Grab your pop music telescope and check out the landscape: The walls between genres are crumbling. Boundaries once delineated by countries, languages, and cultures are being rendered useless, and artists such as Sen Senra are the troubadours of the new global village. Born five years before the turn of the millennium in a small Galician town, Christian Senra is keen on making music unclassifiable in trad terms. 2019’s ‘Sensaciones’ album, considered his initial breakout, welds Spanish pop, ‘80s synth-pop, acoustic singer-songwriter sensibilities, and experimental electronica into a distinctly modern structure. Themes of sexuality and romance are the connective tissue in Senra’s work, something he proudly announced early on in his career. Even more elements were folded into this year’s ‘Corazón Cromado’ album, including features from Feid and C. Tangana, two Spanish-singing superstars who share Senra’s disinterest in staying in one sonic lane. A writer of his own music, Senra says his unique voice doesn’t need to be perfect as long as it’s singing truths. Though he uses guitar as a base, other instruments arrive to flesh things out if needed. The nocturnal synths and 808s of “Tumbado En El Jardín Viendo Atardecer” belong on the ‘Drive 2’ soundtrack; whereas Sirius’ Coffee House channel would gladly spin his biggest song to date, the acoustic ballad ‘Ya No Te Hago Falto.’ Versatility. Versatility. Versatility. So when it came time for our DSCVR Artists To Watch team to choose its 2022 membership, there was an impulse to look global and go beyond genre. Sen was ready and waiting to reciprocate this kind of acknowledgement. He called it an “honor” to perform “Globo” and “De Ti” in “such a cool space.” No question, the feeling is mutual.
