    ALSO .........When large sections of the population support an armed campaign of resistance , that means that theres very real legitimate issues .
    If a state falls into conflict , that means its a "failed state" , or failed system .
    The British created and ruled / enforced that system .
    In a "failed state" groups will arm themselves and fight .
    The resistance in WW2 used the exact same methods
    They were also called terrorists.
    A faction fighting for social change, and reform of justice and government is usually in the right.
    The forces that censor and ban their publications are usually the tyrants.

    Whenever I see or read anything about the Troubles, there is always one fundamental and inescapable truth; if the English had never set foot on Irish soil in the first place, none of it need have happened. Anyone out there care to challenge that fact?

    • @TheEaglestar1
      @TheEaglestar1 8 лет назад +17

      That is a very simplistic view of a very complex situation.If you knew anything about Irish/Scottish/Ulster history you would know that conflict is an integral part of our history irrespective of anything the English do.Intertribal war in Ireland has existed since the island was first inhabited.

    • @robcornwell4809
      @robcornwell4809 8 лет назад +15

      TheEaglestar1 I'm aware of the intertribal conflicts that preceded what became British rule. Being related to the O'Neill clan I know for example that they ruled Ulster for centuries and made various pacts with the Normans as well as other Celtic clans before the intrigue with Elizabeth I and I am also aware that if you go back far enough,the Gaelic Scots themselves are descended from a tribe of Irish Celts who settled in the west (the Scotti, as they were known to the Romans.) But the appointment of an English Lord of Ireland by Henry II, followed by the self proclamation by Henry VIII as King of Ireland, then followed by the plantation of English and Lowland Scottish settlers on lands confiscated from the native population, are key events marking the official interference of the English in Irish affairs which sowed the seeds of the Troubles.

    • @TheEaglestar1
      @TheEaglestar1 8 лет назад +10

      Rob Cornwell Very interesting.I see now that you are indeed aware of the complexities and depth of history effecting conflict in Ireland.There are a few points about your comment I would like to expand if you don't mind.The Gaels from Ulster who formed the first Gaelic entity in what is known as Scotland weren't merely settlers,they were invaders.And the Gaels were originally invaders to Ireland as they were not the original inhabitants.Likewise,when you say that there was a "plantation" of "Lowland Scottish settlers on lands confiscated from the native population" this is an oversimplification.This "plantation" operated only on certain counties and did not include counties Down and Antrim.In addition,it was not merely Scottish Lowlanders,many of Gaelic Scottish origin are today found in counties of Ulster,e.g those bearing the name of Campbell,Cameron,MacNeilly etc.Next,the lands on which Scottish settlers weren't entirely "confiscated" from the "native" population.In many cases lands were sold by Gaelic Lords in need of finance.Likewise when you say "native" who really is native? The term is inappropriate for a region which had continual interchange of populace over thousands of years.
      In reference to the present day recent "Troubles" we actually in reality have people with Scottish Lowland ancestors such as Gerry Adams and Bobby Sands fighting for the cause of "Gaelic Ireland" against people with Scottish Gaelic ancestors such as Gregory Campbell and Nelson McCausland for the cause of "Anglo-Saxon Britain".
      There is a huge degree of false propaganda sown for political agandas when the reality is so much different.

    These guys literally talk about this like oh well what ever? I don’t quite understand their attitudes about the whole thing. I don’t understand the whole conflict myself. I’m an American and I had the opportunity to work with a bunch of Irish men and women. I worked at a credit card company in the collections department and there were lots of younger Irish men and women. Apparently there was some kind of plan that the US government worked out with the Irish government to kind of integrate them with the fairly diverse culture in Pittsburgh. This was in the mid 2000s and I didn’t think this kind of thing would still be active in a modern European society! It was definitely “eye opening” for sure! After working there for about a year I found myself hanging out with a bunch of them after work and on weekends. I started to notice that even though they were all from the same country you could tell that some of them didn’t care and that there was something that kept them from interacting with each other. This is when I first started to ask one of the guys who was one of, if not my best friend why so and so didn’t seem to get along to good. He told me that two of the guys were IRA members or at least IRA supporters. I actually laughed a little bit at first because I thought he was kidding but I soon realized that it wasn’t at all a laughing matter. I remember the one guy actually having a kind of sticker or postcard of sorts that he had at his cubicle and I just remember there being some kind of silhouette on it and it actually saying IRA. I thought it was just some kind of Irish patriotism of sorts because I didn’t nor do I still fully understand it. He actually told me that the whole reason that most of them were in America because they were here under some kind visa program that was created to get the Irish youths to learn to integrate with many different kinds of people and to move on from their hatred and to understand equality. I really found it shocking because of how racism and inequality is a big topic here both then and even now 15 or so years later! I definitely know this exists but I have never personally felt that way. I believe that their are good and bad people everywhere and its not the color of their skin, where they came from, or even what religion they believe in. Unfortunately there are extremists that give people a bad name and reputation. I know this is a pipe dream but I just wish all people felt like I do when it comes to this kind of thing. I don’t care what anyone wants to believe or do as long as they aren’t hurting anyone else there is nothing wrong with it! I really get angry with people who come off as if they are extremely religious but when you believe in something different or feel a different way towards something than they do its a big problem. This kind of behavior is the polar opposite of what their religions teach them how to be towards people but their hypocrisy is mind bending! Anyway unfortunately from what I could tell is that most of the people that came to America under this visa program personally didn’t care what religion you were, or what color skin you had, or even what your sexual preference was anyway! Honestly I noticed that their was a good amount of them that were homosexual or they seemed to want to date someone from a different race and either felt that back in Ireland they could never really be him or herself! I even went out on several dates with some girls who came over here and one in particular one event really sticks out in my head. She had wanted to see Amish people where they really lived so I decided to take her for a short road trip to a community about 1.5 hours from where she lived. I don’t even really remember why I asked because it really isn’t anything that matters much to me anyways but, I asked her if she was Catholic or Protestant? Now for the most part this girl was pretty shy and quiet but when I asked this she literally became enraged and said that Its none of my business and went on a rant. That’s a lot more polite than she was when she said it of course! LOL. I was shocked and tried to go straight into damage control and say how sorry I was and that it didn’t matter to me either way and that I only asked to make small talk. She eventually got over it but still never answered my question! LOL. I myself grew up Catholic but I would definitely not consider myself one now. I have become extremely turned off by many different things about the church and especially its stance on several different topics and its hypocrisy as well. Now after getting to know this girl more I come to find that she was actual from Belfast so she was basically born right in the middle of all this Catholic Protestant mess so her reaction wasn’t really as alarming as I thought it was at the moment because she had probably seen a lot of things growing up and was probably scared to actually say which one if any she was. She actually ironically had become pretty homesick and even though we did go out a few more times and I really did enjoy her company she moved back home to Belfast shortly after! I have to add she was one of the most beautiful girls I had ever came across. I had always been attracted to women with darker skin and and hair but she was the exact opposite! She had the most beautiful curly red hair, pale soft skin, and beautiful blue eyes! LOL. Anyways I had never planned on writing a book like this but after watching this video all these memories all came back. I am now wondering if that visa program still exists and if it was successful at all? I know a good number of them ended up becoming married and staying here and for my best friend he is now living in Canada. He actually can’t even come back to Pittsburgh or probably the US at all because I know he had gotten in a little bit of trouble and had to come back to Pittsburgh to go to court but ended up staying in Canada and just ignoring it! LOL

      If you're talking about the IRA campaign for a Free State, then that's a different story, but don't insult their memory by even hinting that the PIRA were brave. They weren't. They were thugs and cowards who murdered innocent people.

      I'm from the UK and I think he is right. When you consider the superior numbers, logistics and firepower they were up against, it takes some bottle to go out and risk everything for a cause when you could just settle for a quiet life, unlike the British troops who were career soldiers on the army payroll. As for the tactics, yes it was ugly but what else could they have done? A full-on confrontation would have been a waste of time against the British army with all its resources; it's not a question of bottle but a question of how best to achieve an objective. Much like the use of Drones by the Brits and Americans in other parts of the world today.

    yes I used the wrong acronym, but the point is the SAS do not target civillians, no professional military organisation does, not targeting civillians is the difference between Guerilla warfare and terrorism. Che guevara was even worse than this...but thans a different arguement. And the troubles were more or less started by cromwell after the irish conferderate wars. TERRORISM IS NEVER JUSTIFIED, END OF

    Maybe its not a great statement but Id reckon its true more often than not
    You wont find rebels organising and fighting just for the hell of it

    Charles Taylor was "legitimate" enough for the UN to give him diplomatic rights.
    The UN kept Pol Pot seat at the general assembly vacant for 15 years , refusing to recognise the new govt , or give it food aid (simply because it was pro-vietnamese )(the population starved)
    I think were arguing about two different things.....Your saying Taylor was a mass murderer and cannibal . I couldnt agree more.

      @lvan Big Nob Not just technically, they lost comprehensively and completely. Their only reason for their existence was the achievement of a united Ireland by the use of the "armed struggle", which failed totally, as it was always going to. NI is still part of the UK and that can only change via democratic means, it's status as part of the Uk is fully recognised by the Irish government and the Irish constitution no longer lays claim to it, Articles 2&3 having been removed. Armed republicanism and its' campaign of terrorism was defeated, there is no doubt about that.

      Your incorrect!! Great Britain is England, Scotland and Wales, Britain is England and Wales And that's according to the act of union in 1707..no part of Ireland was included in the act of union, not then, not now and not ever so maybe before writing shyte you should examine the facts of what is British and what isn't!! Britain isn't a country by the way its a union of three nations. Also Ulster's a province in Ireland and as the six counties sit inside that province it can only be part of itself and the geographical landmass known as the island of Ireland!! Your identity is as false as your whitewashed history. I do wonder what your great great grandfather's would make of your treachery considering your protestant Presbyterian forefathers fought for Ireland against the very traitors you stand with today.. You insult your own heritage with your uneducated ignorance and your lack of historical fact. Wolfe Tone was a protestant, Henry Joy was a protestant. Douglas Hyde was a protestant, Napper Tandy was a protestant, Michael Davitt was a protestant, General Munroe was a Protestant, half of William of Oranges men were protestant and they built the Catholic churches across Ulster when William defeated James for the crown of England. It wasn't a Protestant victory as the battle wasn't about religion. Half of Williams men were Catholics many of whom were related to the protestants by blood and marriage. Your version of this event is an outrageous lie unsupported and so untruthful its not in any history book.. I'll expose your bullshit because a lie will always be a lie no matter how many times you tell it...
