This reminds me of a childhood experience . I was with my mother in down town San Diego accompanying her on a doctors visit. After her appt she wanted to stop in somewhere to have lunch. We really never got out much and I was so shy and afraid of not fitting in. All the restaurants seemed so fancy and out of the realm of our experience.and made me feel self conscious of being Mexican and of humble origin. Well my mom picked a restaurant ,very fancy ,I remember it was filled with plants and ferns. No, Mama, not this one it;s too fancy and expensive. We walked in and noticed a long line ,I was pulling on my moms hand to stop her.I felt we were drawing stares. Then the Matredee made a bee line towards us passing all the other people in line. My mother meekly asked to see a menu, I reemember he looked like Van Johnson. Ill never forget what he said to my mother. Please come in, then he said ,Dear lady, I mean no offense but please allow me the honor of buyin you and your son lunch here with us. I actually thought he was going to say this place isnt for you! His kind and beautiful act of generosity will never be forgotten.
Kim Novak was the biggest star in the world when Kim filmed this cameo. Kim was so beautiful and was magic to the Camera. Kim was extraordinary in Picnic and magnificent in Vertigo. Kim was great in Bell Book and Candle and I loved her in Strangers When we Meet. In her career Kim worked with the greats of Hollywood: William Holden, Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, Rita Hayworth, James Stewart, Judy Holliday, Fred Astaire, Roz Russell, Frank Sinatra, Angela Lansbury, Charles Bronson, Jane Wyman, James Garner, Kim's greatest perf may well have been Middle Of The Night with the great Frederic March. When I was in VietNam I wrote Kim and she sent me an autographed picture the famous head shot from The Legend of Lylah Clare. Kim worked with Billy Wilder and Alfred Hitchcock but i feel her greatest director was Richard Quine whose deep love for Kim shows in their movies. Kim was most beautiful than in this clip from Pepe and The Notorious Landlady with her Columbia mate Jack Lemmon
When I got home last night, the movie "Pepe" was on, and I don't remember when was the last time I saw it, but I'm sure I was a little boy or perhaps a teenager. I've always remember this scene with Kim Novak, and Kim was so popular in the US, and she was always so beautiful! This movie had a ton of stars in it, and I wonder if all the stars realized how popular Cantinlflas was with his incredible talent. My mother would take us as children to movies with Cantinflas, and they were so funny. He was in a class by himself. God bless Kim Novak and RIP Mario Moreno (aka Cantinflas)!
@ToughXArmy69 Thanks for the comment. I agree with you. Such a warm and genuine performance which she maintained in all of her work. She's long overdue for a Lifetime Achievement Award.
Kim Novak was as big a star as there could be and definitely the biggest star at Columbia pictures when she made this cameo in Columbia's all star "Pepe" with others such as Greer Garson, Jack Lemmon, etc. I personally feel Miss Novak was never more beautiful than in this film, this small cameo where she played herself to the amazement of Pepe aka Cantiflas who was the biggest star in Latin America and this film was geared to the Latin audiences by Columbia. Ms Novak was a real movie star
2:02 i love the look she gives Cantinflas when he’s talking about her. I know this is scripted and actors but I love to think about the times people like my uncle or father were treated with this kindness when they came to this great land USA
Too bad due to the barrier of the english language Cantinflas couldn't show all of his real potential... the wordplay obviously isn't the same in english as in spanish
Though he spoke with a heavy accent, he did fine in the two Hollywood productions he appeared in: this film & 1956's "Around the World in 80 Days". I wish he'd appeared in more American movies.
@ToughXArmy69 Kim was gorgeous and so underrated as an actress. I agree she is beautiful here, actually luminous, but I think she was even more beautiful in Strangers When We Meet. (which I wish someone would post on RUclips ) I still have an autographed picture she sent me when i was just a teen and a note on lavender stationary...her "favorite color "
Strangers when we meet was shoot the same year as Pepe,so no wonder she looks so amazing good.I think she was at the peak of her beauty."Strangers","Vertigo" and "Picnic"are the three masterpieces of her career IMHO
I was just thinking old ski nose bob hope should've made a film with this great clown. hell, a,few years before this film he co-starred in paris holiday with france's greatest comic fernandel. if only the producers were prudent enough to realize what a good team-up this might've been.

Exactly!!! He comes across as very inocent in this film, unlike all of his movies in Spanish, no one could beat him.
@@suzymatuz1265 yup you nailed it 👏
He spoke English he was intelligent
for a big mexican star like him, his english isn't bad at all.
Do you have the complete movie? It would be nice of you to share it.
I did not know Cantinflas spoke English.
