@1:48:50 - BoP sucks. I understand the rationale behind it but it sucks nonetheless. Take years of experience, enormous investment of engineering talent and funding to make a fine-tuned speed machine, put it on the track and then throw a sack of rocks and detune the engine to make it even with the shittiest car there. No wonder manufacturers lose interest. If all we want for 'good competition' is to even everything out between car brands and models, why not give everyone the same car? After all, the uniqueness and possible advantages of each car is being erased so only driver's skills matter.
GT3 is a customer formula though: while there are works drivers in the main GT World Challenge the vast majority of cars are sold to customer teams that run them and if you didn't have BOP some of those people would buy cars that would turn out to be lemons and they either run as backmarkers until they can afford an upgrade or just not run at all. It would also increase costs since manufacturers would spend a fortune on cramming every little bit of performance out of their cars and that would initially crowd out customer teams and then smaller or less competitive manufacturers who cannot compete and leave you with a very small field of cars - look at GT1 in the late 90s for an example of what happens when GT racing goes to its full excesses. BOP isn't perfect by any means but if you want a GT racing series that actually lasts for a long period of time then you need it or something silly since its inherent existence means that manufacturers won't be spending a fortune to get little bits of performance. Besides what evidence is there for manufacturers losing interest in GT3? It'll probably happen at some point since that is the cycle of these things (look at GTE now, or GT1 ten years ago; or the original GT1 twenty years ago) but it certainly isn't the case at the moment and while COVID has impacted on things a lot field sizes still appear to be strong and new cars are being developed.
@@HighlandCall I would like to see manufacturers from Ferrari to Ford come back. But customer cars also suffer from BoP injustices. They work hard making their cars the best they can and out comes an official and dumps a sack of potatoes on their floor. I don't know the exact formula but I would start by limiting the amount of fuel each car is allowed in a race. Everyone gets the same amount. You make sure your car goes as fast as possible while being efficient. That gives both owners and manufacturers something they can strive to be the best at instead of getting their work undone by racing organizations.
