For a lot of modellers VMS may not be an overly familiar product line however for those of us who have heard of them you will know there is a buzz growing around the brand.
Just like a lot of armour modellers, I first saw the VMS product showcased on RUclips being spruiked by everyone's favourite Uncle, Martin Kovac. I loved the results he was getting and the positive way in which he was speaking about the product.
I've loved the VMS products I had used but today I've been given a product that is new to me and is part of the their 'Pigment Jockey' range.
Join me today as I review the product and show you some step by step techniques I used to get the most out of the paint. Its a review as well as a mini tutorial to help you understand the product and how it can be used to present realistic dusting, mud, streaking and general weathering effects.

Not only is VMS a fantastic product, Chris (owner) is an amazing person who offers fantastic service and happily answers any questions. I've moved over to VMS products almost exclusively now. This is a great tutorial/review! Always appreciate your vids

All of these techniques are teachable and accessible to anyone. Just manage your expectations when you first start trying them and know that it takes time and practice to gain some control over them.

Great content. I suspect VMS is awesome product line, but some know how required. I really need to have all the necessary products on hand before starting. I live on an island and getting any product deliveries is never less than 2.5 weeks (Newfoundland Canada). I have been purchasing products in an attempt to have required inventory, but I am still struggling to have big picture understanding. Your content is so well presented, organized and inspiring. Please more content on VMS if you are able. High level overview would be awesome to start. Outstanding content!
Glad you found it helpful Dan. Thanks for your kind words. I’m planning on doing more product specific reviews in the coming year and that should include VMS stuff as well as others.
If I can give you one piece of advice it would be to just start something. Your inventory doesn’t have to be perfect. Trying to do too much all at once is a sure fire way to disappointment. Even if all you can do is a basic paint job then focus on perfecting that.

Thank you 🙏 Like I said in the vid, these techniques can be used with many different products/brands…all basically enamel paints with pigments. I just like the VMS philosophy and their products seem to be of a very high quality.

@@workbenchhobbies4316 There was a wood stain advert here in the UK years ago and the tag line was 'it does exactly what it says on the tin', ie. it stained wood..... it turned out to be one of the best wood stains on the market.....it seems that VMS have a similar philosophy and product range 👍

Great review and tutorial Clayton! I will definitely try these products, as they look easy to use, and very effective. I have tried a myriad of products with varying success, but these pigments look like they may help me improve my weathering experience.

It was me, I was screaming about the out of order on 1 thru 5. Sorry. But I have been using there products for some time now. They are great. There CA glue is fantastic. The CA for resin really holds the part in place. Better be sure of your placement. The binder works very well for huge volumes of mud and dirt. Great video, even if you don't know your numbers.😉
😆 hey Mike. Take comfort in the fact you won’t be alone. Trust me, I nearly died when I saw it during editing…but it was too late to change.

@workbenchhobbies4316 No problem. Actually, I would have never said anything until you pointed it out. These things happen, and cutting a finger nearly off or gluing your fingers to your project are bigger things to worry about. 😆

Been doing the exact same thing with enamels, white spirits and brushes for years. Good to know people actually pay you to mix paints, I might look into that.

I drive an armoured vehicle for many years while in the army. Your splatter is towards the rear of the vehicle. Wet splatter always went towards the front of the vehicle as this is the direction of the track as it passes over the return roller wheels. It also went directly up the rear in line with the tracks. Hope this helps.

Hi 👋 Well…the paints won’t do it for you, but all skills are repeatable. Just follow how I did it and you should be able to replicate it.
I can’t comment on uk delivery, but I would imagine they would?

Absolutely love their varnishes, will get some of this as looks great. Are you using it on a matt or satin finish? Great tips as always!!!
This demo is actually on neither…it’s the model I used for the black basing video…but in reality I’d recommend doing these stages over a satin varnish. Matte finishes can tend to grab the pigments and enamels which make them harder to manipulate.

@@workbenchhobbies4316 Thanks just always wary with enamel thinners against unprotected paint. I like the bottle top use :) Be interesting to try airbrush these on lower hulls for example assume they are super thin. I ordered a set so look forward to playing around with them. cheers S
Hey Scott. At the end of the day a varnish is just a layer of paint…no different to the base layers except it has no pigment content which tends to make it a little more robust.
You foundation layers are so important which is why I predominantly use lacquers…hence never a need to varnish to try protect them. But you are right…some acrylics (especially if the model wasn’t primed) can be a little fragile. When weathering over those I’d always varnish and even then be mindful of drying time and not to flood the model with white spirit because it can disrupt the integrity of the paint.

@@workbenchhobbies4316 I use their Flex 5K CA glues but i love their Hull Tex cement & texture.
Sorry for the delay, missed this one - their super glue is great, I haven't rried the Hull Tex as yet.

What is your experience with VMS matt varnish? I find it dries with a white dusty coating, especially if applied too thick. So, I mix in a little gloss varnish and it helps reduce the "dust."
Also, do you have difficulty spraying the VMS varnishes? I find it very difficult and need to add their SLOW-MO extender and Vallejo Flow Improver to get any results.

Oh really? I have found their varnish to be the best and easiest I’ve ever used! The matte is very matte…so I’m wondering if it is just giving you an impression of chaulky? They are my go to varnishes. Only issue I have with them is I find them difficult to clean out of my airbrush
@@workbenchhobbies4316 Interesting. The chaulkiness often comes from just a little too much matte varnish. A wettish coat can be too much on rubber black tires, for example. They dry frosted entirely or in spots. The semi-gloss varnish can be put on wet with great results. My mix of matte and a few drops of gloss varnish have solved the problem for the most part.
I've gone with their airbrush cleaner (concentrate). It works well if the varnish hasn't fully dried in the airbrush. The strength can be "adjusted" as needed with the concentration of the working solution. Many thanks again.
If I was you I’d be reaching out to vms. You may have a faulty batch. Their matte is usually faultless

Can you use the universal weathering carrier as a binder for dry pigments?
Great question. The answer is ‘kind of’. The universal carrier is really just a fancy name for white spirit. It will help the pigment settle on the model but it only creates a very weak bond…so you’d still be able to manipulate it after the carrier had evaporated.
It works to the point of getting the pigment to look how you want it to, but I’d then recommend sealing in place with a fixer or varnish. In saying that…if you were not planning on handling the model you could get away with not sealing it.

Not sure…🤷🏻 I know people use lighter fluid to thin enamels…never tried it myself. It’s obviously all a form of white spirit. End of the day it doesn’t matter if it works, and it works 💪
