If I remember correctly they do explain why the magic skipped Fox... it actually didn't. But Titania believes that Magic needs to be cultivated or it will root until it disappears, and she believed that that's what happened to Fox, whatever she might have inherited was gone.
I do believe you are correct as in an episode or two, Fox does show rudimentary powers when someone tries to take Alexander. It isn't much and I don't think it stops more than one or two people, but because she never did anything to help it grow, it never got past its primal, rudimentary stage.
In response to the mentioning of the SLG comic written by Weisman, he is currently writing a new Gargoyle comic for Dynamite that is a direct continuation of that comic. In addition, Dynamite has announced that they will be re-releasing the other comic for people to enjoy and catch up on the story Weisman has written since season 2. Dynamite is also launching a new Darkwing Duck comic, so even more Disney Afternoon goodness!
And if they continue the plotline of Lex's sexuality reveal, I look forward to all the rightwingnuts accusing Gargoyles of going 'woke'. Oh what happy day that will be.
Gargoyles is one of my all time favorite cartoons growing up, it’s complex characters and story elements is what made this cartoon an absolute masterpiece in my opinion.
When Atlantis The Lost Empire came out, Eisner approved a TV series called Team Atlantis, which would have featured a Gargoyles CROSSOVER ... but the movie bombed and the episodes that were made were compiled into Atlantis 2 Milo's Return.
This is why I tell Amphibia Fans King Andrias has been denied every thing , even his revenge. Some one make that mash up and link me. wish more shows today got 52 episodes
I remember catching glimpses of this show as a kid and am very thankful that I was finally able to binge this series on RUclips back in high school. I am kind of surprised he didn’t mention Cold Stone. I get that he/they wasn’t in the series too much and there were a ton of other characters he didn’t bring up either, but I always found him/them to be the most interesting side character(s).
I remember absolutely loving this show when it came out. Still have a soft spot for it (or at least my memories of it) but did not keep up with anything. Hence the reason, most likely, that I was surprised to hear Elisa was not latina. As a kid, I thought she was (perhaps conflating her with Renee Montoya from BTAS). I was also surprised to hear that the Avalon storyline was so beloved. The introduction of Angela jumped the shark for me, and adding the "Incredible Hulk"/"Quantum Leap"-esque episodic stories where the heroes were wandering from land to land helping others put right what once went wrong caused me to wander off.
Gargoyles is no doubt one of the awesome action cartoons, and one action cartoon Disney has ever made. Of all the Disney Afternoon cartoons, this one is one my absolute favorites. One worthy of fan fiction with either a continuation or with other characters, especially doing one story where Demona gets a redemption arc, which I will tell in full detail another time. Speaking of stories, did you that they tried do a crossover with characters from Atlantis: The Lost Empire? I'm not making this up, they were plans to do a crossover story with both Gargoyles and Atlantis, but didn't come to fruition. Other than that, perhaps one day, in any shape or form, Gargoyles will, indeed, live again. Keep it up, dude. Can't wait for more Honest Reviews. 10 Points on the Bad Ass-a-Tude Meter, indeed. 😁
I mean, Greg Wiseman has said many times he has planned out the entire Gargoyles story. A binder with like a decade of story ideas and has always said that if given a chance to revisit Gargoyles he would because he wants to tell more stories in that world.
Three pieces of trivia the first new Olympians actually predates gargoyles as a concept originally created by Bob Kline second the idea that Hudsons blind friend knew that Hudson is a gargoyle and the line about him, smelling like old leather and concrete was added to the comics Gregg added it, because not only is it a fan favorite, but it’s a nod to all the hard work that the crew of Goliath Chronicles did and lastly Greg has gone on record, especially in the DVD commentary for he regrets making the hunters mask have the same lines as Gillecomgain scars stating it makes no sense for no one to suspect that he was the hunter he later rectify that in the comics where he has Constantine the king from the first part of the Avalon three Parter has warpaint based on Gillecomgain scars to make him seem like a less obvious suspect
Love the extra info 👍. It is almost never mentioned that some of the old crew members of Gargoyles stayed for season 3 of the animated timeline. 😲 I didn't even know that till this vid. I enjoyed all these seasons and 2 comic timelines and hope there are more in the future in order for these characters to survive like all the DC,Marvel and other popular characters that have survived for decades . 😊👍
Always loved this show, but oddly it wasn't only video itself but your rather on point choice for background music...are you hinting at something E-Rod?
Honestly season 3 wasn't a finale season still better that TMNT BTTS season let's all be real here also maybe you can do a Honest Reveiw on the 2003 TMNT series because I do think that this series deserve more love as well.🐻
Love the story around Lexington's reveal as gay. Supposedly the writers and show runner figured out this trait while developing his character, but avoided telling the actor since the last thing they wanted was a Will & Grace-style depiction of the character. It was the 90's, that was literally the best they could hope for even if they were allowed to let it happen. They told fans years later while on a panel at a Gargoyles convention. Funny enough, when they did, the actor (who was at the same panel) stood up and shouted "I knew it!" Makes Lexington one of the rare gay characters of the time not to fall into stereotypes. Truly ahead of his time, in more ways than just the narrative
@@PhoenixGamerxx9613 Gargoyles was the first thing I rewatched when I signed up for Disney+ on launch day. And except for a few minor hiccups (like a reference to 3 1/4" floppy disks in the pilot movie), it totally holds up.
Wow! I had forgotten all about The BB channel (owning mostly to a certain channel that won't be mentioned) I was kinda amazed when it popped up in my Suggestions! I forgot how much effort and Heart Erod puts into his vids. Great to have found it and subbed again. Talking about one of my fav 90's toons. Even mentioned my #1 90's toon too! No, it wasn't the one with turtles or ducks.
I now understand, sort of, why people dislike season 3 like I never did before, but it's my favorite season! I love these episodes the most because if focuses on individual characters the most! Loved the video as always, thanks for your take over all this!
Because it's when the show kinda went off the rails. I mean there was even an episode where Goliath was put on trial. Also because outside of the first episode the creator of the show has nothing to do with it and was pushed out.
My brother and I were inspired by what you said about Season 3 and are checking it, currently watching the Hudson episode and enjoying it. Always appreciate your input
Eyyy I love seeing you revisit this- your initial review of it years ago is what got me into the show initially (I hadn’t even been born yet when it premiered, lol) and this just reminded me I need to do a rewatch Wonderful video! 😊
I never knew some older crew members stayed with the 3rd season of the animated timeline till this vid 😲, thank you for this info. I appreciate the cast and crew that continued the 3rd season of the animated timeline cause it honestly helped me deal in real life✌💜. Still love all 3 seasons to this day. I love season 3 for feeling more grounded which I related to the most being Hispanic and going through some tough times myself. I liked and respected Xanatos in S3 who felt more realistic in this in that in life people normally grow as a people/he grew as a father, husband and protector relating with the Gargoyles more in which his castle ultimately became his family. I've also come to learn that in fiction there is no true canon unless its real life lol. The ending of The Goliath Chronicles didn't end with a nice lil how though as you said they were "slowly" beings accepted in society just like history shows that minorities are still slowly being accepted with there always being a lot that still don't sadly.
Xanatos: I'm going to buy a Scottish castle that's said to release the gargoyles trapped in stone when it rises over the clouds. If it works, I've got a cool army of gargoyles and a badass castle on my building. If it doesn't, I've got a badass castle on top of my building. Either way...I win. I ought to make a writing trope based off that little gambit. Name it after me.
Xanatos was the coolest bad guy. You know you are awesome when you put a scottish castle on top of your skyscraper just based off a legend, even Lex Luthor doesn't go that far.
While Disney had good animated shows after the Disney Afternoon like Phineas & Ferb, Fillmore, Gravity Falls, Owl House and Star vs the Forces of Evil; Gargoyles is one the best shows they ever had.
I hope you manage to check out the SLG (when they re-release them) and Dynamite Comics when they come out. The former have some really interesting ideas and characters to introduce, even if the art quality isn't always consistent.
IIRC for 'the Gathering' Titania say why they want Alexander and not her daughter. Fox either never developed or nurtured her gift so she's a lost case by then but the baby still has potential.
I was graduating from high school/going to college when this series was on, so I didn't really get a chance to watch much of it; however, I remember catching bits and pieces and thought it was an incredible series. If this is actually on Disney+, I'm definitely going to go back and binge watch it :) I agree with you, ERod, in that it should be brought back, but on the condition that the new series more closely matches the look and feel of Season 2 over the look and feel of Season 3. Hell, I'd be happy if they did a "Season 2.5" and really establish the underlying story arc of Season 3, then have "Season 4" have a totally new story arc.
Question. Since the only main cast members of Star Trek the next generation to not appear in this series were Gates McFadden aka dr. Crusher and Patrick Stewart aka Captain Picard. Who would you guys have them play has they been cast for this show.
Um, from what I remember when Titania asked the gargoyles to help her steal her grandson from Fox & Xanatos they refused especially Goliath he was very against it so much so at the end he told Oberon that if Puck were to train Alex about his powers & heritage he wouldn't be taken from his parents. And the lord of Avalon agreed to it but Puck/Owen would never be able to return to Avalon again. Brooklyn has always been my favorite of the gargoyles.
I personally see the divide between season 3 of the show and the comics as two diverging timelines, branching off in different directions from the season two finale. I've watched season 3 and read the comics(Erod was right, they were hard to pin/track down), and I like both though with the comic's timeline coming back into play with new issues(in 2023) I'm gonna gonna have to side with the comic's timeline just a little more.
Yes , I've seen lots of fans recognizing that with popular fiction characters there are plenty of timelines and Gargoyles has 3 and I bet will have plenty more in the future .💜👍
I remember when there was a yearly convention for Gargoyles. I was all set to go finally and went to buy tickets and... the previous year had been the last year. That made me very, very sad as I had been wanting to go since the '90s before I got old enough to actually go.
Fun fact! According to the dvd commentary in the awakening 5 parter they were supposed to show Lexington finding a catapult interesting but sadly they had to cut it for time. Also Hudson was apparently based off Ed Asner’s character from the Mary Tyler Moore show, and they honestly didn’t think they’d get Ed in the auditions.
Wiseman says that if the six issue that will be releasing does well he could do more and I do hope so because I would like to see more stories or the gargos answering question that were left unresolved in both the show and the 2006 comics like more Illuminati more plots with DNA and Demona and Macbeth an other history stuff
Technically the first episode of season 3 is still canon. I still don't consider the rest to be though, not as a disrespect to the workers, but as regret for the stories we could have gotten. If you get a chance to read the comics, they are much better. My least favorite of season 3 was the clones episode because it felt like they just wanted that plot point wrapped up. In keeping with the ominous way of Future Tense's dream/prophecy a few more things happen in the comics to reference that.
Late, but thanks for this. Not enough Gargoyles videos on RUclips and this show would be lost to time if the fanbase weren't still alive. I'm still trying to find the article/reddit post that described Brooklyn as the "pretty boy" of the group. Hilarious. It's also going to drive me insane because it's such a weird way to describe the one with the beak. (Crushing on him now, but I wouldn't admit it to friends.) He's also my favorite character at this point, followed by Lexington and the rest. Angela might be my least favorite because she struck me as a Mary Sue quite a bit. She needed more...personality or something, but I say that of all characters that strike me as bland or one note. (Goliath may be the exception, but he's more likeable for a stoic guy. Love that he's well read and stuff.) Fun video! Edit: I might not find Angela as boring as I let on. Her action figure is neat and she isn't a bad character. Just needed more to her I guess. Character traits=good.
Gargoyles was my introduction to mythology and the best story telling, I get excited every time I hear the intro. Can stop myself following Keith David's narration.
Apparently, Disney+ has streamed Goliath Chronicles (maybe still is, I dunno), but instead of the remixed opening theme, they just play the Season 2 opener instead. Which I find a little weird. They're already playing a more maligned season of the show, why not the theme? I also noticed they fixed an error that always bugged me. In the first episode, MacBeth appears on a talk show and is referred to as "Lennox MacBeth", which was in accurate. But in the streamed version, they rightly refer to his proper public alias, "Lennox McDuff." I guess they went back and used a proper take or something.
I’m happy they made new comics and are making a live action show. My sister loves Gargoyles. Now she doesn’t have to keep watching it over and over again. (She’s watched it at least three times)
Let it be known that when Demona turned humans into stone in that one episode, she went around smashing statues left and right. THAT was heavy stuff there. Like damn. 0_0
Here's an idea: Re-air the series, but with Jonathan Frakes giving intros like he's still hosting Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction. "Did you ever decide to buy a Scottish castle, just to see if it would magically turn some stone gargoyles into flesh-and-blood beings?"
while i agree that season three is fairly weak, i do have a soft spot for it. i do wish i could get my hands on the orginal comics but they are impossible to find. i was hopething the new series of comic would reprint those old series but i dosnt look like thats the case
Actually that's what the plan is. The current run is to be treated as Weisman's season 4, with reprints of SLGs run planned so people can see his Season 3 (complete with a moment from the TV season 3 in tribute to all the hard work that was done on it).
I've had a weird crossover fan fic in my head for about a year where this show meets a marvel universe. Also has small tie ins with the pirates movies and a Disney XD show I discovered after signing up to Disney+ called Mech-X4.
I have a theory that Demona that is actually half (or least part) vampire, what with the fangs and red eyes. Hell, listen to that flute music in her first appearance.
I love gargoyles so much heck I even saw that the last scene in the comic where the main villain demona Is looking for a mcguffin Statue and inside that statue is a crystal not just any but an Atlantian crystal that is a course from the canceled Team Atlantis TV series.
Actually I have the VHS of the Gargoyles 5 episode pilot! In your season 3 video one of the episode should have been ranked top best you should have been episode 1 which was the Catalyst for the entire final season because that is considered even by Greg Weisman be Cannon plus it gives us one last hurrah for Vinny
I'm glad to see Gargoyles getting a review from you. It is my all-time favorite show, and I've been following it since it aired on TV. I do want to clear up one thing. You said those of us who don't consider season 3 as cannon are being disrespectful because we hated season 3. It has nothing to do with hate, at least not for me. For several years, I considered season 3 cannon, but when I found out that the creator of the show, Greg Weisman, doesn't consider it cannon, I changed my mind to reflect his feelings, since he is the creator of the show. Honestly, I think it's disrespectful to brush off his work on the comics when they continue his vision for the franchise the way he's always seen it. It's fine if you do or don't like season 3, but don't think of us who are following Greg Weisman's stories as disrespectful and that we need to get off our high horse when some of us just want to follow the series the way the series creator has envisioned it.
Greg has stated himself that season 3 is not cannon. Other than the first episode that he wrote, he completely disregarded it when he wrote the comics which are canon

My argument FOR Xanatos Ex Machina: never bet against Xanatos, ever. The rest of the series is a thesis statement on that sentiment lol.
Hey man absolutely love your show but I was just wondering when you are going to do an honest review of the expanse????
Technically the first episode of season 3 is still canon. I still don't consider the rest to be though, not as a disrespect to the workers, but as regret for the stories we could have gotten. If you get a chance to read the comics, they are much better. My least favorite of season 3 was the clones episode because it felt like they just wanted that plot point wrapped up. In keeping with the ominous way of Future Tense's dream/prophecy a few more things happen in the comics to reference that.
I need to rewatch thi show. I have the first two seasons on dvd.
This was one of the best informative Gargoyles cartoon/& behind the scenes video I seen yet🥃😎👌🏿You're a Great Presenter💯
Gargoyles was my introduction to mythology and the best story telling, I get excited every time I hear the intro. Can stop myself following Keith David's narration.
Stone by day, warriros by night.
But in the streamed version, they rightly refer to his proper public alias, "Lennox McDuff."
I guess they went back and used a proper take or something.
I love your honest review Erod, please make more of them :)
There were appatently 4 comic series by 4 different publishers. I have no idea if they have a shared continuity.
SLG and the newer Dynamite series do, since they are all written by Greg Weisman.
*I Live Again Intensifies*
"...and impregnate women..." 🤣🤣🤣
I crushed on BOTH Goliath and Elisa Maza. Elisa was my 2nd female crush after Talia Winters from Babylon 5.
Having gotten into Star Trek- TNG, I am enamored by the people whose voices are behind these characters. Keith David is my favorite Voice Actor.
The BEST show Disney has EVER made
Agreed.
@@sebastiancalle8892 thanks
I’m happy they made new comics and are making a live action show. My sister loves Gargoyles. Now she doesn’t have to keep watching it over and over again. (She’s watched it at least three times)
The fact that the show didn't treat kids as moron little people is the best thing about it
Exactly
Let it be known that when Demona turned humans into stone in that one episode, she went around smashing statues left and right. THAT was heavy stuff there. Like damn. 0_0
Love this series! One of the very best of all time!
You wanna know what’s weird! Three Items from Gargoyles appeared in the Young Justice cartoon on HBO as An Easter Egg!
3:09 Our beloved Goliath, oh man that'a why manhattan clan is awesone!
Ok. I can really see how teen titans go and gravity falls inspired by gargoyles!
Hell, listen to that flute music in her first appearance.
best cartoon ever, how there is not a new version is beyond me
Great summary, but please put spoiler in the title, during the writer strike, people might want to visit past Disney content.
Loved this video! This is how I'm going to introduce new fans to the series.
My favorite Gargpyles are Goliath, Hudson, Brooklyn and Demona when she transforms during the day into a human billionaire named Dominique Destine.
I love gargoyles so much heck I even saw that the last scene in the comic where the main villain demona Is looking for a mcguffin Statue and inside that statue is a crystal not just any but an Atlantian crystal that is a course from the canceled Team Atlantis TV series.
Sutch a good show, really needs more comics
I'm sorry but I have to disagree there was one bad episode, which is the episode that deeply involves the clones.
SWEET!!!
Loved the show.
Same
I kinda want to go through the series again
Beautiful review video thank you so much for doing this
Greg has stated himself that season 3 is not cannon. Other than the first episode that he wrote, he completely disregarded it when he wrote the comics which are canon
YOU'RE TELLING ME THAT GARGOYLES PULLED A HITCHHIKER'S FLOWER POT???
I've always loved the "Theory" that Bronx is just a....... um..... Cognitively Challenged Gargoyle. It REALLY changes the show.
YASSSSSS I CAN'T WAIT!!!
I think I burned out the VHS of the movie/pilot episodes.
Has anyone else read the Gargoyles Saga virtual season?
