Spitalfields had one of the largest Roman Cemeteries here just outside the city.
In 1197 the priory built one of the biggest hospitals in medieval England. The New Hospital of St Mary Without Bishopsgate, (St Mary Spital).
In 17th Century Huguenot French Silk Weavers settled here to escape the Edict of Nantes. Outside the city walls they escaped the regulations of the city livery companies. Many of these houses were built especially for them.
By 1800 Jews moved in fleeing pogroms. Also worked in fashion and in the street markets.
125 000 jews in the East End and converted Huguenot chapels in to Sandy’s Row Synagogue
Queen Victoria’s coronation gown woven here at 14 Fournier Street.

Great video of an amazing area and an amazing house ! Good on the people who stopped the developers destroying another historic area, the modern apartments are ugly and boring.
I remember Prince Charles railing against modernity.
Not just developers, but that trash Tracy Emin too that Joolz mentioned.
My old man rocked up in Spitalfields at the turn of the century to escape the pogroms. He lived there in Folgate St until the 1940's when he met my mum in a bomb shelter during the Blitz. He was Jewish and mum was the daughter of an Anglican Minister from Highgate!
I’ve been to Dennis Severs and can absolutely agree with you…not to be missed if you want to FEEL real England!!
''I like to go in places where I can't photograph anything and I don't document everything, 'cause then it means I really study and experience it''. What a truly wonderful sentence.
Hm, in that case, I'd recommend the Kumsusan Memorial Palace, Pyonyang. You cannot bring ANYTHING in, and I mean anything! ... I had to get special permission for a tissue which I got bc I'm a bit allergic to lots of things.
Oh, and the experience is definitely worth it.
Well done Sir! As a Vice President of a Historical Society here in the States I appreciate the preservation of the Dennis Severs house and the surrounding area. Keep up all the videos, hope to make it back to London some day. Ta from Long Island New York!
These Americans coming over like Sam Wanamaker reconstructing Shakespeare's Globe plus the Blackfriars Theatre or Dennis Severs refurbishing and beautifully restoring a Huguenot weaver house of the early 18th century. Who do they think they are ?
Don't they know if left alone the space where the Globe now stands would be yet another glass and steel tower full of empty apartments owned by billionaire money launderers. Or the Severs House would have collapsed or been pulled down because it would be "uneconomic" to fix it.
THAT'S THE BRITISH WAY.
See Piloti columns in Private Eye ad nauseum going back decades.
I always wonder why planning departments are so petty about little details and then allow people to pull down historic buildings for modern monstrosities?
Lots of brown envelopes
Corruption
What I was going to say
Funny Masonic handshakes may come into it as well.
Modern structures don’t require the artisan skills that the old ornate buildings do.
What a nice surprise on this Sunday morning, a new Joolz Guide video! But wait... a visit INSIDE the Dennis Severs House? WOW ! I hope more places of interest like this one will let you in!
Thanks Joolz, nice to visit inside D.S.house... : )
I know, right?! Maybe people are beginning to take me seriously!
@@Joolzguides high time!
Dennis was brilliant. A man who was both before and behind the times. I understand that he was quite the character. He lived vicariously through the Victorian times. He had no modern conveniences in the house, and lived it. Quite a fellow. He is one of my fantasy "wish we could have a cuppa " people. Good that David is keeping things going for him.
The music is so jolly and your always dressed for the occasion...!!! 👔🎩😁📚👍
..quite the jolly occasion...
I visited the Dennis Severs house in the fall of 1990. Dennis met all the visitors at the door. An amazing experience. I'm glad it's still there for others to see. There was some debate as to whether the cat curled up on the bed was real or not. The cat yawned just then and removed all doubts. 😊
Every area of London is brimming with history...thx for bringing it to us and keeping it alive 👍
See it quick before the money grubbing developers flatten it and build rubbish apartment blocks on it.
...'brimming'...lol
@roeng
You're right. London is brimming with plaques which say things like historic building, monastery, church etc XYZ used to stand here.
BEFORE WE FLATTENED IT.
This visit to Dennis Severs’ house blew me away...what a wonderful atmospheric place and excellent that all the foodstuffs are real and not just models...and how about those wonderful preserved streets...I didn’t know anything like this existed in London with all the ghastly construction endlessly going on...and I just know I have to visit that area this year.. pre-Christmas 2019 would be a wonderful time I think when the house is decorated!
Indeed...although I think they have interesting installations all throughout the year so the house will always look great.
The Dennis Severs House is my favorite place in London. Totally transports you to another reality like nothing else. His life and sad demise are interesting too. Highly recommend his biography of the house and it's evolution. There's also a much longer RUclips video on the house that's not Jooze related, I recommend.
As always, brilliant. The Dennis Severs House tour was just amazing, I have to see it!!! The chap that runs it sound fascinating, the area looks wonderful. Thanks for showing us around.
Take note creative writers - you could weave a compelling story or two from where the French (Huguenots) silk weavers used to live! What a marvelous history.
Thank you for reminding us of what a great city London is!
I want to go see Dennis Severs house, it looks fascinating. I never heard of it before this. Job well done Joolz. As usual!!
Thanks. It's very intresting!
I loved how he let that guy just keep on when he stuff to say about the neighborhood.
He was interesting...and saves me saying it!
Hello from Chicago IL/ USA Joolz! One day I WILL make it to London and I hope you will still be giving tours!
This was one of my favorite tours.......
Your videos are generally very interesting, but this was by far the most fascinating. The gentleman from Dennis Seaver's house was an absolute goldmine of info and you can tell he's absolutely passionate about it. Love t. You're the best!
Bravo for that excellent gentleman!
I am watching every possible joolz guide video and have sent them m M2 all my visiting family Lee and friends they are amazing
Two excellent guides - fascinating details…
We toured this house WITH DENNIS years ago. He was charming and a terrific guide. He died too soon!
Wow, I learn so many hidden jems about London in these videos
This is brilliant Jools. I’ve spent a lot of time around Spitalfields. I love it around there.
My family were French Huguenots who came over to England.
Did they live in Spitalfields?
@@Joolzguides I don't know where they lived but I do know they bore surname Laurence.
There were some in Dublin too, there is a tiny hugenot graveyard right in the city centre, on the north side of stephens green.
I work right in middle of this area. Great history and amazing old pubs.
I always walk past all these houses and it's all Jack the Ripper territory too (as one of your videos highlights) so loads of history to soak up any day of the week!!
Yes, a remarkable place!
When I worked in the city I used to wander round looking at the old buildings, statues, follies quirky buildings and houses wondering what they were and who built them, this was before the internet, I'm now finding out about them thanks to Joolz's videos, would love to visit that Dickensian house with fire in the grate, food on the table and the smells and sounds of horse and carriages passing, street hawkers,
I will be in Spitalfield next weekend. Sadly, Denis Severs house is closed during July. But thanks for this video.
I've taken the Dennis Sever's house tour several times. It's magical and highly recommend it.
I have been watching a lot of your London tours and I really enjoy them..keep up the great work Joolz..thanks from Ireland!
I truly regret only discovering you now, two full years after I wandered about London for a week, totally clueless. Anyway, I just ordered a teeshirt! You will be advertised, on me, in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, henceforth! Please stay safe!
I always try to follow you when you walk around on Google Maps, try to show more street signs. Thanks Julian
me too ..
yes I try to but sometimes forget. This one was in a small area though. i do mention the names though but yes..could do better
@@Joolzguides Don't make it too easy for them, where'd be the adventure in that?
Perhaps if you cut between locations some distance apart.
@@kmgreves ..me three..
Wonderful vid mate, the Greeks do awesome fish & chips here in Melbourne.
I love social history and your channel is fascinating. I come to London regularly (a Leeds lass meeself) but living in Bordeaux. I ´ve started bringing French friends for trips and your work is a goldmine. The work you do is brilliant for heritage conservation . Gosh this is better than Netflix.
What are your rates for tours ?
Oooh thanks. Get in touch on joolzguides.com . By the way, you should go to Dr Johnson's house. The curator is from Leeds too and very nice.
Excellent content as always. You are whetting my appetite for my move back to London in a couple of months. By far my favourite channel on You Tube!
Amazing video. I love London. Greetings from Italy!
Ciao bella.
Wow, never heard of this house, next time I come home I must visit. It looks awsome, thanks for teaching me more about my home town 😀
Fascinating! You've sold me. I'm coming over to London in a few weeks and I'm going to try to book a tour. Thx "Joolz"
You're welcome!
one of my favorites of your videos - I love the Severs house, it's the one museum in London I recommend to *everyone* so it's nice to see a tour of it
You are a national treasure, so knowledgeable & a pleasure to watch. Thank you
absolutely fascinating. These are the things that I love most about London... There's hidden secrets and history vestigia everywhere. Loved it. At 1:32 there's a Stik graffiti I saw in Bricklane! (the muslim and white figures holding hands which I thought was rather sweet when I saw it. Now I realise it's like a common image he paints around London?). I'd also heard that fish and chips was a Jewish creation!
Thank you for the videos . I lived in London from 1973 -77 in HIghgate Village 7 Highgate High Street . London is a wonderful city .
Wonderful video! It's always nice to see one from you! Love that they let you inside, that was a really interesting tour! Take care...
Yes, if only I had access, time and budget I could do pretty good things!
Great Video ..................Informative and Funny in equal measure.
I agree. Transports me to another place and time.
Oh lovely to meet you. Weird Side recommended your channel to me. Great channel 👌🏼👍🏼
Hi Katie. Thanks. Yes, Kai helps me sometimes. He's a lovely man. Why don't you come out and film some time. Drop me a message on my website.
Fun London Guides - Julian McDonnell Films sounds good to me! Will do 😊
The Ten Bells public house was called Jack the Ripper a few years ago, but it was changed back to Ten Bells following some objections made by a pressure group.
awww😭😭😭😭😭 London where I truly love... but I’m coming back around June x
PIP PIP TALLEY HO! Love the videos! Can't wait till June! Super excited about our London Tour!!!!
Se you then!
shame there not a video every day so good there better than the bbc
I agree. You should tell them! They have a whole crew so they could help me do that. Sadly I'm just one guy.
@@Joolzguides i will get rid of news at 6 and have u there five times a week
95% of modern telly is complete rubbish. Nothing really interesting or entertaining, apart from Dan Cruickshank, Suzanna Lipscombe or Lucy Worsley.
Thank you, Joolz. The house where Dennis Severs lived, was fascinating. If you didn't show it, I wouldn't have known it. 😃😃😃
What a fantastic video - I'm a family history buff and currently researching whether one of my ancestors was a French (Huguenot). Surname Bellet - I'll have to widen my search to the silk weavers of London.
So love, and enjoy, your videos, Jules. This, I think, is my favourite. Thank you so much for all your hard work. x
Opening shot: Morris Minor and a Roller - respect to the green one! Edit at 7:31. Split screen, trafficators and rot in all the usual places - terrible shame! Long, long ago I sold a wooden version, the Traveller, when I lived round your stomping ground (Parliament Hill) and with that bought my ticket to Oz, which is why I love your channel from afar, as I know so many of these streets from my younger day!
Dennis Severs house? wow, just wow. I Love the painting idea. Very creative.
OMG! I MUST visit Mr. Severs' house! That is AMAZING! (Would love to visit it on a lovely rainy day!)
Just wondering, Joolz, what the heck kind of wine was that you were drinking? It was as cloudy as a UK sky! 😁💗🇬🇧 Cheers!
Ha ha! Mulled wine!!! It's a Christmas thing!
Fun London Guides - Julian McDonnell Films Oh! Yes I was thinking it might be that, but thought mulled wine would be in mugs! 😁🇬🇧😋
Cheers Joolz! Being a born Londoner I am very pleased with your excellent videos of my home town! Egészségedre! (ha, ha; Hungarian for Cheers!)
Fascinating video. Your videos are why I love youtube. Your excellent content and humour should have a thousand times more subscribers. Maybe you should do a collaboration video with some young influencer youtubers who go travelling, to increase your audience. All the best from Montreal.
Thanks. Well yes, I go travelling too. Did you see my docs on Sicily, Pitcairn, Belgrade? They've done better than my London films. My style is very different from most of them. And they're so much younger than me. I know what you mean though, but one also has to get on well with the person. It's about having good banter and repartee which doesn't necessarily happen if you have the wrong people helping. But yes, it does help collaborating with others I've heard.
Would love to have experienced that home with you. A unique presentation of life in the 17th century
Hopefully Joolz you can help in saving what is left of London!, with its quirky history.
Love it Joolz, as always an informative adventure and escape from the Phoenix desert...
Yey Julian, your channel is the absolute FIRST I subscribed to! You are so much fun to watch. Visiting London in a couple of days with my gf and hope to see you filming there. Time to reach the 50.000 subscribers! Keep up the good work and carry on. Greetings from Amsterdam!
Thank you. Yes, that isn't far off! Maybe I'll even start to make some money! Well, I do it mostly for the love of the art!!
Lovely vid, Joolzie! Love the house, really want to visit it! Thanks for putting this out. Cheers, my friend
About a 15 min walk from Gun Street in a Westerly direction is the HAC (Honourable Artillery Company) established by Royal Charter 1537
02:15 - I do like that. I've only seen that numbering one other place, Hamilton Terrace in St John's Wood (specifically on the larger houses towards Carlton Road on the Maida Vale side).
I love these videos. Great job and thank you for keeping the pleasant and interesting past alive!
Another fascinating video, very interesting and informative,
If your on holiday in london book this guy for an independent tour ,would be amazing
This was a fabulous video full of fascinating history. I really enjoy watching your guides through the lesser known yet utterly intriguing parts of London. My guess for the reasoning behind the house numbered 11 1/2 would be the superstitious belief that the number 13 was considered unlucky. Triskaidekaphobia!!! I grew up in an old house in Sydney, Australia that was 11a for this reason. Our neighbours were 11 and 15 respectively. Amazing how influential superstition can be.
Great fun! Thanks for taking me along with you 😍
I dug quite a few bodies around that charnel house structure! c. 11,000 'stiffs' all told.
Very informative. I haven't explored this part of London.
Really love this one! Thanks and Cheers!
As always,,,,fascinating! Thank you...
Thanks for the tour. I really enjoyed it and the music :-)
Thank you for another excellent video. I love the music!
That vid was very interesting like old house and past of it thank you
Thanks for another great video. You make me miss London.!
Also I am impressed that you are even taller than the doors. : )
Just wondering what to look at and up popped your latest video, enjoyable and informative as always!
London at it's finest!
Love your videos awesome job
Oh the memories,,,Southwark has to be on the list?? Excellent as always, MOJO!
It is...although I've got some shorter ones in that area already. I need to do it again..
Who keeps unliking your vids?@@Joolzguides
Grrrrreat little episode.. I enjoyed it as always... //freddie
Always love your videos and knowledge Jools, where may I may I ask are the intermittent songs available.
Check the links in the text description. Carradines cockney sing along.
Love this guide, always wanted to visit Denis Sevier house, have never managed it. Who does the music for your films, I mean the Cockney style ones? Like your sisters stuff too!
PIP PIP PASS you know! Thanks for the new video 👍. 😜💨🤘
Another great video Joolz. There used to be a pub in Gun street called The Gun. When I was was down on a training course I used to frequent the place as it was run by a fellow Scotsman. There was a masonic Temple upstairs apparently. All gone now, madness. I'm glad that chap is saving those places. One of my favourite areas of London. Iv'e taken loads of photos round there.
When are you going to visit Edinburgh ? I'd love to see you do a Joolz guide here ;)
Cheers

ha!Well if I did one in Edinburgh I'd need your help!

It's not always fun but this one was very interesting. It's nice when they actually let me in!
Yet again excellent video! Cheers
Thanks!
the quality of your camera is good, the final video is good, love it
It's good in low light and works for me!
Forsooth it seems like it was along wait for another of your wondrous, inspiring videos. Well worth it though!
T'was only but a fortnight Judith.
Welcome back Jules and co.
Who does all your research. Its absolutely amazing!!
Except for that awful looking stuff in the wine glass at the end; what on earth is it
I do everything in my videos except when the camera is pointing at me. Someone else has to hold it but I film the rest, reseacrh, edit etc... Oh...the mulled wine....It was daytime and freezing outside.
@@Joolzguides
And very well you do it too!! I dont think I would like mulled wine
If I was a millionaire ,(wishfull thinking),I'd buy a house just like that, absolutely full of original character, well done to the man for doing that!
Very enjoyable
Really interesting tour
Always a pleasure.
joolz, could you do a video of Queens Park and Kilburn ?
That was a really interesting one, thanks.
Another great video!
At the end of your videos you stop in to a pub and have a drink to say cheers. How about telling us what you are drinking and some info about the place you are in. Then someday you could edit a video into just the pubs you had a drink in lol.
