  • The Obelisk is located fairly close to Seaton Delaval Hall and is "supposedly" to commemorate the unfortunate fate of Admiral George Delaval who died at this spot in a freak accident on his horse when his foot got caught in the stirrup and the horse galloped off across the fields dragging him along.
As you will see the fields are still wet after all the rains but we were lucky and no flooding was reported locally although there was some significant damage to structures along the coast. You can see the sea and the wind trubines in the video which will give you some idea of how far away the coastline is.
Just a short clip but good reasons for that :)
Admiral George Delaval was only left £100 by his father, but managed to amass a vast fortune through his naval and diplomatic careers. He was the younger son of George Delaval of Dissington, and nephew of Sir Ralph Delaval (1641 - 1707), under whose patronage he started his naval career. His wealth enabled him to buy out his squabbling and impoverished relations and rescue the Seaton estate. Inspired by Castle Howard, Admiral George approached Vanbrugh in the hope he might repair the old building at Seaton. Vanbrugh decided the house was beyond repair, and drew up plans for Seaton Delaval Hall. Work started in 1718, but neither patron nor architect saw the work completed. Admiral George died in June 1723, having fallen from his horse. The estate and unfinished hall passed to his nephew, Captain Francis Blake Delaval (1692 - 1752).

Hi Suki yes it’s a memorial George Delaval who got dragged by his horse to this spot ( foot caught in stirrup apparently) It’s about 900 metres from Seaton Delaval Hall (his home) Fields were very squishy 🤣 so were my boots 🥾 when I got home haha 🤣 Thank you for popping in 👍🏻🤗❤️🙏🏻

Greetings from Canada Ray! 🍁 As always, beautiful drone footage of the surrounding countryside. Interesting history behind the obelisk . After all the determination and often required risks taken to reach the rank of Admiral, how sad to have died in such a way. A fluke accident doing something that you do every day. I’m curious to know if Seaton Delaval Hall was ever completed or still sits unfinished. I know you mentioned that you were expecting heavy rains in your area. How did you fare? I hope all is well with you. Appreciate the video, even a short one. 🇨🇦🇬🇧🖤👻🎃🧡👻🎃🖤👻

Hiya Jill it was rather muddy in that field 🤣 my boots 🥾 looked like diving boots and probably weighed about the same haha 🤣 Just a short clip of this structure as there was a private land sign 😬 why? … I have no idea because all that’s there is this obelisk and mud 😂 but I guess it’s the landowners prerogative to erect a sign of he feels the need. Yes a sad way to end up on (or partly on) his horse 🐎 Uk weather has been really bad with some places under feet of rain, thankfully here we were lucky although it’s only stopped raining for one day 🤣 I’m getting webbed feet 😂 Hope all is well there and your week is going great. 🙏🏻🤗❤️🇨🇦🇬🇧
