  • April 5, 1968. It is the day after one of the most catastrophic moments in the history of the civil rights movement. Backstage at the Boston Garden, the mood is somber, appropriately funereal. Just 24 hours ago, Martin Luther King, Jr., the most important and beloved African American leader in America, has been assassinated, and though James Brown is booked that night for a show, nobody really wants to go onstage and play.
On April 4, 1968, the leader of the nonviolent resistance movement, Martin Luther King, was assassinated in Memphis.
On April 5, 1968, James Brown sang, and the city of Boston didn’t burn down.
This film tells the story of the pivotal role that James Brown-and that particular James Brown concert-played in the political, social and cultural history of the country, focusing on 1968, a defining year for America.
Using actual performance footage and the personal recollections of James Brown’s band members, friends like activist Reverend Al Sharpton, personal manager Charles Bobbitt, Princeton University Professor Dr. Cornel West, Boston citizens, those who attended the concert, politicians (such as former Boston Mayor Kevin White) and Newsweek’s David Gates, The Night James Brown Saved Boston tells the compelling story of an artist at the absolute peak of his powers using his artistry for the greater good.

I'm 67, white, and barely remember all this. Right now I'm livivd and I'm crying. Seems like everything that was gained back then through so much sacrifice of so many good folks has all been sabotaged by the government. All the assassinations of so many great leaders, AIDS and crack pushed through every city in America, a welfare system purposely designed to separate fathers from their families, and on and on and on. Seems like the south lost the battle, but they are still fighting the war, behind the scenes. I always knew James Brown was a great entertainer, songwriter, and musician. Now I know he was a great man also.

I'm moved by your comments and I'm a BLACK MAN and I'm also 67 years old!!! I lived through those evil times!!!! When I was 7 years old and in South Carolina at my grandmother's sister's funeral and I read a sign saying I couldn't go in a bathroom because I was a BLACK CHILD! Imagine a 7 year old being looked at as an animal and not a human being!!!!! I attended Foote School in 4th grade and was the only Black Kid there along with a young girl that was in kindergarten!!! WHAT AN EXPERIENCE THAT WAS!!!!!! I WAS TREATED AS A NEW PET THAT WAS JUST BOUGHT AT A PET STORE!!! Sometimes I still feel the pain of being studied to see if I was human!! HATE WAS IN MY HEART BUT I'M OVER IT NOW!!! BUT I WILL NEVER FORGET HOW I WAS TREATED!!! EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON!!!!

@@williamparker5520 I remember back in 1969 at our families first family reunion in Arkansas. My dad wanted to take us kids to town to get ice cream and was told the stores did not allow us inside. There were signs posted saying "WHITES ONLY". My cousin who was older told my dad that we could not go in. Well my dad walked us into the ice cream shop and told us to order what we wanted. We was served and the sheriff, townspeople invited my dad into the back where they were shooting pool. We stayed there for about an hour and we could hear all the people in the back laughing at my dad's stories of life in Hollywood. It was always like that for my brother and I growing up. No matter where we traveled across the south my dad was fortunate to never have had to deal with racism. My dad would get stopped by police, sheriffs, and highway patrols, but the outcome was always pleasant and the officers were always nice to my dad and would always wish us a safe trip to our destination. Watching this documentary about James Brown makes me think about my dad and the way he was with people. My dad was over a 100 when he passed he was a brown skinned man about James Brown complexion.

I was raised in a predominantly African American neighborhood and people today don't believe me when I tell them I never experienced Racism. Not until my dad got a new opportunity in a predominantly White neighborhood.
I hated that place, it was just full of hate that was ingrained so deeply..I will never forget the look of hatred on the faces of these White people when someone of a different race moved in, or even just took a walk through the neighborhood. I understood why my dad had to take the job, he had 4 kids to raise, we NEEDED that extra money!
But I always hated and resented that I was taken from a community that truly cared and looked out for one another! It was akin, to me at least, like being abducted and brought into something like the Twilight Zone.

Old retired white guy. I have this on dvd . Very interesting piece of history . James Brown was a great talent. They said the streets of Boston were deserted during the broadcast. Well , here's how I figure it . All the black folks were home watching because they wanted to see the show . All the white folks were home watching because they wanted to see what was going to happen. First JFK , then MLK with Bobby still to come . What a tragic time in our history.

This man is not led by ego as much as the individual who attributed that to him. He simply saw an injurious situation and the 'smart' in him took over. I doubt he was patting himself on his back even in thought. He's a true black man. A true hero.
