The cup song originated from a game, which was then done with the song in a RUclips video, which was then put in the movie. The cup thing has been around for a loooooooooong time

It originated in another video, a girl on reddit did it, Anna Kendrick saw it, the directors found out, and wanted her to do it in the movie somewhere because they thought it was really cool. And they became her friends, she was auditioning to get in to an acapella group, so yeah, of course she had to impress them.

I tried learning the cup game as a teenager and it didn't go well.
This is a traditional camp song that then was used by Pitch Perfect for Anna Kendrick's character Beca's audition to join The Bellas, were they gave the rhythm a lyric to make the character more unique. This rhythm has been around for a long time at least a good 20 years. I learned it like 12 years ago in a youth camp! We used to play it between 50 or so people after lunch or dinner, it was really fun and it takes a lot of practice to get it right at a fast speed! keep trying Jim, you would get it! Just let me tell you a little tip, count, there is a sequence that goes like this: One, Two. One, Two, Three One, Two, Three One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven Good, luck!
I think I would be even worse then you are in the cup song, I remember doing it as a kid (without the song, just the cup moving) and really, really sucking at it, so I'm proud of you for doing so well.
