Lost Ollie is an under-appreciated gem and a rare win for Netflix, but seems to have flown under most people’s radars. That’s a damn shame, and one I’d like to remedy.

Dug the shorter form video. Now I need to go find a copy of this and watch it.
Hey so that you know this video was unavailable for a while in other countries (netherlands i know atleast)
Please. Please. *Please* - do more videos like this!!
Finally something good on Netflix that Cynical reviews.
That's always good to hear.
He should watch midnight club. It's actually pretty good
Ha, ha! He said it! He said it!
Well Netflix isn't really short of good shows and movies.
The first positive review ever and it’s the one that gets the fewest views
I didn't think an adaptation of William Joyce's works would be a very emotional mini series involving toys...
...Darkmatters "Power Corrupts" just had its Finale.
Surely you havent missed it?!
"...unless you want those kids to be traumatized..."
Me, growing up with Watership Down, Felidae and Plague Dogs: well, my parents did great...
Don't forget secret of nimh
Or animal farm...
Same but I watched "The Animals of Farthing Wood" with my whole glass, teachers didn't see anything wrong with it
Man, same, though the ones that REALLY traumatized me weren't those: It was Brave Little Toaster, The Velveteen Rabbit and for some reason, Banjo the Woodpile Cat.
The first cos it was just so deeply depressing in so many parts of it, there's like an existential misery in the beginning of Brave little toaster than never goes away. The Velveteen Rabbit (the 1985 Canadian one) Just has a melancholy to it that stuck with me for no reason I can really explain. How everything good is old, run down and worn out, and how the skin horse is just falling apart.
And I have no idea why Banjo scared me, but I was terrified until I was like 18 of watching it, and I still can't shake how nervous and traumatized it makes me but there's literally no reason for that feeling.
FURY, scenes on youtube, I was a tad older but still, the inaccuracy gives me a stroke everytime i sit down to rewatch some scenes
These special effects are better than most Marvel movies over the past five years.
They had time to work on them, you see
Seems like they actually treated their employees correctly
thats what happens when a director actually knows how to properly plan a shot so the vfx team can work their magic
I’m definitely going to watch this but I was curious if he’s ever heard of the film The Brave Little Toaster? It’s an earlier 2D Disney film about anthropomorphic appliances trying to find their owner. It predates toy story and it’s surprisingly dark in places. Lost Ollie gave me some of those vibes.
I haven't seen Lost Ollie (yet), but when he said, "isn't that just Toy Story?" I said, "it sounds more like Brave Little Toaster."
"The Brave Little Toaster" was literally the first thing that popped into my head when he was explaining the plot.
SO dark, good lord. My darkest places bring me to memories of the wrecker cars' hopelessness.
OMG I loved that dark a** cartoon growing up! No wonder I’m a GrimDark fan now!
I heard of it but never thought it was dark
This film is further proof that restricting a show to be more suitable for children can definitely help the quality a lot
and doesn't allow cheap "sex, gore and swearing, depending of how much of what we have a genre"
Sometimes a mature rating is treated as a challenge (childishly throwing in swearing and gore for no real reason). It’s ironically immature in its approach, like teenagers who have just learnt what swearing is and now do it all the time because they think they’re being ashy and cool.
@@intergalactic92 You ask me, sex jokes should either be more subtle if it's widespread or held back to be released as a huge comedic payoff.
Disagree
@@debymello4756disagree
My dad’s friend was one of the people who worked on the animation of this movie, and he took photos of me and my two brothers doing different poses that actually ended up in the movie. One of them was the scene with the car earlier on in the series. It is actually an honour to know someone who helped make this gem
Cynical: "I won't say any spoilers."
Also Cynical: shows spoilers in video.
I didnt realize any of these clips spoiled anything until you pointed out that theres spoilers in the video. I noticed details I otherwise wouldnt have after reading your comment, so you're just as guilty
@@postproductions I changed it.
@@bellabarahona5948thanks
A positive CJ video, now that's a delight. I love snarky sarcasm as much as anyone else, but nothing is more refreshing than a genuine reccommendstion
Cheers
This show has been on my list for awhile, but now I can’t wait to watch it. An emotional story about broken toys (especially stuffed animals) is totally my thing. Cheers for the spoiler free review ^_^
It’s a joy to see this in my recommendations reviews that are enjoyable and easy to follow another great video
Great that you made a review of good stuff, especially from Netflix, as a refresher. I need to see this show.
I am always down for more positive content. the world is fucking depressing as of late, and I can't help but notice I've been saying that damn near my whole life. Sometimes I think what we really need is more happy stuff. not to hide away from the bad times, but to remind us that the good times are still there too.
Watched the show immediately after watching this video. It is truly one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.
I love the positive Videos. They are rare for these kind of channels.
I'm an older guy. A lot of animated films from when i was a kid were horrifying. The Velveteen Rabbit, anyone?
4:10 "Toy Story" my ass! "The Velveteen Rabbit" did it first! Also the first thing that actually popped in my head was "The Brave Little Toaster".
Didn't William Joyce also write the book Meet the Robinsons was based on?
Yep. And Rise of the Guardians too.
The fact that this amazing positive review got no views, but you two negative videos around it get millions. Mind blowing
How sad is that. I don’t blame him for this, I blame the algorithm for recommending mostly negative videos and not enough positive videos.
Yeah the scene at 9:20 is emotional and the voice acting is impeccable.. but did y'all notice the book on the top right called "Letters from Pussy"!? x'D
If nothing else, I would watch this just because it's set in my home state.
Also, accents in Kentucky are very... weird and depend on where you are in the state. In a more rural area (especially further south and east), those accents aren't wrong at all.
Shame this video didn't do better. It seems the internet just wants an angryman.
WTFuck happened to your views my dude
This movie felt like it was straight out of the 80’s/90’s and I was very impressed. I didn’t ever rewatch it though because it made me depressed.
This movie is both magical and heart wrenching. It's grounded the very real and sometimes dark ways we deal with loss and change. Absolutely brilliant.
Your thumbnail is pretty hard to see on a mobile device in the wrong lighting. I'd try changing it up.
1. As someone from the Kentuckiana area, I can tell you the accents aren't from the area. However, this was so good that I didn't care whatsoever.
2.
Netflix: *Adds in ads for no reason*
Me: "I'm done with you."
Netflix: *Releases this tear-jerking masterpiece*
Me: "Damn it!"
3. Guess what? Toy Story itself is a rip-off of the macabre kids movie: the Brave Little Toaster; a movie that featured a scene of a sentient blender being brutally dismantled, a vacuum cleaner tries to choke on his own power cord, and a car purposefully drives himself into a trash compactor. Ironically it's still one of my childhood favorites that I go back to.
This video was a refreshing change. It’s good to see a suggestion of something to watch rather than avoid once in a while. Good editing 😂 I actually watched your Raycon ad.
Seeing a series that's considered good, even when most people's first initial thought would be to compare it to another movie with similar tropes (the lost toys finding their owners one), is inspiring for me! I've had this idea for a story that I've been thinking of making into a Webtoon (or more likely, a comicbook zine since I'm usually nervous to post artwork online/in some social media places, and hesitant to get it out there beyond a small audience).
I had been struggling with the story because I didn't want it to be too derivative of Finding Nemo due to it featuring deep-sea creatures, but seeing things like Lost Ollie doing well helps encourage me to continue working on it (especially since it's technically my first full story, along with some other short story/vignette ideas I have in mind). ^^
Cynical: “I’m currently working on a review for the Bible Man franchise”
Me: *suddenly has childhood flashbacks of my Baptist church showing us the show*
For real though I actually watched that show as a kid and now I can’t wait to see what you have to say about it 😂
Whilst I love your angry rants, it is great to see a positive review! Glad to see you back!
I'm from Kentucky and their accents aren't technically correct, but they're not that far off. I like attention to detail, but I don't think this will take me out of the show. There are several different accents just within the state, so it's not that far from reality.
To me, this show went far into infinity, and beyond what even Toy Story did. I love the power, soul, and love that was carefully put into the characters, the story, and oh goodness THE MUSIC! (Yes, the music was one of my favorite parts of the series.) You really feel the significance of Ollie’s memories right along with him, Zozo’s inner and outward anguish after losing the love of his life, the tragedy and terror Rosie experiences as she watches her friend become more villainous, and the pain, joy, dread, and hope Billy and his family embark together as they face the inevitably of the mom’s death. A shockingly mature, gentle, wholesome exploration of healing and whimsy ❤️🩹🥹
I had to come check your channel to make sure you didn't leave too. Never got any notification for this video at all
Now, lets say, hypothetically, that somebody once told me that the world would proceed to roll me, and made the claim that I was not, the smartest tool in the shed. Which would lead us to look at the facts and see that she was looking kind of dumb, due to the fact that she had placed her finger and her thumb, in the shape of the letter L, located on her forehead.
This would mean that the years would start coming, and logically wont stop coming, that I was, hypothetically, fed to the rules, which would proceed with me hitting the ground running. Which didn’t make sense, to live for fun, in a way that your brain gets smart, yet your head gets dumb, seeing as there’s so much to do, and so much to see, so now I must pose the question, what is wrong with taking the backseat? This is due to the fact that you’ll never know if you don’t go, nor you will shine if you don’t glow.
For you see, you are, at this moment, an All-Star, so get your game on, and proceed to go play, indeed, you’re an All-Star, get the show on, which would entitled you to get paid. That would mean that all that glitters, is indeed gold, and that only shooting stars, can participate in the process of breaking the mold.
2:10 "but the good stuff is there, you just have to rummage around a bit to find it."
that's why I watch reviewers first. I have no time, patience or will (or money) to rummage around for good shows. and in the process, I end up preferring the reviewers than the material being reviewed. so I only watch reviewers ranting or raving about stuff, and I flat out skip everything else.
I disagree that explaining the logistics of who can see the toys and who can't would've made the series better because I think that would've somewhat destroyed the vibe of the series. Imo ollie works best as a representation of billie's childhood and relationship to his mother first and character second. It's never 100% clear how much of the story is literally happening and how much of it is more metaphorical and i think those 'inconsistencies' add to that.
Another interpretation would be that ollie is connected to billie's family and so only members of his family can see him.
thanks for the recomendation, i'm so happy that years after i subscribed you are still kicking ass with these amazing videos
Always great to see a new video from you! I'm currently trying to find a show that keep my attention, so I'll check this show out.
I guessed the plot twist as soon as Zozo explained how memories work to Ollie. But didn't see how short Ollie's adventure could be if he let go & chose the easy way at the beginning of the series.
P. S. Is it just me or is Zozo hot?
Comparison with "Brave little toaster"?
The world would be better if we lived in a society where lactating women could get jobs selling their breast milk as an alternative to cow milk. Just think about it, human breast milk is healthier for humans than cows milk, and we could reduce the amount of cows in factory farms; reduce the amount of cows in general, which would reduce the amount of methane going into the atmosphere and have less of an affect on climate change. Women could unionize to have good working conditions with decent pay and benefits, which would actually make the milk taste better if they were under less stress. Although it will be mandatory to be drug free, and maybe have regular drug tests to insure the quality of milk, that might actually motivate struggling women to quit drugs and get off the streets by selling breast milk. Women with hyperlactation would have an outlet for their excess milk production and be compensated for all the milk they sell, while women who under produce could easily buy the amount of breast milk they need from the grocery store. Just imagine having an omelet, cheesy pasta, or chocolate milk but made with human breast milk; that would be pretty wild by todays standards. The only downside is that drinking breast milk would be normalized and no one would masturbate to the idea of drinking from lactating titties, because that is indeed a problem and everyone totally masturbates to lactating titties. Don't turn this into a copy pasta or I will ejaculate into your nightmares; I am like Freddy Krueger, but horny, and I would totally fill your dreams with spermy wormies.
Just binged It. Loved It.
But the ending could have been better, sue me.
Nono I agree. Zozos death is well deserved but not satisfying. They could have gave them a more happy ending but I guess the lesson is that you will lose people and that's just how life is
From Kentucky here. Can confirm that while there are multiple accents within the state itself, the young boy in the clip is the closest to being most authentic. That clown is a damn Texas accent if I have ever heard one.
Can confirm, Zozo does have that Texan twangy drawl.
Just finished the mini series last night and it was spectacular! Thank you for the recommendation.
My husband would've cried with me if he wasn't too busy trying to comfort my sad sorry self as I was melting into the couch.
Shut up! I’m not crying you are crying 😭. Thank you kindly for recommending this movie, hit me right in the feels.
Love your content. Keep it up!
I was crying too much especially during the last episode, I almost could not breathe
Good to see another video. Love that you made a video on something your happy about, I am thinking of getting my Netflix subscription back for this
I don't know why youtube hates you so much, 3 weeks and your video never showed up on my feed. Not even going to the subscribed channels section.
Now, i'm gonna watch your video. I had to complain first.
Kid stuff can sometimes be just as food if not better than some adult guff, take Warrior Cats (the first series) takes the lives of stray feral cats discribing things from thier point of view. It's a damn good series
Thanks for the subtitles in Spanish 🤩🤗, that's a great help for those of us who watch your videos but don't speak your language (English). I really appreciate it 😌.
I'm from the area this show takes place in. The entire viewing experience for me can be summarized by the 'Leonardo Dicaprio pointing at TV' meme.
I actually began disliking your negative videos and this was such a nice breath of fresh air.
Hope more like this is made in the future.
Every lost toy 🧸 tale is fucked up. They are all allegory for a child being lost and alone. Toys are helpless, children are helpless. People don’t listen to kids. People won’t listen to toys. This is why I don’t like them. I got some shit to work through.
He’s finally back.
Anyone else fins Cj's voice is really soothing 😅
This thing made me cry I wish Netflix advertised this more
But nooo that's not on Netflix's Priority right now
That Jeffrey Dahmer documentary now that's something to throw money at
What can possibly go wron- Oh wait
In spite of the purge at Netflix at least this came out.
thank you for introducing me to this series!
Hi! I'm Saul Badman. Did you know that you don't have rights? The Constitution says you don't. And so do I. I believe that until proven innocent, every man, woman, and child in this country is guilty. And that's why I don't fight for you, Albuquerque! Better not call Saul. Saul Badman, not an attorney.
There’s no such thing as a coincidence. The fact that you’re reading this means that we’re energetically alligned.
William Joyce works just have a habit of making people cry in the best way.
Wow this video was really badly buried, i only got it in my recommendations now
I put this on with my 4 and 6 year old. It wasn't what I thought it was. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Thanks for putting light on something good, makes for a nice change of pace! Little comment to boost the A L G O R I T H M.
PS : Nice addition to put the sponsor remaining time, I dig it!
As one cynic to another, I always enjoy your curdled humour. More!
Regarding the accents. The region they're in suggests that they would have an Appalachian accent, which, broadly, means they would talk a bit slower, and use some occasional archaic language in their day to day (think "afeared" instead of "afraid". for example). The people talking are doing so with accents more suited to the deep South, or midwest (the clowns use of "pardner", for example, is very much a Texas thing). It is very much a regional thing, but I imagine it's like a show taking place in London where everyone sounds like they're about to start their BBC news segment.
Also, please more positive content. thx
Weird, I never got notified of this video. Pretty funny too so it's a shame
Early comment just to lube up the algorithm gods
I was wondering how long you've been absent from RUclips just to realize that you've uploaded a new video only two months ago. And as I see from the views count, I wasn't the only one who missed this video.
What happened? Why did RUclips decided to kill this video so harshly? Weird..
Chess hasn't been updated in almost 200 years and it's obvious the devs have abandoned it. The greedy creators took your money and laughed all the way to the bank.
I remember back in 705 AD when chess was fun. Then they started adding stupid features no one wanted like "Castling" and "En Passant" instead of listening to player feedback and fixing game-breaking bugs. I've been complaining for YEARS about the collision-detection glitch with the horsey. The "clipping-thru-pieces" bug has been abused to death and the lazy devs refuse to fix it.
Don't support this awful behaviour and boycott this company.
So I was playing chess with my BLACK friend the other day and something rather curious happened. As we were about to start playing he asked, “Could I play as white this time?” Why is my BLACK friend being so racist????? Clearly your color doesn’t matter and as privileged white man myself I could not bear listening to these words!!!!!! Black? White? It’s all the same guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Every time I hear a chess player talk about race, they always say stuff like “I’m so glad that I am white this game” or “He was black, so he didn’t stand much of a chance that game”. Seriously, what is up with this blatant racism guys??? It’s getting so bad I am even hearing this sort of shit from some Indian players as well. Your color doesn’t mean anything, you are still the same person!!!!!!
I'm glad that this show is getting some proper love. It was really an unexpected hit this year.
Yay new content
As someone who very rarely is physically moved by emotional movies and shows, I'm almost tempted to call this a challenge and will happily call myself a sociopath! Course, I sometimes do anyway 8D
Edit: Just finished, very great story! And yup, still no tears, but the last scene did bring my wife to tears. She emotes so I don't have to.
Dude I remember seeing the trailer and thinking "I need to watch this" and then I forgot it existed. :/
fun fact
william joyce was a disney animator before becoming a childrens author
Hang in there, you've got what it takes, and your candor about the incels is one of many strengths of yours that shine through.
this reminds me of a book I loved as a child I use to wish they'd make into a movie. Oddkins by Dean Koontz. I just know now-a-days it'd be ruined!
Loved the review and I'll definitely be watching it!! As much as I love your loger and more cynical videos it was nice to see you talk about something you liked for a change, and I would like to see more of these in the future!!!
Nice video, love the positive videos when life is sucky
I have seen the series
And I will only say that Ollie is the purest and most tender character I have seen in a long time.
i went and watched the show as soon as i finished this video and i made me sob like a baby but it was so worth it! I've heard that it's not very close to the source material but for some reason that's just part for the course with william joyce's books
The accents are a bit stereotypical, but they're fine. It's like a cartoon.
Me: huh, why does this video only have 50k views?
The video: 0:11
Me: 😐
You recommending this series got me to watch it and it was great
This video alone gave me flashbacks to the gamer friends you haven’t seen in months ir even years
Without this video I'd never ever find that show! And it's amazing c:
This reminded me of a gem made in Czech Republic around 2010 called "Kooky". I recommend giving it a watch
Shoulda taken place in Texas with accents as deep as that
This series was great and I was a little disappointed when it came out and I couldn’t really find many videos about it
Same,, its super super underrated
I am trying to get it so hard! I begin to despair:(
Cheers CJ I actually need to check this out. Honestly the trailer never sold the thing you're selling so I was gonna skip it but now I definitely won't.
I want a positive review every Once in a while negative Like after things You hate you talk about something you love
Glad to see you're back! Hope everything is well and you're excited to create. Also I'm not sure if you know him personally but what happened to cynic snacks? He just kind of fell off, I hope he's ok.
*SPOILER ALERT!!*
The only "complaint" I have is they didn't have to make Zozo evil to make the themes still work. When Ollie tells him what happened to Nina on the street Zozo could have broken down and realized how far gone he was. Then he could have helped Ollie has a recompense for what he had done and as a way to still love that part of Nina that remained.
This is the real toy story 4
If I’m being honest, I’m not really interested in watching this series mainly because I’ve seen some clips of lost Ollie and some scenes traumatized me such as Zozo beating up Ollie and Zozo killing the Rhino plush and I find Zozo creepy cuz I hate clowns
Hey, you're back!
Ahh yes not toy story 1
Netflix needs to start focusing on one thing at a time so great art isn't lost and everyone can enjoy the beauty.
