Shout out to you, I’m learning from your videos. I’m from the south and I luv 80s and 90s memphis rap. I’m Learning how to create that gritty sound! Super dope channel!
Man, THANK YOU very much for this tutorial. I found this machine and an R-5 on my local marketplace for 10 bucks each, some months ago, not knowing you can make dope Phonk (and DnB) beats. (Midi # notes is to assign a pad to a specific note on your keyboard, so if you assign # 60 to a pad, when you press C4 on your keyboard will sound that pad... MIDI is confusing but very useful) Love your channel
mannn where tf you livin to find dr660 for 10 bucks? i live in southern wisconsin and mine just broke, i can barely find a drum machine under $200 at all let alone a 660
Tommy Wright III used one of these his whole career. Pretty much laid the groundwork for Trap with this drum machine. So if you want to hear what this thing is capable of just type in Tommy Wright III.
@@ricoyoutube6512 i live in australia and grew up with some kids in melbourne that used the dr-660 and 4 tracks and shitty samplers and made tapes because somehow a few og memphis rap tapes snuck their way into australia (this was before internet) Nowadays theyre all into drill🤦♂
some basic ass sampler, if ur talking djs in specific probably one of those super primitive dj samplers like what shawty pimp and lil grimm used to use, but these are pretty rare. like for example: a gemini ds-1224 or ds-8, 24 second super lofi sampling time but you have to trigger the sample live while recording as for later productions maybe something like a boss sp-202/303
@@TheToiletZone666 fuck it i like it all i just need more vids on the specific 90s Memphis drum machines ect and you seem to be one of the most knowledgeable on RUclips
Yo my guy! I’ve been looking for the “Choir” sample on this thing for a year now. Would you be so kind and maybe upload a sample of that somewhere? Tried 10 different sample packs, but not one of them contains it! Need it to make that evil Memphis sound. Thanks g!
yo about the pad bank thing, i never figured out how to use the banks A and B seperately without doing layer. like you can have A soloed, B soloed, or layer, and they seem to follow the same midi sequence regardless of the pad bank. did you just have some of bank B muted with layer on for room for bank A? or can they actually play seperately?
@@JandJsStudioOfficial ya on my sequencer i can just record however long i want. i could do shorter patterns and form them into a song but i prefer to just make really long patterns lol. about the pad bank thing, i really only use one bank at a time but i've done tracks where i will put a bunch of synth bass notes on bank b and drums on a. as long as u don't have layer selected, u can def write patterns separately with both banks. i think maybe u have 'layer' selected during playback?? bc then it just plays everything on both banks.
also u can only edit a few of the drum kits, i think like 15-36?? maybe if ur using one of the non-editable ones, it keeps resetting and messing up your banks??
@@TheToiletZone666 iread the manual its actually kits 8-38 u can edit, so alot more kits. i cantf ind anything on how to play the banks seperately, both on the same pattern without layering in the manual, although there was a thing about fuckin w velocity curves and being able to pick which sound plays but its really tedious and you have to step sequence everything to the rightvelocity i really hate the step sequencer on the 660 so i didnt go for that
Yo just wondering, I’ve always wanted to get something I can get this kind of sound with and mess around on. Do you think this is a good thing to start with, or is their newer drum machines now that can do the same thing?

This video has helped unlock some wicked tones from my dr660, thanks!
tysm for this man. you even threw some suggestions in the mix of the drum patterns
ofc! i rly like that there's so many ways to write songs on the DR machines, right now i'm learning how powerful it is as a midi sequencer

@@TheToiletZone666 Right, On The Run is the only reason I know this. He says on the song Getting Crunk that he still uses Boss and a 4 Track.

also howd you get the patterns to be so long? is it being controlled by an external midi device or something

yeah i just been getting into the velocity curves, i think just certain sounds cancel each other out if they're set the same?@@JandJsStudioOfficial
