Excellent! Thanks for the tutorial Rico! This will definitely help with my nightscaping shots going into Milky Way season next year. I downloaded Darktable last night and will give it a try this weekend.
Good tutorial! Would love to see an updated one - as I believe several modules names have changed - or they've been integrated elsewhere in DT - and I'm unable to find them. I'm an hour outside of Dallas Tx - and even though it's pitch black out - I get light reflecting back from moisture in the air - making the black sky look very light, yet able to get MW distinction - and I'd love to be able to adjust colors and contrast as you do in a current version of DT. Thank you again!
I have a question about editing a batch of RAW images from my GoPro Hero 9 black. I got a bunch of images (400+) from a milky way session like this, but I wanted to edit them all identically so it makes a cohesive video with no variation. obviously, doing one of these at a time would drive a person suicidal, so is there a way to batch these from a directory and give them all the same edit at once? I'm very new to darktable and this is my first experience with RAW footage, thanks.
Thank you for your question. Yes you can! Please find my preset/LUT video in which I explain how you can use the same effect on other photos. It's also explained on my latest darktable 3.6 complete tutorial
i know its been 4 years but it did help me so thanks .. but any chance you could make a new tutorial because darktable has changed a bit . again thanks for the help
@@RicoResolves i will try and get some tonight with different settings . if not i will send one of my old ones do know i do have some of light Pollution in my area so they wont be the best .
Hi Rico! Finally, I just edited my own version of the milky way and I did with DT 3.0.1 that I just downloaded. Thanks for your tips, I was able to make it look better!
@@RicoResolves I tried on my FB page but the resulting quality is unacceptable, all my work is even not noticeable. Alternative would be to post a link to my Gmail picture but then I would have to mention to my friends to click on the link to first see it in low quality, download it on their pc, then open it... Too much steps here. I tought of using something else then Gmail that would show the HD picture right away but I don't know what to use. May I ask for advice Rico?
Wonderful tutorial, thank you. You have a button bottom left called "more modules" and I cannot for the life of me find "colour brightness saturation" - where do I get more modules?
This tutorial is using an older version of darktable. The "more modules" is no longer present. If you click the three dashes on the right side in darkroom, you will be able to select presets. One of them is "Modules: all"!
Hi! thanks for the tutorial. but it would have been helpful if you have added some information how you made the foto: aperture, iso, time and so on. My original pictures differ much from yours, so it does not help just to follow your workflow.
@@RicoResolves yes, quite right, but it seems, that the extension of your raw files are different from ours here. The system told me, that I've to download new codecs to be able to open these files...
I am literally doing the same that you do but somehow my pararell lines that should separate the middle part of the picture arent working and when I clicked the yellow square that shows the effected area, the whole screen turns into yellow.... Im sure im doing something wrong :/
Hi Janus, thank you for your question! The image was shot with a 20 second exposure, 1000 ISO and F2.8 aperture. The focal length was 12mm and the lens used a LEICA 12-60mm f2.8/4.0. Camera used is a Panasonic GH5 :)!
You don't need a lot of money to be honest. If you have a lens+camera that can shoot long exposures, you can capture quite a lot of detail. However, you do need a tripod :)! If you can only go as low as F3.5, you'll just need a higher ISO (I've shot a photo on 3200 ISO too) and a longer exposure.
@@RicoResolves I didn't know that by raising ISO I get actually wider focal length. So much to learn yet, sorry for my ignorance. :/ Maybe it is possible to shot the night sky with cheap 14.42mm f3.5-5.6 Panasonic lens. Today's night is quite stormy so I have to wait a bit.
Nice video! Lot of useful info... I have to try this on some of my Milky Way shots. I always struggle with getting those right in other software. By the way: it's not "changing the worth", but "changing the value"... In this case you use value when you try to say "verander de waarde". Trust me, as a Dutch guy living in the US for the last 18 years, I've done my share of incorrect literal translations... 😂 Anyway, great video and I'll have to check out your other ones.
@@RicoResolves no problem. Is this the only video like this? Or do you have other ones for night shoots and Milky Way? And this is not with the latest darktable version, right? Any changes in modules that change the workflow?
@@erdejo01 I don't think this is the latest darktable version but I don't have more videos on star shots like these. I do have some other night photography videos
tried to rebuild it. My darktable hasn't half of the modules you're using. The demosaic module for example is not applicable like darktable tells me. Can't find the "more modules" button. At the position where your "more modules" button is, there is only a "module order" button. I am completely unfamiliar with this tool, so it would be nice if you could explain the tools and modules a little more an tell your spectators where you found those modules...
@@RicoResolves Ah okay, so this should be the problem. I downloaded it fresh tonight. Sigma 17-50 2.8 sounds good? But if aperture is to small maybe using longer exposure is a cure.
