Overlanding Africa: Botswana | EP 1 | A wet Khama Rhino and Kubu Island Adventure

- Our first Botswana adventure of 2023 has kicked off and we have an incredible trip planned.
We will be visiting the following areas on this adventure:
1. Khama Rhino Sanctuary;
2. Kubu Island;
3. Maun;
4. Moremi - Xakanaka;
5. Moremi - Third Bridge;
6. Khwai - Magotho Campsite;
7. Savuti;
8. Chobe River;
9. Hunter’s Road;
10. Elephant sands.
We will be joined by the team from Opposite Lock and Cgear

In episode 1 we travel from Pretoria to Khama Rhino Sanctuary passing through the stockpoort border post. We travel in heavy rain but are rewarded with a wonderful evening in camp.
The next day we make our way to Kubu Island, Sua Pan through the Makgadikgadi Pans and because it is still so wet this turned out to be a crazy adventure (one we will treasure forever)
Yes we got a little stuck but that’s all part of the journey!!
In the next Episode we try our luck taking the Gweta Road to Maun and prepare for our first time visit in the Moremi Game Reserve. Can’t wait for our first Safari experience of this iconic location.
Botswana is an absolute fantastic country to overland and Gunnland (Our 79 series Landcruiser) is right at home in the wild and untouched parts of Africa!!
The little Jimmy never disappoints, just amazing how little packages gives so much, of all the cars that were stuck, Jimmy refused that indulgement, what an awesome adventure
I do this trip once a year. So glad too see a South African channel also enjoying Botswanna
Bud loving the new series, testing times in the mud but it looks like super fun, i still believe weight it the biggest problem with trucks getting stuck.

We love kubu, been twice. But they should close routes when its this bad it just destroys the roads for the dry seaon, they never relly recover!

Ive done those pans in the wet, in an old Landy with my wife and daughters. Very scary, and a old well seasoned traveller who I once knew, who has now passed away, once told me, if you hear the thwack, thwack, thwack of mud in your wheel arches while on the pans you are in trouble. :)

PS. love the Amarok. I have a serious itch to build a bakkie......hmmmm. :) (dont tell my wife)

As a former Jimny and Cruiser owner, people never believe me when I say the Jimny is better in almost everything barring clearance height.

I tend to agree with you - the Cruiser to me wins on 3 fronts: 1. Storage space 2. Sound 🤤 V8 and 3. A built 79 just looks insane!!
The Jimny for the second trip in a row showed us just how super capable it is!! I love our Jimny so much I find myself grabbing the keys more often than the cruiser
@GunnlandExplores Meant on a 4x4 trail, apologies I wasnt clear! Yes definitely don't miss the lack of space and fuel capacity in my Jimny or the fuel bill on my cruiser 😅 i settled in the middle with an Isuzu. Thanks again for the video

Fantastic video. If I may ask, at 4:30 that map effect you did there, how did you do that or what software did you use? Been looking for years for good mapping software similar to that and spent a lot of money so far with no luck

@@GunnlandExplores 100% that would be awesome. I’m in the filming and editing business but on the hunting safari side of things and find your content quite Lekker to watch. There are a few guys doing what you do but not so nice to watch as yours. Great job, great video quality, great talking, great info, great audio and great editing. Job well done, overall a great video each time

A lot of the main route in the muddy sections were churned up! But otherwise I am going to agree with you 100%!! Even if there is no water just off the track - it is worse than driving in the water 🫡

Couldn’t get exactly 35s so went with 315/70/r17 en die vrou het gebots teen muds haha to het KO3 gegaan!! Dit is die perfekte tyre vir die V8 voel ek!!

I'm from a country quite far (Portugal) and you did one of my dream trips so i'll see every episode, but with this in mind, you speak too much Africans, more English please! :D also...going with a car in the fleet 4x2 in this conditions wasn't a bit crazy?

I didn’t enjoy it, either you see the vehicles in mud or water or selfies, I expected more of the scenery

I disagree with @wernerstruebing116, the episode was about getting stuck in the mud, I saw plenty scenery in the drone shots ... good video ... I like the action!
