  • Of the dozens of sugar factories that have ever operated in the Yogyakarta area, the Madukismo Sugar Factory is the only sugar factory that is still actively operating at this time. There are many unique and dancing stories behind the existence of this factory. So far, people mostly see Madukismo from the loading and unloading activities of sugar cane and its lorry transportation activities.
That morning I had the opportunity to take a closer look at the Madukismo Sugar Factory which bears the full names of the Madukismo Sugar Factory and Spiritus Factory, both in terms of production and history. Together with the Alon Mlampah Community and Roemah Toea, we were welcomed by the sugar factory under PT Madubaru. The participants seemed enthusiastic to follow the course of the event. Starting from an explanation of the activities and production in the factory, until finally starting to get ready to explore the factory. What's special, we will not walk, but ride a lorry or a modified sugarcane cart! The series is pulled by this unique locomotive, a modified diesel locomotive shaped like a steam locomotive! Let's get started!
From the front of the gathering place, we slowly walked into the factory area. Seen on the left, a row of rows of cane or sugarcane transport lorries full of cargo, while on the right we can see a factory building complex, with piles of bagasse, which is then connected to the disposal of hot ash from the chimney filter. On the left side continues with a row of locomotives because we have approached the remise area aka the locomotive garage. Right near the remise entrance, the group descended and was guided to look inside. It looks like a row of locomotives that are resting. After the remise, we are ready to enter the factory area. Starting from the unloading area, conveyors, then processing, and arrived at a large area within the factory. Next, sugar products began to appear, then continued to the next factory area, namely the packaging area. After seeing the sugar production process, the participants were taken to an open area in the factory complex. But before that, we look for historical markers in the factory complex. Yes, here it is, the signpost marking the construction of the factory. Next, we will listen to an explanation of the history of the sugar factory which will be delivered by mas Aga Yurista from the Roemah Toea Community.
Madukismo Sugar Factory is not actually a sugar factory left by the Dutch, but continues the sugar factory that has existed before. The history of the Madukismo Sugar Factory begins with the Padokan Sugar Factory, which was founded by George Wijnshenck in 1864.
The construction of the railway line in 1895 by the Nederlandsch Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij or NISM on the Yogyakarta-Ngabean-Palbapang line was also a blessing for PG Padokan. This sugar factory can send its products to the port through the nearest station, namely Winongo station. The sugar industry is also growing.
In 1901, PG Padokan changed ownership to Cultuur Maatschappij Der Vorstenlanden or CMV with an office in Semarang. The factory was also briefly modernized in 1910 by the Rombouts Construction Bureau. However, the sweet glory of the sugar industry, which resulted in the emergence of many sugar factories, made the supply of sugar reach its limit. As a result, the price of sugar fell. The solution to that then is production restrictions.
The global economic crisis at the end of 1929 worsened the situation and resulted in many sugar mills collapsing. In Yogyakarta alone, of the 19 sugar factories, only six are still operating, including Padokan.
Politics and world order changed when in the early 1940s Japan began to expand into Asia and finally arrived in the archipelago. Japan, which replaced the Dutch, then used PG Padokan as a cement factory.
When Japan then lost the war, Indonesia, which had just been established, was in a state of uncertainty after the armed conflict with the Netherlands in the period 1945-1949 which resulted in the destruction of many buildings, including the Padokan PG. In January 1950 CMV came to Yogyakarta to check its remaining assets. It turned out that their loss was very large, around 4 million Guilders. Even from some of the PGs owned, PG Barongan ran out. CMV then tried to recover the losses by planting tobacco on the land it owned. Uncertain political conditions and the process of nationalizing assets by the Indonesian government finally made CMV give up. Of the many PGs that later died, it seems that PG Padokan is still getting a new breath. On September 30, 1954, the government held a meeting to discuss the construction of a new sugar factory in the former area of PG Padokan. The construction began by bringing in machines and experts from East Germany which cost around 170 million Rupiah at that time. On May 29, 1958 the new Sugar Factory was inaugurated and bears a new name: PG Madukismo.
