    Tubshroom + Universal Stopper Combo Kit: geni.us/kABbu7l [Amazon Affiliate Product Link]
    A couple of years ago I reviewed the original Tubshroom bathtub drain strainer, and at the time I was quite pleased with its performance because it caught all the hair going down the drain, preventing it from clogging up, and was fairly easy to clean. However, there were a few caveats to my praise, firstly, if your drain was a little too big, it would fall in and sit flush, preventing proper operation, as it turns out, the silicone material is actually somewhat porous allowing it to develop mold stains over time. As you can see here, after about a couple years of constant use, there are these unsightly black mold stains that developed pretty much all over, and these can’t be removed even with scrubbing and bleaching.
    Thankfully Tubshroom listened to the feedback from their customers and launched a new stainless steel version of the Tubshroom that addresses, surprisingly, all of these issues. Inside the package you’ll find the updated drain strainer which now features a curved top design with three posts, or feet, around the top portion which is about 2.5” in diameter. At the bottom is a removable black silicone gasket strainer with holes larger enough to let water through but catch and collect any hair that goes into the drain. What’s more, the Ultra edition comes with three additional various-sized adapter gaskets so whether your tub drain is small, medium, or large, you should be able to find a size that fits as it accommodates drain diameters from 1.25 up to 1.75” inside and the gaskets are really easy to replace.
    While this silicone part still might pick up black stains from mold and mildew, I guess you’d never really know since you wouldn’t be able to see it. But if you do want to replace it every so often to avoid the ick factor, these adapters can be purchased separately. With the Ultra edition, there’s no chance of the device falling into your drain and plugging it up, since the three feet lift and keep the curved top above the drain so that water, hair, and whatever else can flow into the catch basket below. When choosing the adapter size, make sure that it fits snugly but comfortably inside the drain pipe. You don’t want it to be very loose, or for the gasket to get curled up inside the pipe.
    Just like the original version, when installed properly, the Tubshroom Ultra allows the water to flow freely down the drain without causing the water to backup or accumulate in the tub. Even if we wash a whole lot of hair down the drain, water continues to flow without getting clogged. When it’s time to clean it out, you’ll find that the debris comes off pretty easily and can be discarded in the trash. In the 6-months we've been using it, it's stopped a ton of hair from going down the pipes, and since we’ve been using it, we haven’t had one instance of clogging that required us to fish or snake the pipes to clear it.

    I am new widow. That is just to say that my husband did everything, everything, everything. Ok, after several attempts to redo the drain, I decided to purchase the Tub Schroom Ultra. I was happy to see your video. What you said makes mostly sense to me except that I have a universal stopper with it. Originally I thought thatt the stainless steel part went into the drain and then the stopper would fit into the the other end. Having watched your video, the stainless steel piece with the three prongs, sits on the top . Now I am wondering how to use the stopper. I am starting to guess that I would pull the Tub Shroom out and replace it with the stopper. Having said that, any hair will go down the drain. I know it would take seconds for my husband to have this and perhaps he would have bought something different. I have had the Tub Shroom for several week and was looking at the package for a long time before I took the pieces out of the packaging.Am I missing some knowledge? Thanks for the help from a newbie. Marilyn Tremblay

    • @ReviewedByPhil
      @ReviewedByPhil  Год назад +2

      Hi Marilyn. You are correct. If you want to to use the tub stopper, you have to take the metal strainer out of the drain first then plug the drain with the stopper. You are also correct that to let the water out, you have to remove the stopper, but this would allow hair to go down the drain unless the metal strainer is immediately placed back into the drain. Unfortunately, this design just isn't the most practical if you want to have both a hair strainer and frequent use of a stopper.

      Hm, interesting product, but personally I'm not sure it would work with my plumbing. Any time we've had to snake our pipes for the tub, the clog was wayyyy past the "cross bars" that sit right under the plug. I'd be worried that we'd actually be sending the hair an on expedited path to clogging up the pipes, which is why we chose the "catch and release" method of the Tubshroom in the first place.

I've made sure to clean it often, but it still collected. Also if you don't mind a lil feedback on your video, I wanna say great editing and great commentary, and OCDers/germaphobes might appreciate it more if you cleaned your tub before recording. Some of the mildew is off putting to look at at times. Otherwise thanks for the wonderful review and recommendation!

    Do you have to remove to take a regular bath. My reason for lying is to prevent random kids items such as sponge animals and water beads from going down the drain. I haven't installed it yet since I can't get the screw out to remove the drain.

    • @ReviewedByPhil
      @ReviewedByPhil  4 месяца назад +1

      Yes, you would have to remove the drain strainer and insert a plug to block the drain for a bath. Then at the end of the bath, you would need to reinstall it after taking the plug out.

    • @ReviewedByPhil
      @ReviewedByPhil  9 месяцев назад

      Yes, it should still work as long at the rubber gasket touches the sides of the drain pipe. It's okay if it's a little high, since it's designed to let hair and stuff go into the drain to be caught by the rubber gasket.

  • @RustySteele87
    @RustySteele87 Год назад

    Is it a problem if the adapter is a bit too small to fit snuggly in the drain? The next size up is a bit too big. The smallest one fits well but doesn't fit snug

    • @ReviewedByPhil
      @ReviewedByPhil  Год назад

      I think the silicone gasket on the bottom needs to at least touch the interior walls of the pipe to ensure that nothing is slipping past outside of it. The smallest gasket with the "fingers" might actually accomplish this without feeling snug or tight. I'd check with a ruler though, just to make sure.

It costs just over a penny a day to have installed which prevents hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in services/repairs by keeping pipes clear.
