@@Cheyne_TetraMFG Unexpectedly. I was at the School which had started the NYT movement, and just starting to shake out three years of serious abuse - there's a reference to it in Lindsay Anderson's first Mick Travis film, If...
Anyway, I was in protective measures under the watchful eye of a former Guards RSM, as I was shaping up into a Tier One personality, and had just joined the Cadet Force. The storemen had made it clear they were going to do exactly nothing to help, so I was tasked with sorting out their shit-heap. This I did, an eight-foot pile of battledress folded by size, and my own swapped for a good size among it. At the bottom of the pile was a huge box of a different pattern, so I reported back, wanting to know what to do about the box of 1917 kit. The Admin guy was on the phone, "No, Dickie, we haven't got any WW1 uniforms - what is it, can't you see I'm on the phone? We do? Well, you speak to Mr Attenborough then..." and so I did. Off went the box, I did my basic drill, then individual orders, be in uniform outside the School gates at 0630 Saturday. So there I was, feeling a bit of a lemon, when a parp-parp came down the road, and a charabanc hove into view, loaded down with the cast, so my first salute was from the cast, two Lords and half a dozen future such, Bilbo, Maggie Smith, so when she sings of her Baby Boy Scout, it's sort of personal. I was more into voice, having been guided by Sir Geraint Evan's lady wife, salvaging the School Choir which would get Flo Welch into voice...and then Stage Managing Queen the Saturday Bohemian Rhapsody hit.

I’ve always loved the “Santa knows every language including sign” cliché. I know it’s even done today but it’s one of those things that can’t not make you smile. Santa is usually such a western thing, and the fact that it’s implemented in so many shows and movies that it doesn’t matter where you’re from always felt magical. That they could always communicate with you, no matter the method. That you were never a problem, or a hurdle, something people who communicate in sign or only different languages often feel. You don’t expect someone to learn a new language for you, so when someone knows it, it’s astounding and magical, especially for a child who never experienced that.

I live in St. Louis, and we have a large school for the Deaf and Blind near some of the bars I did security at. People with hearing impairment were always happy and relieved that my big 6'8 ass knew some basic signs and helped bridge the gap of communication. Having a deaf girl come to you scared because someone is following her and you being able to understand her, and guarantee her safety was like a fucking super power.

[3] Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit. [4] Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; [5] and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; [6] and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. [7] To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. [8] For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, [9] to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, [10] to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. This actually happened at a Breakfast With Santa’ event her went to when my children were young. There was a short play put on and Santa arrived at the end of the play. The children would go up to him and sit on his lap afterwards. A girl came to sit on Santa’s lap and began signing excitedly. Santa simply replied in kind, signing just as quickly as the girl, both smiling broadly. My 4 year old looked on in wonder, then looked at me and said, with awe in her voice, “Mom! It’s just like Miracle on 34th Street! He IS the real Santa!”

The real Saint Nicholas knew Latin and Hungarian... which is its own, unique language. Butchered alot of innocent people for the crime of not attending church... much as Saint Olaf did in Normandy. Also the first recorded male child abuser in the catholic church.
On a brighter note, Christopher Cringle was not a saint, but he brought toys to war orphans to celebrate Jesuses Birthday. He wore brown robes, not red, and a lyrapipe hat.. The man was a toymaker, and would leave a small toy in each kids sticking nailed over the fire. Had a sleigh pulled by a mule.
Redoing Saint Nicholas, who is accredited for bringing catholicism to Hungary(barbarric methods, but then, the Holy See started as an army, from crusades to inquisitions) Was merged with Christopher Cringle, as the man died before he gained recognition for his work.
Noone argues Christopher Cringle would have been the more beloved Saint, but in their time, God was a wrathful deity to be feared and reviled, not the gentle and kind God as he is portrayed now.
(If you want to know more fun real figures in history that take on mythic proportions, look up the Cardinals: Lucifer, Michael and Gabriel... the bible only names one angel, 'morningstar', the rest were all real people.😅

A couple hours later at his gig something exactly like like this happens, a deaf boy just wanted to see Santa. Then one day, in his Christian clowning meet in 1994 they entertained some children. A mother brought her deaf son to see the funny clowns. The mother told my dad the same thing you don't have to talk to him he's deaf he just wanted to see the clowns. So dad started signing to him . The boys face lite up and had a blast talking to dad. Dad had to ask him to slow down for the silly Clown. So this Seen always will have a special meaning to me.

She also can speak a few words, but she can sign more and it is wonderful being able to communicate with her and figure out what she wants without just going down the list until she stops fussing. @baddaytrader thank you so much. I've always struggled with reading and spelling. Spell check is wonderful, but it does not correct an improperly used word that is spelled correctly. Words matter, and editors are helpful. Happy New Year. 🙂👍🏼

Your facial expressions, even when just watching and not communicating, are so beautifully expressive! Thank you for sharing ❤

My daughter is hearing and only knows a few signs, but she was shy with Santa this year and used sun language to talk to him and he was totally fluent. Wonderful experience.

I love the scene, but even more I love watching the beautiful young translator, the joy and expression in her eyes is priceless
