The syncopated rhythm, the drums mimicking a stuck VHS, the blissfully simple piano chords, Thom's haunting voice... A sad, fragile song about a dying person not able to cope with saying his final goodbye to his loved ones directly. As Thom put it: "You know you're in trouble when people stop listening to sad music. Because the moment that people stop listening to sad music, they don't wanna know anymore. They're turning themselves off."
Videotape is definitely in my top 5 favorite Radiohead songs of all time, especially Tom’s solo performance from the basement. It’s really slow and personal, and I appreciate that it’s not super showy or over complicated. The line that sticks with me most is “This is my way of saying goodbye, ‘cause I can’t do it face to face”
A literal banger “Bangers & Mash” does follow this depending on the album version you have. This song is a great Radiohead album closer, in the vein of Motion Picture Soundtrack and Street Spirit.
The best part is that this song is so musically and mathematically challenging. From first moment on its a challenge to be in sync with it, yet, it just works so beautifully.
So great to hear someone react to something other than Creep lol. This album is full of understated genius like this track. Moon Shaped Pool, their last album, pulls you in in a similar way. They barely lift out of this chill mode the whole album. Like you said intimate and melancholy. That pretty much sums up later album Radiohead. They do still produce some more feverish songs like Burn The Witch or There There.
If you want to experience an even better version of this, check out the Live From the Basement version... I love what they do with the instruments (and you get to see the variety of instruments they use to create this masterpiece).
Great, great tune. I can’t believe I missed this six months ago. smh. This album was my first Radiohead purchase. I’d preordered it. My initial reaction upon listening to the album was, “what the hell is this shit?”. On second listen, I was a fan for life. Favorite track: Nude. Second favorite: All I Need. Radiohead is brilliant. 💜💜💜
Yes! Do dive deep into Radiohead - there are so many slow burners as well as geeked up bangers. You can pluck singles, but listening straight through changes the way you hear them.
When I'm at the pearly gates This'll be on my videotape, my videotape Mephistopheles is just beneath And he's reaching up to grab me This is one for the good days And I have it all here In red, blue, green Red, blue, green You are my centre When I spin away Out of control on videotape On videotape On videotape On videotape On videotape This is my way of saying goodbye 'Cause I can't do it face to face I'm talking to you before - No matter what happens now You shouldn't be afraid Because I know today has been The most perfect day I've ever seen
I requested this cause at the time I was trying to shake off the darkness in my head. You see a cousin I am close to had just lost his best friend to suicide. To make things worse the guy that killed his self was married to my cousins sister. I believe music has this amazing power of empathy. I can hear a sad song and feel better afterword's just knowing others have felt the way I was feeling and they got through it. So I can get through it too. I'm feeling better now, looking forward to your reaction to my other request.
Yeah i feel the same way. I often feel lonely, so listening to radiohead or other artist of that calibur really helps me cope with that. Glad your doing well also

This would not have been my choice from this album I actually like the 2006 version better this is kind of an acquired taste its a little odd witch is saying a lot when it comes to Radiohead they do not have any bad songs after the first album per se but a less strange tune would have been better for you I think.
@@ChrisHoltDC He reacted to Weird Fishes from the basement. His only other RH reaction. I was so happy. It's probably my favorite from them and I am a ridiculously rabid fan.

I love what this syncopated pattern does to people who don't know whats coming. The head bobbing goes from a simple 4/4 pattern to head banging.

Reckoner is my favorite from In Rainbows. This is a love or hate song but I love it. Always takes me back to the first time I heard it.
Ditto
WOW! Ive never seen a reaction to this song before. Possibly my favorite song by them, definitely makes top 3.
A very personal intimate song for me.

Tears everytime I hear this song. Doing so now..

A must watch for anyone who loves radiohead

That From The Basement version is pretty magical

This is a grower. It's the album finisher. There are full documentaries made about this ONE song. Just saying.
Full documentaries? You mean the 10 min vox video? Genuine question, Lolz
@@meatisomalley haha, yes, 10 minute full documentaries! ;)
@@meatisomalley The WarrenMusic video was almost 40 minutes long, but not really a documentary. Very interesting though.
This is one of those albums you have to listen to in its entirety. It’s a classic IMO. Each song takes me back to certain period in my life.
The lead singer wanted this to be the first track off the album actually. But they ended up putting it last
An absolutely beautiful song
NATIONAL ANTHEM!
Love this song, but Ed adds so much to the basement version I prefer it to the album version
I noticed about halfway through your head started moving to the syncopated Rhythm. It’s not 4/4 like most people think.
The Radiohead rule is, if they have a version "from the basement" then that is your go too.
1:45 and Im already 😭
Not everything needs to be a banger.
Go Slowly is the last song on the special EP.
No bangers afterward... it's actually the last track on the album.
Left us on a somber note huh lol
Nice!!!
Kinda jumped into the deep end, head first on this band.
Funny because that's the last song on the album.

Do anything from in rainbows from the basement.
React to Paranoid Android
Such a weird choice from In Rainbows. 8th best song.
sometimes logic goes out the window
Yeah. I love Radiohead but there are way better songs from in rainbows I’d love Weird Fishes, love from the basement from

I love the way they ended the album with this.

Excellent band, but this might be the last song I'd request.
