My rule is 3, I never buy less than 3 balls of the same yarn. It looks great I love having all mine on display in a kallax but those wardrobes are so smart x
Yeah, I learned that. Was buying just 1 ball of what I thought was pretty, learned the hard way that having tonnes of single balls of discontinued wool is really not fun.
When you roll your yarn in a ball by hand you tend to roll it tight and over time it goes flat but with a winder it is not so tight that it flattens it and it don't roll around an come undone.
I got one yarn winder. Just 4 maximum 100 gr thicker yarn. At least roundabout ~200gr//400+ m length (fastest winded). Those huge 1 winders are optimal. I mention to buy this bigger1. Cakes are better to store//depot. 2 fix them I use a Rubber Band. Including any nice paper, to note the information of the particular yarn. Even the rest of them. Those transparent boxes are especially made just for yarn stash. I guess. 😂😂😂 Even Kallax. 😂😂 Thx 4 your Video. I'm glad to see I'm not alone with "Yarn Yarn..... wherever I look around....Yarn" 😲😂😂😂 🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🍀🍀🍀
Someone recently "gifted" me 3 bags of yarn after decluttering. It is thicker yarn that I wouldn't typically use so I feel like it's just my burden to get rid of now. Too often people, especially Americans, blindly encourage this mentality of MORE MORE MORE is always better etc. What you said about yarns that don't inspire--yep exactly. If your thing is having a room of yarn floor to ceiling, great, do you, but I want to love every skein I am using space to store and much like you said, I don't want to feel obliged to create with yarn I'm not stoked about.
Stefanie W. I’ve recently given away half my stash to a friend who always has knitting needles in her hands, can make anything without even a pattern. She has a friend who knits for charity, so I know the eight big bin bags will go to people who will be glad of them. (I still have at least 10 80ltr tubs busting at the seams, but I’ve stashed them into a cupboard that my landlord euphemistically calls “Bedroom 2” it’s 13 feet long, 4and a half feet wide.) I have sent only brand new, unbroken band yarns, and several of each, where I could, it’s a nice stash in itself, actually, and I know for sure that it will be loved by the recipients. I really have worked hard to make it a gift and not just a dumping ground for yarn I don’t like. Like you, I once received a box full of rolled up scraps, mostly sock or 4 ply, which I’d never use, the arthritis in my hands makes it difficult to manage even DK these days; it went straight to a friend’s “knit & natter” group, who jumped it like a lion jumps an antelope, bless them! I went into our town centre with a friend, at night, looking for genuinely homeless people, (long story,) we found a group of men huddled around an honest to God drilled oil drum fire. We stood a few feet away & asked if we might join them, just because we’re outside, no reason not to observe the niceties, I thought. We were welcomed, seats found for us, and given a cup of tea! It was all quite as formal as a tea party at the vicarage, at first. I was glad of the hospitality, because it allowed us to repay their courtesies by proffering the knitting circle’s offerings. They had done us proud, many many hats, scarves and socks. The guys all chose just one item each, though we offered more. One of the men asked if we minded them sharing with other homeless folk. I was so touched by their honorable & generous sharing of goodies. One of the gents borrowed my phone & within a couple of minutes people started to arrive. Each took only one item, & thanked us solemnly, before disappearing once more. As we left, the guy who seemed to be spokesman for the group invited us to call in anytime, if we fancied a cuppa. I cried all the way home, I was so impressed that, in spite of their circumstances, their dignity & generosity of spirit was unimpaired. I’ve been back with more stuff & am greeted as if an old friend. It was a lovely experience.
Oh my gosh yes I feel like you’ve gotten exactly what it was I was trying to say 💕 thank you! I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a huge yarn stash if you get pleasure from having it all! But there’s no point holding on to stuff we are never going to use it enjoy is there? Better to let it go and beloved by someone else!!! 💕💕💕
Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful story!! That’s so inspiring 💕 and I think you are so right about other people finding joy in what we don’t need. I would much rather that than it just sit in my wardrobe!!! X
@@chrissiewindsor "stashed them into a cupboard that my landlord euphemistically calls “Bedroom 2”" So relatable. My landlord insists on calling my 2 bed apartment 3 bed. The only physical way for it to be 3 bed would be if you only had 3 bedrooms and a tiny, TINY kitchen with exactly zero living space. I should add that there is no room for a dining table in said kitchen and one of the "bedrooms" is missing plug sockets. Ah, I hate being rented.
Just watched your video whilst ironing school uniforms for tomorrow and my husband said 'what on earth are you watching!?' I love him to bits but he cannot for the life in him understand my love of yarn and crafty bits. Sometimes I get my yarn out just to look at it and squish it! 🤣 Your comment about the candle kit made me giggle as I have a soap making kit, a bath bomb kit and a needle felt fairy kit under the bed that I've had since before my 7 year old was born 😳
Hahaha that’s brilliant 😂😂 I’m sure my husband would be exactly the same, but pleased that I kept you company doing the ironing!! Honestly you saying that about your kits makes me panic that I’ve made the wrong decision in getting rid of my candle kit 🤣🤣🤣 on the plus side, at least you daughter is old enough to enjoy doing the crafts with you now! 😆😘🙌🏻
@@lottieandalbert yes you are right, my 7 year old is my daughter (I also have a 4 year old son). She does love a craft kit so I'm sure we can make some progress with those over the next 7 years or so!! 🤣 I've dabbled in everything from card making and jewellery making to crochet and felt decorations. I'm certainly not short of craft supplies when it's Easter bonnet competition time! 😉
Ok you have inspired me to go through my stash and discard. I have odds and sods of all sorts waiting for a project and I've come to realise that project isn't coming along if the wool has been there for at least 4 years! It's time to get ruthless.
Once you reorganize and get rid of "stuff" it feels so good!! I did that to my yarn and now I'm doing it to my plants. Watering takes so long and there's gnats!! 😬
OMG so good!!! You are right! I’m not ready to part with any of my house plants yet 😂 but I did go through this in lockdown with gardening ... planted so many seeds with the kids and then suddenly had 50 extra things to look after 😳😳😳 it was way too much 🙈🙈😂😂💕
I think you can be a minimalist crafter. If you only buy what you need for your current project. Saying that though, there are SO many gorgeous yarns that you can't help wanting to buy them all! I have a lino printing kit I bought 4 years ago, that's still unopened! Love the shirt you start off wearing in this video, where's it from?
Thank you so much!! The shirt at the start is from Reserved I bought it recently 💕 I think my new word is ‘intention’ 🥰 I’m not against buying or holding on to things if I really have a purpose or intent for them, and know I will be able to enjoy them! So I totally agree 😆 thanks so much for watching 💕
Don't stress it. You just need more time to use the yarn/fabric. Concentrate on using what you have without buying more supplies. If there is stuff you really don't want then give it to a thrft/charity store. All best wishes 😊
I also have a candle making kit in the bottom of my wardrobe, it must be about 7/8 years old too! 🙈 Enjoyed watching this, I've felt the need to clear my craft stuff out for a while and you've inspired me to get on with it! 😊
Victoria Bee Designs I bought everything I needed to make a sugar scrub. Never touched it. My brother is staying with me & I find he cramps my style. If my scrub making is an epic fail I don’t want any witnesses.
It's not a crazy amount at all. I find it so hard to purge, I guess that's why I have an entire room for my craft supplies(and space to work on it). I do try to keep on top of it though, I don't buy just to be buying anymore (or because it's pretty). It has to be for a current project of a gift make and I don't let it expand beyond the designated space allotted for it. My goal has always been a place for everything, and everything in it's place...now whether I ever achieve that is another story. hahaha
Yes absolutely I think that’s what I have been figuring out for myself. I’m not stopping buying but I just want everything to be much more... intentional! And to have a place to make tidying easier 🙈🙈 thanks for watching lovely 💕
Found it hard getting rid of my yarn x but I did gave it to schools xx and to hospitals ect I’ve done it now but still go into yarn shops when I was 14 my gran and next door they said I was to go to jumble sales to get jumpers to wash and unpick I still have my 1st grany square x but love yarn 🧶 when I go into a yarn shop it’s like a sweetie shop it makes it hard to say no I don’t need anymore yarn xx
My theory is minimalism stunts creativity in a crafting life. Hide & it will never be used. The front of my organised stuffed 'collections' have the most beautiful things arranged as a display. Even the front a plastic box can be made visually more pleasing. As this is your profession it shouldn't be perceived as a problem. Stick the office in a shed and fill up the other room is my advice - Is there a book out there about embracing stash after the 2020 lockdownJen x
I do know what you mean Jenifer. I’d like it to be more organised but I think it also needs to be accessible- and sometimes just squishing that yarn inspires me!! So certainly don’t want it all shut away too much! When I was little my mum had lots of craft stuff too and I used to love sorting through it and getting ideas of things to make 😍 I haven’t yet found any minimalism books or podcasts that deal with craft stuff - maybe this is why!! 💕thanks for watching
Agreed, I need my materials to be accessible or I won't be able to find anything. Not everyone is a lover of wool on shelves and thats ok, but for me since I did that and stopped stowing things away in boxes everything became so much easier. I can see what I have, so I use more of it more often. Actually, its helped me a lot to buy less and use more of what I have
You have done a good job with the cupboard but what I don’t understand is why your getting rid of stuff when you’ve just become a full time crafter? If it were me I would have made things with the materials etc to sell then not buy similar again. I guess that from now you’ll have to be much more intentional when your purchasing goods. On the other side of things I did expect you to have so much more stuff (possibly a room full) given the industry you’ve come from. Comparable to a couple of crafters I have known, myself included, I was surprised at how little you had, it simply needed a bit more organising. I think that once you have achieved the new discipline, with the ongoing practice of minimalism as a full time crafter there may be an opportunity for another book. Now I think we need an online chat and you can give me advise on what to do with mine cause I need help!😊 Thanks for the video. From Australia 🐨🐨🦘🦘
Haha thanks so much Lesley!! I think my main issue is time, and even now this is my job I’m not making and selling finished things, only patterns, so I’ve just come to the conclusion that I’m not ever going to get round to using a lot of if!! BUT if you have the space for it and love it then I don’t think you need to get rid of any just for the sake of getting rid at all! You enjoy that yarn!!! 💕💕💕

Get a yarn winder. They stack nicely and feed from the center.
