That approach of Rosewall’s at 15:10 was excellent. Normally people aim deep when approaching but here by aiming short Newcombe would have to cover more distance and deal with a low ball by hitting upwards.
Rosewall, the greatest touch player in the history of the game. This guy was the greatest in my opinion who stood at about 5'7" tall and used his marvelous skills to move his opponent around and took apart all the bigger power guys of his era. He probably had the slowest serve ever in the men's game but with amazing control and discipline beat them all. This rubbish they play today with the much bigger rackets and rocket serves but with complete lack of finesse would get smashed by this giant of a player.
Newcombe was a better athlete than he was given credit for. In his era he was incredibly dynamic. I think that he truly proved his greatness when he beat Jimmy Connors in the 1975 Australian Open final. Newcombe was supposed to be past his prime and Connors at 23/24 was just heading into his best years after coming off of an unbelievable 1974. Rosewall is not the kind of player one can look good against. Newcombe kept his cool here and came through.
Wimbledon eluded Rosewall for ever. This particular final, Newcombe later described, in the whole of the centre court Newcombe's wife was the only who wanted him to win.
Wonder if there was some guilty conscience there in the wimbledon crowd. In 1954 they wanted the ageing drobny, a favourite, to win v the 19 yr old rosewall. Drobny did win but they couldnt will rosewall to victory in 1970
@@kingarthurusatenniscoach1415Go back to 1970 and play either of these guys in this Wimbledon Final with the equipment of that period, they will make you look like a hacker.
@@kingarthurusatenniscoach1415 yeah, obviously he knows nothing about the great Aussies back then. And, how different the game was. Given modern training. diet, strategy, and rackets, Rosewall, Newcombe, and Laver would be among the top ranked players today.
The one common weakness is that this generation of men lack powerful length ground strokes, passing shots. All go to the net after the serve even if the serve is weak. One can see what. Borg did to win.its not a criticism but Borg won until a better serve and volleyer came along - McEnroe then came Becker who served everyone off the court then edberg and Becker then Sampras who had an unreal serve and volley hen Federer who had it all
The rackets and ball and grass so different The grass today is hard the ball Slazenger is heavy and the racket. Great players on all eras. Those wooden rackets only had one sweet spot. Similar to golf
I was pleased to watch this--brilliancy from both players. Great tennis!

"Budge/Riggs destroyed the game." Bill Tilden.
yes, one dimensional as well as the synthetic clothes an peds they take,,,no volleys
Tennis used to be a form of art with finesse. Nowadays everybody plays the same one dimensional game. Remember Tom Okker!!!!
Rosewall had such a slow 1st serve. Amazing he was so successful.

Did George Lazenby star as Rosewall ?
Playing with wooden racket bad grass great tennis. Different today The racket is forgiving
All that was left was legitimate tennis
Standing behavior during play and a wooden racket that should be standardized
It's like a ladies match on a Sunday afternoon. How times have changed.
they hit the ball hard just that the rackets and different grass..

No moustache Newcombe, never saw that before ...
Wow. These guys could beat by 12 yr olds.
You write like my five year old.
I don’t think so playing on that grass and with wooden rackets The 12 years old would cry back to mummy

Yea well newk beat conners too
I wanna see Andy Roddick go back in time & smash some serves to these guys. He can borrow the de lorean from universal studios.
Roddick would never have got to this final in a million years. He would have been bamboozled out of the tournament by about the third round.
Still, Andy would have lost. Roscoe Tanner was an amazing server of the 70´s, he never won Wimbledon.
Roddick would have to use a wooden racquet and those old puffy slazenger balls.
