I'm a sound desk aficionado, always stand either behind or beside the sound desk if possible. Two reasons; I'm tall so if I go further forward I always, without fail, get complaints that I should be stood further back and I love prog so at a prog gig I go for the sound. Agreed, the Bridgewater Hall is amazing for sound, wherever you are seated. Great podcast as always. Shane xxx
There was a report out recently, from some Canadian University, who looked at the "quality" of sound at concerts and festivals measured / reported by people with good hearing v people with poor hearing. Turns out that those with poor hearing want / need more vocals and more lead guitar. Given that 50% of people will have a hearing defect, more with an older audience, then 50% of the audience will complain about the sound. The solution put forward by the report was to give headphones to all audience members and allow the audience to tune the headphones to their own liking.
With pub bands we have always said that the quality of the band is inversely proportional to the sound of the band. IE if the band is crap they turn the sound way up to try and disguise it !
Loved your gig in Plymouth. You were most excellent. You were also very tolerant after the gig when my drunk mate Andy burbled at you about supporting Lynyrd Skynyrd at the NEC 😂
Chepstow sound was superb!
You mention Holmfirth being a good sounded venue to perform in ….. so glad I’ve booked tickets to see you guys there 🤘🏻 it will be our first time seeing you 💪🏻
OK, to focus on the positives...
There have been four Bands that I have thought "Wow!!! This is crystal clear. Loud, Powerful, but not over done!!!"
Status Quo - End of the Road at MK Bowl 1984 (Yes, I was a Child :) )
Motorhead - Cambridge Corn Exchange 2005.
Asomvel - Craufurd Arms, MK. A coupla years back.
Massive Wagons - Nuneaton Queens Hall, with Those Damn Crows & Ryders Creed back in 2018.
Live sound for gigs is a VERY skilled job and what the punter hears is largely down to A-The quality of the kit and B-The sound engineer. I do the easy job - I do lights. Lights are dead easy - The stage is either light or dark... But sound is continually changing with a whole load of variables and I marvel at how my audio colleagues keep on top of all those variables to produce a great gig.
The tiv was superb when u guys came earlier thus year and hope to see u at tiv again soon but on that not I'll be seeing u guys in Liverpool
Thanks for the explanation, seen you live so many times and the sound (for us) at firevolt in the tent wasn’t great. Had a good time but wondered why? But drums being loud and rest not balanced makes sense as you were on a festival PA and couldn’t turn UP everything else due to decibels. Great video❤
In the tent at firevolt the acoustics were mental depending on where you were stood...barrier was amazing
The only sound complaint i can ever remember thinking (never actually moaned at anyone) was that some bands (often support acts) were too bloody loud. I know it's rock and roll, but there's no need to deafen the audience.
Best sound I've experienced was at the Royal Albert Hall for a Devin Townsend gig. Worst was definitely festivals. Sonisphere was really bad at times during the days but it didn't bother me that much cos every headliner in the evenings had excellent sound. The first 3 years of that festival were so much fun! Shame they had to stop doing them.
Absolutely spot on - sound distribution can be heavily dependent on venue systems - Gary will provide sound advice
Agree mate. Our little Arts Centre is a converted church and requires a very specific sound set up. The in house guy knew what to do for all types of music or comedy. Cocky rock n indie bands would come in and say "Our engineer knows how we like it" and wouldn't use the local guy. Sounded shite all night 🙂
When at a gig, always try and stand in the middle section of the floor, never stand far left or far right or underneath a balcony. And never never stand next to the bar
luckily most gigs i've been to have been great, but sometimes the sound can be too loud, i try and take ear-plugs because sometimes it's just too much for me.
Powerade eh? Ah well, so the tea mug went in favour of a corporate deal... ;-)
Chepstow sound and lights were super
By the end of this episode I learned a lot 👍
I think the same about festivals , the wind is a factor but strangely the sound seems to get better from the first band all the way to the headliner who sound amazing - is that done on purpose honestly ? As a punter I want all the bands sounding as good as possible
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
You did sack the sound guy ..... I remember it used to be Big Steve 😀😀😀
Worst sounding gig I went to was when cheaptrick supported defleppard thought it sounded really poor
Had to laugh when one of the people moaning about the sound at Plymouth also complained that the mirror balls were in the way of the view....wtf i saw Ians venue photos and thought so they were all the way up there and complaining....go to a bloody silent disco. As or as Adam put it........
Sound
Oohh should finish in time for hollyoaks ❤
