This REALLY helps with a piece that I am considering arranging. Thank you for the historic perspective and for breaking things down in "bite-size" elements. PS: Subscription statistics are nice but non-statistical data (eg. teaching impact, number of lives touched with quality musical foundations that you assisted in creating, etc) may never be measured and are just as meaningful (if not more!). Best from Maine USA.
Thank you very much for this little lesson in counter melod. I'm really trying to learn how to arrange for acapella and this is a great start, though I'm coming from your video on the...uhm Yesus I'm forgetting the name of the concept in general. You talked about harmonic frequencies, fundamentals- the harmonic series. Yes. That was also very helpful because you had examples with voices so no I can actually hear the differences in my head. SO thank you very much and keep up the good work.
You helped me a great deal! I’m in a choir as an alto. We are singing “ If ye love me”Thomas Tallis ! I can’t read music so this helped me understand what my role is!
I really really love the way how you explain the concept of counter melodies. I'm a high school Math teacher from the Philippines. I have a number of graduation composition songs - to inspire school graduates. Hope I can learn more from you about how to arrange acapella songs. I am inspired by how passionate you are about sharing your skills in music.
Thank you for explaining this so clearly and with beautiful passion and even some good history. I'm writing a pop song that will have a choral verse and I am excited to include a counter melody. You inspired me in breaking things into simpler terms and I feel empowered on where to go!
Are there further resources you recommend to get a handle on counter melodies besides trial and error? Would understanding how to write fugue be useful in that case?
is it normal to sometimes end up indirectly/"accidentally" changing the chord progression after writing the countermelody/countermelodies (that still sounds nice) ?
Yes, of course! This can be a nice surprise for the audience as well, especially if you've used another chord before and they don't expect the change. If you check out my video on descants, I talk about some classic Christmas arrangements where this happens to great effect, such as "O Come All Ye Faithful" arranged by David Willcocks :-)
if you notice when he talks he always lands his most important keywords at a full head tilt left then full tilt right.. this is where u focus when his head lands at a full right or left tilt lol
thanks for this informative and comprehensive video!
You made this topic a lot easier to understand! It makes sense now! Thank you SO much!!
Thank you, I'm happy to hear that it was useful to you! 😊
One needs only to listen to the relevant style of music 🎶 🎵 and the theory will be clear
you are god sent for a song writer / producer like me ..love form India !!
Brilliant breakdown, thank you so much for the knowledge!!

Hi! That's wonderful to hear; I'm sure it'll turn out beautifully! 😀

What songs do you know with really good counter melodies? 🙂
"Got to Be Real" by Cheryl Lynn (produced by David Foster) and, more recently, Cradle Hymn by Kim Andre Arnesan.
mozart requiem confutatis, verry good countermelody, fin video, hilsen en annen nordmann

Frère Jacques was written by Jean Philippe Rameau. 🇨🇵💯
07:18 Note that one of the "Happy birthday to you" 's has been dropped ...
08:01 ... and another one bites the dust.

Your video are nice, but swith off the background music when you speak, it distractions and out of context
can you keep your head straight when talking?
No, he's not a robot like you.
