Fighting Cloud as a boss would be cool, actually. FFVII:AC Cloud + DoC + Remake level of experience? AND he defeated Sephiroth as well. Cloud is - besides his natural (mental) weaknesses - one of the strongest characters in FFVII. It's one thing to be a SOLDIER 100%. Try being BROKEN several times over AND STILL getting back up on your feet.
I would've said it's because in the split timeline that because Zack survives it never creates the trauma to make cloud imprint his memories and push him out of his comatose state. With him in that state still with Jenova cells underutilized he could become the perfect vessel for Sephiroth's "Rebirth"

I want to throw it out there that there are now TWO Clouds in that universe. The one we have in REMAKE turns evil while the one with Zack turns out to be the protagonist... Also Zack dies saving Aeirth, but she ends up sacrificing her self at the end of the third game in order to merge with the planet in order to put things back together.
This without A doubt going be insane because even though the devs confirmed nothing will be left out from the Original Disk 2 game due to Remake plus A alternate timeline surviving Zack and A knocked out cloud accidently stumbled into the remake timeline from it looks like when Zack is seen talking to A surviving Biggs after the plate dropped makes you realize that ANYTHING can happen at this point

Cloud from Zack's timeline will become Sephiroth's puppet most likely, but one from our timeline is going to resist, just like in OG. When timelines merge, then we can have a boss Cloud :)
I like this theory. The only part I disagree with is how we get to this point. I think it's more likely that we'll fight Cloud after the Temple of the Ancients, as we try stopping him from giving the black materia to sephiroth. I think Rebirth will 100% diverge from the original, but I don't think it will be to the severity that some think
It was recently confirmed that the "main game" part of the story will be around 40h. So I can see the game ending at the Temple of the Ancients. It would also make sense. Unless the devs changed the location of the temple to be at the north continent...
I'm still hoping that Aerith doesn't die and the end of the third game you going back to ensure her death happens. Playing as Zack through the third part to ensure the timeline would be another added twist as cloud gets stuck in the Zack timeline after something like this (him being the boss) and the last boss fight has everyone including Zack have their own part in defeating Sephiroth. Message being we can't recreate nostalgia. We can only fight to preserve the memory

Yeah, honestly I could see them doing something like this, or even just thematically close to this. In a way *SPOILERS FOR OG FFVII* : (just in case) Tifa's Lifestream intervention for Cloud is in a way a "Cloud boss-battle," where she helps him piece back his mind after he hands over Black Materia at Northern Crater, and falls into the Lifestream. That... ONE TINY scene in Rebirth trailers, where they mention WEAPONs and Tifa is floating in what for all the world looks like the Lifestream... that's AFTER the Forgotten Capital, after Northern Crater! THAT is driving me nuts. I know the developers have said that while nearly nothing will be "left out" that came from OG, things will definitely be expanded, and even happen "out of order" to the OG story. So that knowledge, tied with those irritating little snippets in the trailer, lead me to agree with you that saving Cloud's persona will most likely be tied to the "final boss" of the game. And very likely have something to do with JENOVA as well, since I don't think we fully get rid of her originally until the final descent near the core. Thank you very much for the kind words, once again! Maybe I can shed some light in regards to the "mini Weapon" in the Rebirth trailers. The place that I think that they saw the "mini weapon" the 1st time would either be when Bugenhagen does his lore explanation of the FF7 world to the party. OR they saw that and it also happens at the Gongaga's destroyed Reactor (it looked like the only place that made sense given the environment around) These are probably one of the changes and addictions that the devs made for Rebirth.

It'd have to be something like the Whisper fight at the end, which I fully interpreted as a test for that very thing. I quite agree with you, thanks for explaining. I'm genuinely excited to see what they do. We've gotten to a point now with mods that replaying the original can be a visual (and audible, folk often forget we can rev up the soundtrack easily too) treat, so we've always got that to fall back on. I wouldn't call myself a purist, but it IS easily EASILY my favourite JRPG of all time... I'm intrigued to see where they go with this new series. Take care man, everybody. I always thought Sephiroth was too cool to just go crazy more like he was taken over used as vehicle of red headed bearded man I wonder if it’s genesis and It would be monumental if Zack is playable parallel and in the same capacity as cloud with his own separate party damn maybe some new characters entirely introduced in FF7. Nah I guess that’d be too much still excited tho
