I'm a step dad. What made my life complete was when my (step) daughter asked me to walk her down the aisle, and the first time my (step) son called me "dad". I keep every birthday card they give me because the notes inside all begin with "Dad,". Norhing makes me prouder than that.
This is a beautiful song, praising the men who stepped up for children not their own. I am married to such a man & I am so glad you also were given this gift. ~ And Brad can make you cry or make you laugh. He has beautiful love songs like 'She's everything' or he can make you laugh in songs like 'I'm still a guy', 'I'm gonna miss her' & 'Tick' for example. He is an exceptional guitar player too, so a good example of that is in his duet with Keith Urban, with the fun song 'Start a band'. Highly recommend. Brad doesn't have a bad song. 'When I get where I'm going' with Dolly Parton will definitely make you cry. LOL

I have seen this from both sides.. I have always had a great relationship with my father, but he and my mother got divorced when I was 5. When my mom remarried, she married the most incredible guy who poured everything into all 4 of us kids. He became a troop leader in Boy Scouts with my brother up until my brother got his Eagle Award! That set my brother up for going into the Navy after graduating high school. Because he's an Eagle Scout, my brother's rank right out of boot camp was an E2. He always went to all of our concerts and soccer games. Took us camping and on vacations in our motorhome. He taught all of us to mow the lawn, to change the oil in our car, to change a tire, and even to change brake pads, rotors, and calipers ... my sisters and I, too! He taught us all to drive a stick shift. He wanted us to be self-sufficient, to do things for ourselves... and if it was something we didn't know how to do, we had to learn. We would ask questions usually having to do with our homework, and even though he knew the answer (most of the time), he would just say go look it up! LOL! We always had the best holidays together. It wasn't about the gifts, it was always about family. I didn't realize until I was an adult just how much my stepdad did for us.
The other side of this is that I was a single mom with one son until he was 9 years old. I met my husband who made my son and, his whole life!! He didn't have any kids of his own but it wasn't long before my two guys became best buds! My husband is a Firefighter/EMT and our son always loved to go to the firehouse and climb in the engine and the ladder truck! A couple years later our son asked us if my husband could adopt him, so we went to the probate court and filed the paperwork! It was such a happy day when the judge signed our application... and he had us each put one hand on the stamp for us to make it official, together! Our son is now 30 and my husband and I have been married for 21 years. My husband's been the most incredible father to our son. Our son's now working at the firehouse with his dad! If I hadn't met my husband, I don't think my son would have become a firefighter/EMT He has grown up to be such an incredible man and I know it's mostly because of the relationship he has with his dad. I feel so blessed and grateful for the life we have together!
Unfortunately, my stepdad is very ill and has been for some time now. He is now at home with a DNR in place. He doesn't want any more treatment other than to make him comfortable. Hospice comes to help him and administer any medications. He can no longer dress himself or get out of bed. He has a few days to maybe a week left on this planet. I wrote a 12-page letter for his 70th Birthday last month. I thanked him for everything he ever did for me, and for all of us. I told him that I loved him, and said "You'll always be my Dad". We all cried. You never know how much time you have left... enjoy every moment!
The part that makes me sob every time is the scene bringing the baby home. When the dad is looking at Brad with his new baby, and he’s so proud. I can never hold it together😢

My stepdad married my mom when I was 11 and had a baby with my mom when I was 14.
When my wife got pregnant with our son, people kept asking if I wanted a boy or a girl, and I said I wanted a boy because, you know, wanting to have a legacy and the big brother to look after and protect younger siblings and stuff.
I remembered at that time that when people would ask my stepdad the question when my mom was pregnant with my sister, he would always say he wanted a girl. I thought it was strange at the time because what man doesn't want his first child to be a boy? Maybe it's a little politically incorrect of a thought to have, but I think dudes will understand.
When my wife and I broke the news of her pregnancy to my parents, I asked my stepdad why he wanted a girl when my mom was pregnant, and he told me that he already had me as a son.
It never even occurred to me all that time that that was why, and it is the most loving thing anyone has ever said to me.
I met my step son when he was 4. He's 28 now. My brother still teases him about when he used to say "Mr. Bwad, I want to go to Burter Ting." lol. This song always pulls at my heart strings.
