  • I live full-time in my RV and camp for long periods of time far from grocery stores. Storing food in a mobile home can be challenging because it's such a tiny house! Now, with Covid Quarantines, I've taken my Food Storage Hacks to a whole new level. I'll show you how you can store MASSIVE amounts of food in anything from a campervan, to a class A, C or Fifth Wheel to a tiny house or regular house on lockdown.

I always, ALWAYS have 4 18 roll pack if TP in stock , since last December when first seeing Italy and Spain shut down and knowing this was serious I started prepping, not the crazy people stripping the racks but buying extra each week of canned meats and paper goods WHEN out little Walmart or Walgreens had them, we live in a little lake resort town. As of Nov12 2020,I have a years supply of paper needs and most canned food items for two people👍🏻 Not ever stripping store shelves , always leaving product for others👍🏻😊 Please lets not lose our care for others by grabbing everything off shelves.

You are a prepper. A common sense prepper, just like me. Great job!! I love Auguson foods. Newbys do need to know that long term food storage containers are good for the longest time when stored in the original sealed packages in a cool, dark, dry location. If it’s too hot or the original containers are opened the shelf life is much shorter.

Hi Robin, I'm hoping to have my bus conversion done by mid spring. I'm also hoping to convince my 88 year old mom to go on the road with me. I have been caretaker to her and my aunt. My 94 year old aunt, who was mostly bedridden, passed away in September. Getting out and traveling would help get our lives back on track. That's why I chose to convert a bus to make comfortable for mom. We won't give up our home, it's the family gathering home, but I plan to travel extensively throughout the country and Canada. Can't wait! You're research has made my preparation for life on the road easier. Your Amazon affiliate products are wonderful. Thank you so much for this video! My husband and I live full time in our 26 ft travel trailer. I’ve been stocking up for months. I’m prepping shelf stable foods as well. I’ve got Augason farms, and Mountain House long term foods. I’ve saved up mostly can goods, boxed foods such as pastas, rice, beans, etc. thankfully two years ago we tore out the bunks in our camper and turned it into extra storage, so I’ve got four bins of food stashed back there. I also have the chaise part of my sofa (has storage underneath) jam packed. My pantry is only contains the foods I use on a daily basis. Us tiny living folks learn to use every inch of space for what we need 😊 Great job Robin! Better safe than sorry!

Yessssss! Now you’re speaking my language! I’m a couponer and the savings has helped me so much with getting my RV and setting up to travel (finally! This winter). People thought I was crazy to get a freezer for my RV, but I knew continuing my stockpiling habits would help me manage my budget on the road.
My tips: if you have a freezer, stock up on meat and produce when on sale. Most freeze well. For example, chicken breasts can run $7/lb. I buy at $2. We had two sales this fall for 97 cents! I freeze breasts in pairs, which is perfect for Instant Pot recipes. Before I had an IP, I would cook meats when I bought in bulk and then freeze. You can then take out only what you need. It’s much easier to reheat 1-2 breasts or a small amount of something than to have to defrost a block of frozen meat. Especially useful for 1-2 people.

It has helped us a few times, such has the time my husband was injured at work and Workmans comp denied his claim. We were 4 months with no income! We did have savings to cover bills. I live in my 19 ft Airstream, so I’ve had to get really creative with storing extra food in case I can’t go shopping for an extended period. I don’t have a big fridge, nor do I have a big cupboard. Therefore the back of my truck has to hold all of my extra food in plastic totes. I was very frustrated as I was building my little stockpile because I couldn’t remember if I had something and also I didn’t know where I put it. So I took the time to make an inventory list on my tablet. When I use something I change the number on my tablet. A second column alerts me if I need something, so I know what to buy on my next shopping trip. Anyway, just a different idea when space is a real issue.

We were using some for craft items, and found that they are perfect for a medicine cabinet, first aid, spice storage and seed storage. They stack, and can put tape on the end stating contents, and when pulled out can readily scan all content quickly. Also can add a rubber seal cord and make waterproof. And it's cat proof. 😂

Robin, My Son’s Mother (vanlife) channel here. I’m really happy to see another Nomad concerned about prepping.
About two years ago my storage unit was broken into and I lost about $16,000 worth of goods not food). They stole about $200 worth of #10 cans of Augustine Farms dehydrated and freeze dried foods. And they stalled my three day emergency kits, also. What they did not steal, I found interesting. I probably had at least 15 dozen cases of canned goods that they never touched.
I now have my short term food storage up to you enough for one person to last year. I probably only like a couple things though at the moment I can’t remember what they are. In the near future I’ll do an updated video of my food storage. I have all condiments, flours, nuts, meats and fish, canned goods, home canned goods, sweeteners, jams and nut butters, vegetables, cereals, pasta, rice and beans, fruits, dry mixes, milks, paper goods, drinks, spices, oils and butters (ghee) etc.
I have home canned foods and dehydrated foods I’ve done myself.
One particular brand I’d like to mention to you is Keystone meats. You can get them at Walmart. I don’t suggest buying online because they sending the cans, or rather they get dinner on the way. They come in two sizes: 14 and 28 oz. all the ingredients are meat and salt, and the salt is not extremely high. I haven’t opened it yet but I’ve heard great reviews about it.
As you can tell by my name, I’m quite into this. So much so that I decided to create a separate channel to hopefully help nomads become more aware.
I hope to be out of my house and have it sold within a few months and hit the road once again. I sure miss it. I’m not worried in the least about the weight I might be pulling by taking some of my food pantry. My type of van is meant to be hauling heavy things and works best that way. I will be having some of my things in glass jars so that mice don’t become interested. It will be interesting to see how much an invite capacity I can do this on the road, since I don’t have an RV.
Also I am happy to see the response from your subscribers in reading the comments. It lets me know that I’m right on target with this channel. I only have to find enough time to make the videos.

Wonderful video and information...you are SO organized, and the shoe closet as storage is great. Having lived 12+ years aboard my sail boat, ie small space and cupboards in motions, all of your points are well taken. I might add these tips: almost all boxes/grains contain vermin eggs...moths, weevils, worms. I always took cereals etc. out of the box before bringing onto the boat, put them in my baggies or plastic containers and chucked the boxes. With your beans, rice, flour etc (except that which you will be using immediately), get your container, place a small piece of DRY ICE on the bottom, pour in your grains/flour, set the lid askew for 12+ hours (overnight is good) and then seal. The gas from the dry ice will kill all varmets, and product will last a thousand years if not unsealed! Writing the name of contents on your canned goods is a great idea...long term, labels can come off. How many times (until I learned to do this) did I open a "mystery can" for dinner! EGGS, will keep a really long time without refrigeration if you 1.get eggs that have NOT been in fridges at store,
    2. gently rotate them every 2-3 days to keep the inside membrane from drying out 2. will keep even longer if you put a thin coat of vaseline on them. The point here is to keep air out of their porous shells and keep the membrane from drying out.

Putting paper towels in baggies is hugely helpful. I've gotten microgreens to last literally two or three weeks. But you need to check them for moisture a couple times a week at least, and replace them with dry ones if they get damp. Also, squeeze all the air out when sealing, because that's where much of the moisture comes from. Also it means less oxygen, which means less oxidation(rotting, going stale). Lastly, when you take a bag or other container out, get what you need as quickly as possible, then seal the container tight again and put it back in the fridge immediately. Don't leave your container out on the counter while you figure out your meal plan or whatever -- plan in advance and then put away fast, so moisture does not have time to start to precipitate out. Warm air holds more moisture, so you want as little contact with warm air as possible ... or you are going to get wilted or rotting veggies much faster.

Tip: If you really like dried fruit, try dehydrating your own? Maybe you could do that in a solar oven, adjusting the oven for appropriate drying temperature? Tips: When writing on your cans, also write the month/year you bought them so you can concentrate on eating the oldest stuff first. Tip: After shopping at Walmart, I take all my boxed stuff out of the boxes (like you) but leave the boxes with Walmart in THEIR garbage can, after flattening them all. Tip: You KNOW keeping foods in sealed containers is a big key to keeping out vermin and keeping food fresher for longer. Buy the BIG CUBE kitty litter containers sold in Walmart. Use the kitty litter, then use the container (after washing) to store food (such as noodles, ramen, rice, snacks like protein bars, etc. They stack well, and the lid comes installed on the container and has a flap lid. (Paint it to match your decor if you don't like the yellow color!) TIP: If you have room for a 5-10 cu ft fridge in your rig (shuttle bus, skoolie, RV etc) BUY a deep freezer (3 or 5 cu ft) and buy baskets that fit in the deep freezer to arrange your foods. A deep freezer uses about 1/4-1/2 the power as a front-opening fridge and offers enough space to store a TON of food. Just know immediately after shopping, it will suck a lot of power to get the food all frozen. Have even more room? Get a second unit and use a thermostat power switch installed in the freezer to turn it into a fridge, setting the internal temps to fridge temps. If you can't afford one of those super efficient $1600 12-volt fridges, this is a super alternative to have high capacity and low power consumption food storage. Additionally, a chest style fridge/freezer gives you counter space as you can install a foam block with wood top on top of the lid and make a butcher block surface, further insulating your fridge/freezer. (A deep freezer is a MUST for me, since I can't live without my cubed ice and ice cream.).

Great tips! I’ve been dehydrating my own foods recently. I try to do it when I’m already using the oven for other things then throw in my stuff to dehydrate as the oven cools. It’s great for things like kale, corn and other veggies that aren’t too watery. Good alternative to frozen stuff!

Little tip from sailing. Sailors never store their canned goods with the labels on them. Always just bare cans labeled like you do. 2 reasons one is bugs like roaches lay their eggs in the paper of the labels. Second is boats get water in them regardless how hard you try to keep it out and they don't want mold growing. Peel off the labels before you store them. Your less likely to have water but the first is a good enough reason.

Hi, my best food preservation device is my Aldi dehydrator! I dehydrate everything, it all becomes small and light, awesome for long term and small storage. Best bit is that the food tastes delicious!!! And you only need a tiny bit. As mobile people, when food is in season you get a lot of it, so preserving and storage is a mandatory skill, especially in these uncertain days. I was recently in QLD Australia and strawberries came into season, they were so cheap and good, omg!! I bought all I could afford and spent days cutting them and drying (and eating) them. Now I have jars and jars of them, they taste like lollys (candy for the Americans and sweets for the Brits), so good. Laura x

I have an Excalibur dehydrator and used it this summer at my family’s home where there was so much FREE fruits and vegetables available (they were compensated for the use of the electricity). Have most vegetables, fruits, dehydrated cooked rice and pastas (they just require hot water to hydrate), puréed cooked beans, dehydrated them and just add hot water, oil and salt to them I cook for about 5 minutes for refried beans. I have canned my own beef, chicken and pork also but in half pint jars so no leftovers to refrigerate. You have lots of great ideas and like you mentioned about your potatoes they love dark places.

You have a great setup and system, the only concern I have is there are no easy to read dates, it only takes a moment to write month and year under the content description, and it makes it easier to see what you need to plan meals around a year or so later when your food is a mixture of 3 different year expires. We are eating beans from 4-6 years ago for dinner tonight, and the reason is the expiration date, rotation of your stock is key later. We also live in a camper, I found the slide-under the bed bins can hold a massive amount of canned goods under the bed, no sliding around, and the small plastic drawer bins can hold spices, paper packets, foil tuna packs in an easily accessible and space saving way. We took the small closet and put in a wire bin tower, perfect for holding bags of dehydrator fruit, chips and condiments. We plan on taking it out and installing a sliding pantry for canned meat, as we build up the stock (we just got a pressure canner, jars and a outside propane setup). When we do big renovation next time, we are raising the floor in the bedroom, and will put in a space to have interlatched bins on rollers in it, with access from the front. We are short on height, so the lost height won't be a big deal. We have enough for 2 ppl for 6 months, and seeds, storage gear to garden and put up the same amount next year even if it isn't available to buy in the store. Just in case😏😉

The best thing we ever did was buy a FoodSaver! We are eating meat that is as fresh today as it was last year when we froze it! It also has attachments for dry goods & containers in addition to the bags.
We went on a month long tenting trip across N. America & before leaving we dehydrated meal ingredients including bread packages for baking bread on the road. We only had a CX-5, no rooftop storage nor a trailer but were able to eat quite well just picking up fresh items. We did have an electric cooler which was great & we would pay for electricity sites!

Fantastic idea for anyone with an RV even if you don't live in one full time. In areas, like the south or parts of California, disasters seem to be occurring more and more often. One may need to flee to another area immediately leaving no time for shopping or putting in long term provisions. Imagine if everyone in an area is leaving all at once, as during a hurricane, high water event or giant fire and everyone is looking for gasoline, food, water and supplies all at the same time.

Would you call that hoarding or planning ahead to feed your family?
This Pandemic will get worse and everyone will likely be asked to stay home for weeks, we are expected to have supplies to do that.

Saves going to the store so often for perishables. You could easily buy or make a DIY bidet from a dishwashing liquid bottle. Just leave a little soap in the bottom of the bottle and fill with warm water just before use, saves trees, as well as buying so much TP. And, also saves money while being healthier.

Now that times are tough the non-preppers are running to the stores trying to get food, but it’s too late because the businesses shut down and the manufacturing has shut down. If the workers are not working it is not the fault of a prepper.

We all have food in abundance. I suppose it is the hoarders that concern me. The panic buying is what causes the problem. There are many manufacturers in this country. So if spikes occur one place, go to another. But if we have hoarders, that's when people die... Not only due to covid can people die. When there is no food due to panic buying, people will die, even all the ones taking good care in the world and trying to follow protocol. Not everyone eats MREs. Leave food on the shelves for people who need it.

Great ideas, as always! Food prices are going up and up weekly and for many of us on Soc. Sec., it's getting so that we might have to go to eating dog food, as many Seniors back in the 70's or 80's did, tho' who can afford that anymore? At any rate, I think it's wise to stock up for that reason as well as for any crises which may come along down the pike! However, I would like to tell any who don't already know that most vegetables can be regrown just by putting the roots in water. For example, if you cut off the bottom inch or so of green onions and put that in water, you will have an endless supply of gr. onions. After 5 or 6 days, you can then plant them in soil like any other plant. The same goes for celery, beets, carrots, and all sorts of other veggies. And yes, I keep them in my house, tho' they can be planted outside in the summertime. The other way, you can grow them year round. Anyone wanting a great site to see it for themselves, go to Mary's Nest here on you tube, and no, I don't even know her. She just explains it all and demonstrates it for you as well as anyone you can find! Thanks Robin! I think those with RVs would be wise to stock up no matter how small of a rig they have. Canned goods can always be stored in bins under a bed or sofa, or anywhere else they fit, even under front seats! If things get wild here in the new year, stores may be shut down again and then what? Now is the time to heed good advice even if it means getting a box for the roof, homemade or otherwise!
