2023 z970r John Deere compared to hustler

- Thanks to John Deere I’ve been able to test some really great machines. This is a brand new unit with a 35hp Kawasaki carb motor. 60 pro deck that hydraulically lifts by a button integrated in lever’s. The deck lift is super responsive and works great. This unit MSRP for around $21,800. The Michelin tweels are an $1100 upgrade. Forward speed 12mph. 24” rear tires.
The Hustler hyperdrive is a 21 with a 37hp briggs & Stratton fuel injected motor. It has a 66 inch cut deck. Forward speed 16mph. 26” rear tires.
MSRP $18,000
The hyperdrive is a smoother machine. It rides over terrain smoother at faster speeds. Both cut great in everything we tested. The hustler up hill has less front end jump. Down hill both seemed on par. The hustler had pneumatic tires the John Deere had a tweel. The John Deere going sideways on a hill felt less stable due to its high seat. I think I would enjoy the hydraulic deck lift over anything I’ve tested. It’s slick and responsive. John Deere can cut closer to landscaping having one tire straight in front. Giving your deck room to cut closer without the wheel in the way. The huge advantages that John Deere has over other companies is there support. They have such a huge network they can keep you up and running if your a company doing this full time. I’m not a landscape company and they make me feel as they would if I were. The out reach and support they have given me makes me know you can count on them. That’s Hugh if your doing this for a living.
Thanks for watching. Hopefully this helps you in someway.
Good ol Wells. Seat feels great. Gotta love it. 👍
He is a funny dude. I Love him so much man. I can’t wait until he can drive the machines for me
Great job helping your dad out. Your a cool little dude. 😊
Wells loves testing the machines as much as me.
@@americandream_89 good afternoon buddy. Hope you and the family are doing well.
@@ethanh9535 I feel your pain buddy. I stopped dealing with dealership years ago and I get it to a certain extent they have to make money. But they would mark it at little to no less than a new one. I have used Facebook marketplace over the last five years and had excellent success.
Best wishes on the sale and maybe someone will see it on here. Feel free to comment on any video with it for sale. I could care less. Have a good weekend buddy.
Thankyou so much for sharing with us
Your son will know all about Rideons, he will end up, an expert 🤣
I run this so so of a machine everyday. The only feature i like is the ofset wheels, i was going to mention you can get even closer by backing up and inching closer to the nook. But you did it. Ive noticed every other mower deck is in line with the wheels. JD said nah lol
I agree man. I would not want to run a JD every day. Great mower as for cutting but so many things could be better.
Great comparison
Thanks
Sorry I keep commenting on your video, I'm still watching towards the end now. the arms can be adjusted, if you look back at some of my videos they came installed wrong from the dealer only being held in with one bolt on my scag. Also the arms were very loose on a Gravely that I borrowed and did a quick review on and compared it to a scag. Depending on the mower you can usually tighten the arms with just a few wrenches, I do like a positive firm feel on the arms and if you move the arm forward and it's too jerky you can usually adjust the response by the lever attaching to the hydros and believe it or not even improper fluid in the hydros can cause jerky issues. I realized this when I drove a bobcat and another machine that had zt4400 hydros, one was jerky one was not, that tells me that there's room for error everywhere when these things are put together. sad we have to go over them with a fine tooth comb before we evwn start mowing with them. This was the case with my new tiger cat, it leaked in five places as you know overnight and I never even got to mow with it. The dealer said that if I would have engaged the blades then I would have been stuck with it, which I completely disagree with but not having mode with it sure did help them buy it back easier. The dealer is everything, I realize they will smile and come to your house and cook you dinner to make a sale but once that machines in your garage and you have problems with it you have to play their game unfortunately. I started to become a thorn in their side pointing out legit problems but quickly realized that they were not going to go to bat for me when it came to warranty issues so I washed my hands of scag completely. Scag never had the decency to pick up a phone and call me matter of fact they never communicated with me, I had to reach out to them on another issue. Don't get me started about scag LOL. Thanks for the video.
Your good 👍
I like hearing the info. Yeah I’ve adjusted several mowers hydraulic feed and lever pressure. My wife’s opinion was more leaning towards the lever difference of power to pressure. The hyperdrive has the smoothest hydraulic pressure out there. But it’s also easier to achieve acceleration because it’s so much faster than majority of mowers. So it being her first time on a zero turn she felt it was too easy to gain speed on the hyperdrive making her feel nervous 😬 the hyperdrive at lowest throttle can keep up with most mowers. To help perspective on it’s speed. Where as the John Deere she could flat out push the levers and not gain much speed.
I’ve got some JD equipment and really like it. Seems well thought out and never have problems or breakdowns. I do, tho, take good care of my investments! Rode both of my sons on dozers, articulated trucks, tractors and mowers. My Dad did the same with my brother and myself. Just a father/son thing I guess lol.
JD makes great stuff. A little expensive compared to other brands.
I’ve got so many people on here tripping about my son on things 😂 if they only seen things off camera.
A lot of folks don’t understand the country way of living anymore. I rode on the back of a pickup for over 100 miles just to get a cow when I was around 12 and nobody thought anything about it then. Look at what your doing with your son, how my generation was raised and then look at today’s world. I’m not ashamed…….. And I may get a Z500-Z700 now that I’ve seen this video. Thanks friend!
11:18 it’s because the mower needs to turn and if that wheel sticks out you cannot get as tight into turns without running over stuff or just not being able to mow.
This is excellent engineering (offset front wheel for closer trimming). I wish my Gravely (which I like a lot) had this feature. I also have a John Deere compact tractor that I love. This kind of small thing is what separates Deere from others in my opinion. I am skeptical about the hydro-deck. Seems like unnecessary complication to me. I like the tweels but have no experience with them. Kawasaki engine has been great in my ZT. I wonder about the difference between a stamped deck and a welded deck. My Gravely's welded deck is a tank. Would this Deere deck hold us as well? I love this Deere look and am trying not to be a homer. I must admid that my Graveley had been great, even though it's orange :-) and rides rough. I prefer quality and toughness over anything else. But the Deere engineering and design are second to none.
there were some positives and negatives about that that I didn't like I actually was going to opt for a slightly lesser model like the 930, I forgot about the different model numbers after I walked into that dealership, the guys that assemble my Scags half ass now run the show at the John Deere dealership so I said hell no, they didn't even want to talk to me anyways so I walked out of that place. I did post a quick video sight unseen my first time looking at a deer and I liked what I saw honestly and I wanted to potentially buy one but after that interaction I had at the dealership I won't touch a deere now. I read a lot of issues on the forums with that mechanical chute on the other model, some things are nice and beefy but some things just don't make sense either. I can't pay for that overpriced green Kool-Aid LOL
Would you recommend Side or Rear discharge on a zero turn? I have aprox 9.5 acres. 5.5 acres of grass to maintain. 4 acres is a pond.
I would get a side discharge so that you can shoot all your grass away from your water. I also do not think that the rear discharge vacuum as well but I’ve only ran 2 brand’s with it. Walker is bringing some out this week.
🔥
i just bought a Z994R with a 72" deck. I hope its a decent mower. It seems to be.
They are a great mower. Pretty much all upper tier mowers are great these days. These videos aren’t to talk down about any brand in particular. It’s more to give you the full picture of each Mower and the benefits. I do truly think the hustler hyperdrive is the best high and Mower out. But John Deere makes an excellent mower.
Hearing protection is a good idea. Especially for your son.
I normally wear AirPod pro buds and my son has over the head ones.
pretty sure the front casters are like that so 2 of them fit better in a trailer. my exmark mowers are like that too
Thats awesome.i have a e130 a fiew years old great motor lots of power but to me their so light weight and cheap lol.like my wife says be happy u have one because with what we make we shouldn't own one.i guess I get jealous.i can't afford a more heavy duty one
Life is full of wants. Everyday is a blessing. If you have something that gets the job done and you’re happy that’s all that matters. Thanks for being open. Most people try to front
@@americandream_89 ur rite
I guess instead of being jealous I should be happy for the person and be happy with what I got
I have a 2017 z920m 1000 hours. Mulch deck triple bagger. My 5th Deere at least. Won’t run anything else. Twills and run flats. Stock battery. I’ve done key switch. starter. And belts that’s it
Thanks for the info.
Curious as to why you would never run anything else?
if you want the actual top of the line zero turn get yourself a diesel 997R thats what I run everyday for Pasco County Schools while Im working my grounds things a absolute beast! our district is slowly phasing them out for the 930m
I’m not sure a diesel engine on a mower makes since. Unless you ran it 7-9 hours straight every day. They cost a ton upfront with the only sales pitch being fuel savings as in no difference in cut. Believe me I love diesel engines way better than gas but I just can’t see it in a residential mower or even a high end landscape business.
Video crew haha! Does your wife like filming? Mine was okay at first, then she said I complained a lot but then when she realized what I was complaining about then she agreed that the scag was all screwed up. She's a mechanical engineer so she gets it, she can look at any piece of machinery and point out flaws within seconds, I don't have another mower to test but if somebody drops one off at my doorstep like they do you I'll be sure to go through it and give them my honest opinion. But the way I review mowers I tell it like it is, and some manufacturers don't like that type of free advertising lol. Keep the Hustler man you've got it all decked out, don't buy anything green or orange haha.
To be honest, it’s a 50-50 shot whether she will enjoy it or not. I’m picky on how I want things videoed. She has picked it up better every time. But I totally understand she wants to help she just doesn’t share the same passion or aspect of view. As in she likes testing things but could care less about videos. So over time I think it will become better for both of us.
That is sweet your wife is a engineer. I can fix about anything my wife on the other hand can cross thread milk carton 😂 she is left handed to though ha
Striping with a jd is different too. You have to watch the casters nothe wheels.
I noticed that it’s a little harder to do until you get adjusted using it. My neighbor has had a time trying to stripe his yard with his JD.
👍👍
Love the points from a ladies perspective
Deck raising and lowering is a problem if malfunctions, jd says, there is no going around this, hustler needs 55 pounds of force to raise deck, don’t understand not getting the rear discharge, wider opening. I’ve got 10 acres and I really like the hustler 72” rear discharge, $18k, jd is $21.5k for the 60”. Warranty, speed, and price is much better
I didn’t like the deck raise on the jd as much either. It’s odd, Spartan uses the same style. It was a mess the first 4-5 years they were produced. They now have a fix
I couldn't get anyone to help me at our local John Deere place. It's too bad, cause I had cash burning a hole in my pocket! At that time, I think I ended up buying a Gravely. Then a couple Kubotas, and a SCAG later. Huge mistake, HUUUGE! :) (does the JD Green/yellow color combo bother anyone else but me? :)
From what I’ve gathered, it really depends on your location. It seems like some companies are good in one area but horrible in another. As in the dealership, not the machine. Here our John Deere dealership seems great. I’ve not used a Kabota yet how do you feel about them in comparison to what you’ve owned?
I actually like the John Deere color scheme
@@americandream_89 I will agree with you about location, it does play a part! Honestly, of all the mowers I've owned, I probably miss the Kubota Z724X the most. It was a well-built machine (Kawi engine as well). It's not as comfortable as my current SCAG Cheetah II, but it was one fine machine that I wish I held on too.
How was the cut quality on this vs the MOD deck?
I'm not certain on that as I never got to use the MOD deck. But the John Deere deck cuts great.
@@americandream_89 Ah ok. Its prob the same. I am trying to decide between a 950R 27hp 60 inch MOD deck or a 970 35hp 60 inch deck with a chute blocker. I am coming from a 1026R 24hp with a 60 inch deck. Which do you think would be a better choice? I got 3.5 acres all flat land but very bumpy in spots. Sometimes the 1026R would bog down in some of the grass that was thick. Most of the time it was fine. I do have a fenced area that with a side discharge blows grass on fence to avoid blowing in pool and same with an area with some trees by a bed...I just blow it on the driveway. Doing mulch in those areas would be nice.
@@GitSumGaming I’d say go with the 950 and save the money unless you have perfectly smooth ground. You will not be able to go full speed as the Deere is rough on bumpy terrain. The deck is exactly the same so the only time you would see a small difference is if you only cut biweekly.
@@americandream_89 Ok thanks for the advice. Yea I tried a SCAG turf tiger and a Ferris 3300 and the SCAG was ATROCIOUS on the ride in bumpy terrain. The Ferris was comparable to the Deere IMO. It might have rode slightly better but not much.
@@GitSumGaming was the scag a turf tiger or tiger cat? The turf tiger’s I’ve tested acutely ride great as they run a 26” tire like my hustler hyperdrive. Just in my testing I’d take the scag over the Deere
John Deere’s “top of the line zero turn” has a stamped deck, instead of hand fab deck?? 😳
This is true
But it won’t stripe like a fabricated deck
@@americandream_89the Deere decks do just fine.
@@austinnewman5265 if your okay with just fine. I’m not I want the best
It’s not a typical stamped deck. Very strong and no corners inside to catch grass.
2:52 only thing that sucks is all the bearings are Chinese made.
Yeah. I’d say majority of companies use cheap Chinese bearings
bearing are very reliable
I can always tell when someone does not read his oner's manual. They let their children ride on the mowers.
Come back to learn more. Thanks for watching
@@americandream_89 you want w ok worry about me coming back. I really don't want to see children killed by mowers. Like I said before you don't know anything about zero turn mowers. You never said anything about the hydro transmissions. You spent a hole hour talking about the electric lift system. All you did was ride your child around in a dangerous manner.
@@americandream_89 I was just thinking about a man who was letting his child ride on his tractor. The man was bush hogging. The little boy fell off and the tractor ran over him. I still remember hearing the man screaming. He sold his place and moved away. I really don't know how he lived with it.
You see man I don't see taking a chance with such a precious gift from God.
@@altonrowell613 I fully understand where you are going with the idea. Your concern is noted.
@@americandream_89 I saw a child killed by a bush hog. You won't ever get that out of the you're mind.
John deere had a better cut
Your deck is to close to the tires
Explain better? Which mower
You trying to compa that John Deere to that Hustler. Man you don't have enough knowledge to make a comparison.
Scroll on key board warrior 🤣
@@americandream_89 I just tell it like I see it. You need to do your research on your subjects. So one has a electric lift , tweel wheels and one red feals better to you. You would have done better if you let your son do the review.
@@altonrowell613 your in John Deere dream land man. I will absolutely run circles around any John Deere on my hustler laying down stripes you dream of 😊 I’ve tested many machines and would bet what ever I could school you easy. I see your a hater and only wish you could be in my place. Good luck I’ll keep making you jealous
Hey man, anyway we could chat / message some more about your hustler? I’m intrigued by the machines and would love a real world review. Thanks

Every year in the U.S., more than 9,000 children go to the emergency room for lawn mower-related injuries, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.
I don’t doubt that……thanks for your care
Yup I don’t even let my teenager/21 year old touch mine that’s a very powerful piece of equipment if he falls off while those blades are going or just gets run over they weigh over 1100 pounds. Many parents in my neighborhood pull that stunt as well I’m just waiting for the 911 call.
