Will the End of Economic Growth Come by Design - or Disaster? | Gaya Herrington | TED

- What if solving poverty, caring for nature and fostering well-being were the ultimate goals of the economy, instead of growth for its own sake? Environmentalist and economist Gaya Herrington proposes a shift in thinking from "never enough" to "enough for each," asking us to contemplate whether the end of exponential growth on a finite planet will come by design - or disaster. (Recorded at TEDCountdown@BloombergGreenFestival on July 12, 2024)

The people in position to make changes are the ones who do not want change.
As long as money fuels them. They will do everything they can to keep us from moving forward.
Yes, this is why we must, slowly BUT surely, choose the vid title's question to be the former, to slowly BUT surely change the system(s) we live in, to ones where such sociopaths*, as the people you refer to, aren't given the reins and driven to keep hold of them, by any and all incentives in our entire context of existence (those systems).
* whether these sociopaths are "born" that way or (anti-) nurtured to become such, BY the systems we live in, is ultimately irrelevant, the larger systems are in fact giving them everything they need to thrive, and giving the rest of us, the vast majority of humanity, none such provisions
(also occasionally the pace can and will and should be swift instead of slow, but most often, and in the overall average, it WILL be slow, and those times it is swift, AND sustainable, will more often be when it's mainly the visions of potentials that are made predominant, rather than some sudden switch to actual implementing of that vision, becoming possible, and viable, overnight -- this at least seems to be what all evidence, history, experience and existence all show to be true, in fact, so far, and part of the shift to actual "enough"-ness is stopping the hero fantasy dream from dominating, in its hyper-individualistic, and stuff-growth-info-as-be-all-end-all driven nonsensical loops of failure)
@@avirichar4981 aptly considered, there will be limits that stop growth suddenly if change does not. The problem is and always has been like the expectations of Moores law in computer science that ever excessive quantities can be pulled before there is little left to extract in forms of gains. There is currently a cohesion of very niche interested parties that are willing to take from every other component part and the interests are so inter mingled that what is taken in one field also conditionally adds profit to another field but at some point what has been the pool of parties that are the creative element for those interested parties to extract from will no longer exist or will be devoid of those potentials that you noted.
This does not need to be so if humanity can produce a market foundation for all parties to become interested in the progress of the whole. I use progress in ambiguity but distinct from growth because whilst growth would stifle innovation for concensus control progress does not. The is nothing that profit alone can create and humanity holds keys to the doors of what can be created. But what is under appreciated at this time is humanities role in a possible future where robots are seemingly supposed to provide for the niche parties every desire but desire at the cost of everything else is short lived and as billions and soon to be trillions are poured into the machine learning fields humanity will still have the potential to provide the data that cannot be bought if that digital data was never produced.
We have an opportunity as a species to create a nexus of possibilities, the niche group will have to concede because the gains they wish for cannot be realised without human assistance and collaborative guidance to produce.
The creation of the Federal Reserve is what caused our eventual Doom.
Yes! Been saying for ages that we need to teach contentment in schools. Unbridled ambition and aspiration for endless growth is not the recipe for happiness OR fulfilment. We must shake off the old system and look ahead to a future that works better for more of us.
Ironically, the root of the word economy means to save, or spend wisely, quite the opposite of our "economy" today.
The root of the word economy is oeconomia, which is ancient greek for home stewardship.
@@Rnankn and failed stewards we are. Who'd set their own home on fire?
Evidence that those we label as "Conservatives" are usually the least economic political option.
@@DutchDansing indeed
What she's saying in this video is something a lot of people already know. The problem is that humanity's leaders are too busy caring about themselves. Politics and greed sit at the top of the human chain.
Well people have to understand the need, and want the necessary changes. Until then, electoral cycles require politicians to be responsive to voters, and markets require corporations to compete for growing revenue.
I like the positivity here. We could use a bit more optimism for the future.
The problem of an economic model based on speculation that rewards capital and not work
Rewarding work assumes production is the limiting variable, while rewarding capital assumes it is wealth. But the limiting variable is nature, inclusive of energy, materials and biodiversity. In the aggregate, there is no shortage of capital or labour, but there is an excess of externalized harm. So working less should actually be rewarded. Or stated differently, our productive capacity suggests those satisfied with sufficiency should be rewarded.
The problem is simply human greed.
The answer to all why we are not able to solve these issues is because we lack the willingness to change through necessary inconveniences that have to be overcome to make the world better
Haven't watched a TED talk for 3 years or so.. I knew this would be worth it. Thank you for the hope and direction you've given me
I wont just be contributing, I'll be spreading your message and experimenting with the most effective ways to do it, starting with making a big thing out of the word 'enough', emphasizing it at every greedy business I challenge on the ethics of their practices. The power of words and their interpretations is never to be underestimated. Please anyone who reads this, do the same. We don't need to maintain being seen as normal, we just need to be heard and make people think. Embarrassment be damned. Speak up no matter how accepted a bad behaviour/'policy' is.
ENOUGH! I love this idea and it should be our goal as a species.
Sadly and according to my own statistics and intuition it will come in the form of disaster.....
How come 'exponential growth on a finite planet is a contradicton (and a self destructive practice)' be such a revelation to anyone ?? ... and yet, these kind of talks are more and more important/necessary.
Well done. We have been in an organized crisis i.e. growth and consumption religion.
This is wonderful. Sutainable and carefully thought-out degrowth would be wonderful. And efficiency gains resulting in working less would be the very best.
Prosperity of creation is the opposite of scarcity of resources. Create a bunch of stuff and give it to people. You can.
Greed. Powerful are greedy, and powerful make the rules. And this happened behind closed doors from the general public. We all need to decide that greedy people cannot be in charge anymore or ever again. Leaders need to be chosen based upon their ability to resist greed.
I'm with ya, but man this is a tricky thing to actually do. We'll need fairness to be very well thought out and enforced everywhere
reminds me of the ideas of Daniel Quinn. We're (humanity) either going to learn to live sustainably on this planet, or we won't (& we'll disappear)
We really do have the vision in hand. I hope enough people can bend to the change we need.

Right there with you. 25+ years of writing global change science summaries, networking with everyone from green anarchists to x-military intel to "ecopreneurs" and so on... no one has a complete plan but there are emerging solutions everywhere - they just don't get the attention in media. So many people are still selling visions of a new world or techno-utopia - just use a little of the existing technologies we already have to directly address local emergencies and environmental issues, experiment with open source collaboration, share results both positive and negative. and get ready for a few more years of silliness...
It‘s about everybody’s everyday’s little choices. Not all at a time but step by step. The question: do I need a coffee right know or can I wait until the office. There I could drink from a real mug instead of a paper garbage can? Maybe you could just start making this choice once a week, knowing that you are not alone and this will course an impact. @@Rnankn the opposite is sustainability for all as the focus instead of just destroying everyone with exhaustion for whatever goal
We started travelling in a one-way path & it's just not easy to apply brakes or change the direction!
The issues with these ideas is that we need to determine what should be the goal life of people. I don't think that will be feasible before the disaster.
Until we wont remove the profit parameter/mechanism, nothing will really change.
You can have "growth" in an economy without actual wage growth for the majority. The USA has had this.
Why? The answer has been there all along. 'It does not belong to man who is walking, to direct our step'.
You gotta solve problem from start where it started , by asking transparency from your bookkeeper (politician) and keep there status as employee!
The primary goal of our economy is not growth but profit, they do correlate though. Reduce the profits for the use of fossil energy to zero (tax 100%) and it will diminish. The big problem are our political leaders and systems, which are not able/competent/willing to make changes for the better.
Economist Gaya Herrington proposes shifting from growth-focused economics to a well-being economy that prioritizes human needs and ecological sustainability. She argues this transformation is feasible, desirable, and necessary to avoid societal breakdown predicted by the "Limits to Growth" model.

The thing is people often doubt the prospects of financial advisors like Julianne Iwersen Niemann in business/markets today.
Well it gives me more time to get ahead while they stew in their own pity and doubts as they childishly complain about those spreading the word
I absolutely hope humanity can do this , but I can't say I am very hopeful
I can't say I'm hopeful in terms of whether humanity WILL do this, at least not yet, til proven, how in fact the thing I am 100% hopeful about, that humanity CAN do this, is also met with the actions required to ensure that IN-humanity is no longer enabled and allowed to STOP humanity from (our fully capable in-born nature as living things and social mammals and wise sentiences to be in fact 100% endowed to be able to be) doing this

Any sane person should naturally come to the same conclusion. That is the beauty of science and logic. The difference now that it is eating into profit margins is that it is (slowly) becoming mainstream.
End of economic growth by design is a crucial part of Industry 5.0.
I'm afraid that as long as money means power it will be hard to convince those that have a lot and want more to give up this thought for the benefit of all. The very honorable thought of having enough vs more very much stands in contrast to the ignorance, lack of imagination and greed in place. So my bet, although I don't like it and I would love for it to turn out differently, is disaster. There's nothing else those with power have ever learned from and changed habits, even if the disaster was, like this one, foreseeable. Or, as George Bernard Shaw put it: 'Must another Christ die in every generation to save those who have no imagination?'
The concept growth has a limit which is maturity or even death. What we need is sustenance and maintenance economy.
can some one just make tools that will last. I want a set of tools that I will buy once. don't really care if it costs 5 times as much.
As the eco-economist Jason Hickel put it: Less is more.⚛️❤
Someone tell me why economic advancement is illegal when on social security. Then tie together how communities that go through hard times try to pull things together end up limiting an entire region and then creates economic disparity elsewhere leading to the demise of a society. Seems like grand design of a country with a king rather than freedom from the elements.
Neither need nor greed is going to be met.
I am amazed at the naivety of people about the world.
Excellent, marvelous TED talk , not news, of course.
The real problem is All our economic systems run on growth, GDP and population growth year over a year, And all our economies run on tomorrow’s money we borrow today based on tomorrow’s growth we can’t borrow more money if we don’t make more money and if we make less money, our credit ratings will be affected, and it will cost more to borrow money. Our economic systems are inherently flawed and incapable of living sustainably. There is no alchemy that will allow us to continue growing while consuming less, not less energy, not less products and not less of our lives. We have to rethink the entire thing we have to downsize our desires and expectations for after all, it’s the meek that shall inherit the Earth, and those meek will either be new, humble, humans, or Back we go to prokaryotes to hopefully start all over again(And even that is not guaranteed). I believe it started with go forth and prosper taking over and destroying the do no harm that pre-dated it, GDP is only the latest manifestation of this exploitative POV
as our civilization advances, it seems to require more energy; IMO it was a BIG mistake for everyone to hysterically fight against nuclear power, which could have been a good transient replacement for fossil fuels, until fusion power truly becomes feasible
Government should be modeled based on this. .
Capitalism dies or we do, neither can survive while the other lives.
Since greed is a common vice of the human condition I don’t think economic growth will ever cease. I hope we don’t completely destroy our planet for money but I think the psychos in control of mega corporations don’t care either way… I’m optimistic regardless
This is so sadly accurate. Stay hopeful, but also stay prepared. I appreciate your comment!
I don't think greed is an integral part of being human. I think it stems from trauma which has only been worsened by created scarcity.
@@rainbowconnected I edited it to ‘common vice’. I was too lazy to change it earlier. I agree we don’t all succumb to greed, but there are a select few among us who always will inherently. I think it would be the greatest feat of mankind if we successfully cease growth and live in our current abundance
*GAYA* the talk is excellent, but needs boosting with the morality of sharing replacing the profit motive. That's the way nature works.

This doesn't land very well. Loads of scholars have been writing about this for years, and she seems to have discovered it in the last 5 years. Tim Jackson comes to mind but there are so many. Many who didn't work for KPMG lol. Also which companies are making "billions after legally putting people and planet first?"
*The Internationale starts playing*

The core problem lies in the values and beliefs that this generation has adopted or have been influenced to do so through various socializing agency such as corporates , media and once this quest of more is ingrained within us all these talks seems like bullshit. I try my best to educate , inform people around me as much as i could but deep inside sadly i know how this all is going to end but still i won't leave without the fight even if i know the end.
The greatest tyrannies are always perpetuated in the name of the noblest causes. Individuality is based on the recognition of inalienable rights, including the right to one’s own life, liberty, and property. These rights are derived from the nature of man as a rational being. Individuality is rooted in self-interest. It is the pursuit of one’s own happiness and fulfillment. Self-interest is not selfish or destructive, but rather the driving force behind human achievement and progress. Individuality is closely tied to rationality. History has proven that humans are capable of independent thought and decision-making and that this rational faculty is the source of human creativity, innovation, and progress. I abhor dystopian collectivist ideologies, such as socialism, communism, and altruism, as they threaten individuality and promote the sacrifice of individual rights and interests to the collective. I advocate for a system of laissez-faire capitalism, which respects individual rights and allows for the free exercise of individual initiative and creativity. The needs of one will not satisfy the abilities of others.
Excellently put...well said! And exactly why the thoughts of this speaker are so dangerous...while sounding harmless!

Sadly the human condition won't allow this common sense to actualize. There's always hope, but realistically, our self serving desires won't retreat until its too late and the suffering has consumed us.
Will the End of Economic Growth Come by Design -
no, they must make all of it automated and robotized, making humans depend on a rich landlord and the government for substenance. people will be poorer in the future.

I have some reservations regarding your approach. I believe that relying on force or legislation may not be the most effective way to guide this change. If it is meant to occur naturally, as you suggested, then I think we should allow it to unfold in its own time. Even if the outcome doesn't align with your controlled plan, it may lead to an acceptance of the process that we can all live with.

I'm all for a future of abundance and well-being, but I felt the message was quite underwhelming.
She doesn't provide any arguments for why more economic growth will lead to catastrophe.
I feel like such a bold statement should have strong reasons laid out.
Isn't economic growth the underlying variable behind all progress, and why things eventually work out?
Growth can only be considered progress when the harms it causes are externalized and ignored. After ignoring accumulated consequences for so long (pollution, inequality, depletion etc) they are threatening further growth and progress, ultimately rendering them impossible. The costs will overwhelm the benefits. The catastrophe comes from pursuing growth (so doing yet more harm), without organizing an alternative.
Underwhelming argument! Why does she need to provide that when the evidence is all around us.
In italian we would say "grazie al cazzo"

Why are TED talk always the most obvious cliche points 5 years after the debates has been running for years and without any answers or solutions.

Here is the problem:
I come from a wealthy & cultured family; & what I can clearly see is that wealthy & cultured leadership class are not providing any genuine examples of spiritual wellbeing to people with less resources; & so... gross material consumption remains the easiest/clearest path to improved wellbeing.
In closing, like a poor man will cut down every forest to feed his family, a spiritually/psychologically/ect poor person will do the same.
Lastly, I feel like this is the greatest failure of the American-left. They did not define any formula for liberation; but rather left people confused & empty.
Very astute, thank you for your thoughts
Human greed has no limits. Therefore, economic growth will always be the top priority for most people. They don't care about the consequences of their actions, they only care about making a profit.

Balance is impossible. The United States ostensibly uses accrual accounting in a zero sum game. Someone wins someone loses. It may sound unfair, but that is economics.
I understand the meaning and objectives here, but it is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of what is meant by growth, typically measured via GDP. GDP is an attempt to measure generated value, and value happens to be assigned, even if imperfectly, to what we believe improves our well-being. Are there improvements to be made to how we map value into our effective well-being and sustainability? Absolutely. But it doesn't entail the adoption of a wholesale alternative to desiring growth. IMHO.
That’s overly optimistic. Needs will never be met for everyone as there will never be “enough”. Unless a matter replicator is invented, I don’t see how humans can “live” with another mindset as this is the world we’ve evolved to live in. It will take a truly world-shattering change to change how we live. It’s either some techonological marvel or a world-ending event. Not “hey let’s try this” mindset unfortunately.
