The "it's easier on my new instrument" is so relatable tbh. When I got my new flute (after like 10y) I immediately started playing my difficult piece and the sound and my fingers were going so fast my brain didn't follow! You don't need a good instrument to start, you just have to enjoy its sound but when you're starting to be good at it, then the real difference can be felt (I'm not a pro btw).

Brett's does indeed sound darker and Eddy's a lot brighter. Personally, I prefer a darker tone for myself, but I don't mind brighter sounding violins if the violinist is really good. I feel like darker tones are slightly more forgiving for your playing, whereas if you play poorly on a bright instrument it just hurts the ears.
I realize that it has never occurred to me that they have a personal life. I was suddenly thrust with the prospect of either of them married or being fathers for real and for a while, I doubted everything I knew about them. For some reason, it's hard for me to see anything other than two teenagers who are socially awkward and miles away from starting a family.
Btw, Eddy is looking so cute with his hair flicks these days.

Your violin sounds AMAZING. the difference really is stunning. Kurt is a master maker for sure. Glad the finally know who the maker is! 3:26 about the tailpieces, nooooo, Eddy's is also one piece. It has just been carved to had a sharp ridge down the middle. It's called a Hill style tailpiece. Brett's is called the French model.
I'm a luthier and fittings repairer/sourcer as well as a violist so if anyone in the comments section (or the TwoSet lads) have any questions feel free to ask me.
Brett is basically correct about the two-piece back though. To add to that though, acoustically there's not much of a difference except that a one-piece back takes a little but more time to carve (from the inside) because there is a process called "plate tuning" which you're all free to look up, and what that means is that when you tap the wood in certain places you'll be able to hear certain pitches. So for example if you carve some wood, tap it, and hear an E but you're aiming for an Eb you carve out some more wood.
Generally speaking a two-piece back is easy to tune because it has mirrored halves. You don't have that quality in a one-piece back so it takes slightly longer to balance and tune because it's quite unpredictable at times.
Also it's interesting to me ( at 4:26) that Brett liked the sound of Eddy's and so he chose the same design. They both play on a Guarneri Del Gesu violin model which shows Del Gesu's working style of the 1740's, which is the equivalent to Stradivari's Golden Period that you might've heard the guys talk about in other videos.
There is so much variation between De Gesu violins though so, yes, they got rather lucky in finding two violins that have very different tones. I thought about this when watching another video - I was certain one of them was going to get a Strad model, and the other a Del Gesu.... just for a stark contrast! I remember vaguely that one of them played a genuine Strad in another video and everyone agreed they (I 'm sure it was Eddy) really suited it. That's the only reason I'm surprised at the choice to have the same model. But I guess these guys are like brothers and it'll work for them - their musical personality, technique and playing style is more what we will hear from violin.

How much do these violins cost?
Oh, so cool! Do you have any experience working with bird´s eye maple? I would be interested to know if it behaves different while carving and what you think about the tone quality? Is it more prone to breaking while heatmolding the ribs?
I am no luthier but I did just finish building my first violin in holiday courses under luthier supervision and started working on my second one. A fellow instrument builder from these courses had this beautiful bird´s eye maple and I like the distinct look of it and would love to buy some for a third violin, but don´t know if it´ll be easy enough to handle for a bloody beginner like me. I wouldn´t want to waste expensive tone wood by ruining it.
Also, I did quite struggle with carving the bridge, do you have any tips on how to make sure the feet don´t get too slim while carving?
And how can I recognize if the soundpost is not fitting perfectly where I cannot see? I do have mirrors and looked through the endpin hole but I am just not entirely sure it fits the top plate without any gaps.
