
It is as you say,it has become our brand, instantly recognisable.Had similar experiences last year in Mexico City, lost count of the number of Mexican folks who pointed at my Leeds cap 'ah, Si,Leeds United'.
@davetravers4621 I reckon since Bielsa the whole of middle and south America recognises the present badge. I love the smiley logo and have one on the back window of my car but it's not for the shirt ,like the podcast said its better where a little more anonymity is needed like in Pubs or in hostile territory . eg my car is often parked up in Bradford and Huddersfield so I prefer it to be drivable when I get back to it . The smiley logo is like a secret code between Leeds fans .
@@simapark Yes you are right about the Bielsa link, and about car logos-would never have the present one in my motor for the reason you mention. Loved the smiley, still have the shirt like the podcast guy is wearing, although I struggle to fit into it these days.
I remember as maybe a 10 years old with the Smiley logo admiral Leeds home.jersey. Not keen on the smiley but whatever ill buy maybe 2 of the 3 that will be on sale soon. Regarding yellow., 1 of my favourite all time was the 3rd In yellow for Europe of the Packard Puma jersey from late 90s 2000ish the blue was very similar to Lazio's which was our away at the time . Think the yellow was used in the league also as away. The Strongbow Nike in yellow wasn't bad either i had them both.
The ‘Smiley badge’ for me came from the 70s era when we started to see a lot of American drama series on TV, such as cop dramas, based on the streets of New York City, where you always saw lots of graffiti on walls and specifically the Tube/Metro/Underground trains and train stations… so for me the Smiley badge seemed to be influenced by ‘Grafitti, bringing football and street art and culture’ together for the first time, which was unknown at the time, thus Leeds being the first to see that correlation.
Congrats Ed. Last season's kits were the best in years especially the home and my favourite the away. My 6 year old niece loved the pink. Doubt I'll be buying the yellow despite the extra lure of the smiley. If anyone from Adidas is reading can you get Ed in to do some originals stuff? The last efforts were lazy and bland with basically just the trefoil and the crest.....sort it out. Trefoil and 3 stripes.
Always find it weird how people name the shirt through the sponsor as opposed to the maker. Like Packard bell not one mention of puma that made the shirt.
I’m 32 and personally the yorkshire rose badge or the current one but with the gold instead of yellow are my favourites. Not a fan of the yellow on the current badge
I'm in my 40s and never really studied the smiley badge; I just knew I liked it. I've only just realised it's LU in the logo. I'm ashamed of myself. Doh!
Yellow shirts don't sell? I'd be interested to know how last seasons away shirts sold. My guess is not very well, hence why the Yellow is getting a run out.
Whilst it's important to acknowledge and respect our history, surely we need to instead be lookong embrace the now whilst planning for the future? If we're replacing the badge then I would much prefer a completely original design and leave the retro stuff for limited edition re-releases.
Back in the early mid 70's 'the actual' smiley symbol was quite popular. So then the 'new' leeds badge was just seen as a variation of the actual smiley symbol.
I don't mind the smiley badge, I prefer the one we currently have, but I'm not having it because a 10 yr old can draw it. Can a 10 yr old draw Scums badge? How about Chelsea? Rangers? Liverpool? Nope. Coming from the designer of the only shirt I haven't bought in 40 yrs, The Fruit Salad or kebab shop spew up shirt, I don't want to listen to his recommendations. Leave us alone.

I am obviously in a minority here. 69 now and first Leeds game for me was in 63. Seen a few badges in my time but the smiley for me was the worst. Looks like something Radz kid would have designed to go the U10's shirts. Never liked it and will never be convinced otherwise
The current badge is one of the ugliest in the country. It's worse than crap. Almost anything (i.e. apart from the previously proposed salute one) would be an upgrade.

Apparently the sports artist Paul Trevillion designed the smiley Leeds badge and also helped create the 'marching on together ' song.
