I was stationed at ATG Midpac when the causeway opened. I remember when the only way over to Ford Island was the car ferry or a couple of personnel boats, one of which left from Merry Point landing at Bravo piers. I was there when the Missouri was towed in. Served aboard two ships out of Pearl and did several tours on Ford Island at FTG Pearl/ATG Midpac as a shiprider and instructor in the trainers, and then as a classroom instructor. Last tour I pretty much just did Rooftops and spent a lot of time working on my resume right before I retired. All told, about 18 years of my 20 were spent on Oahu at Pearl. Loved that place. Miss it.
I was Army watercraft stationed of Ford Island in 2000 and lived in the barracks there 3rd floor center north side directly over the gym. Used to run my rc cars up there and taking out the trash was a breeze, just walk out on the roof and drop directly into the dumpster.
thank you for the video.Alot has changed on the island since I was there in 1978 stationed on the island 5th Trans. Co L.T.C.John U.D.Page Army ship Transported troops from Oahu to main island and back every weekend. The bridge was not built then we had to use the ferry. They had an old sea plane in the hanger when I was there. The Navy also had housing for their families.
I haven't seen all of your videos but just wondering if the barracks that used to be close to the old boat landing are still there. When oone of my ship's was in drydocvk we actually lived in the barracks out on Ford Island. Also survived Hurricasne I wa out on the island. There is also an old Sick Bay over there where a 500 lb Japanese bomb slid through the door and across the floor without exploding. When I was there in the 80's they still had the tile that was tore up from the bomb sliding across the floor a different color so you could see where the bomb slid and came to rest. I used to jog the island and cut across the runway from time to time. Going past the tower and the hangars with bullet holes in them and on the runway and other concrete areas. I would go out at night some times. Never saw anything but you definitely felt the presence of the spirits and from time to time would hear things that could not be explained. If I remember correctly it is the USS UTAH that is still visible in the water on the back side of the island by the mid lock area. I usually stayed away from the housing area because it was Zero Land (Officer's Housing). I was also on watch on December 5, 1981 when a plane filled with a skydiving team that was supposed to parachute into Aloha Stadium crashed into the water near the USS ARIZONA MEMORIAL but closer to that little out-cropping of rocks are. All but one person died. If I remember there were 12 total and 1 survivor. Every ship in the harbor sounded general quarters to wake everyone up and launch motor whaleboats and Captain's Gigs. Definitely a very interesting place to have lived. I was stationed in Pearl Harbor for 5 years on 3 different ship's and decommissioned 2 of them. I served aboard USD MORTON DD-948, USD RICHARD S. EDWARDS DD-950 and USD SAMPLLE FF-1048.
