  • What's up, collectors! I've got something very different for you today. I'll be talking about my experience watching Béla Tarr's Sátántangó at the Plaza Theatre in downtown Atlanta. It was an all-day affair and one of the most unique theater experiences I've ever had.

I'm so glad, you had a thrilling experience watching SANTATANGO in the theater. I had watch SANTATANGO in one sitting about 15 years ago on a poorly produced DVD from FACETS, but very surprisingly, I still liked the film very much (usually, poorly made DVD's of films usually turn me off because of the inferior quality, like Kino's COME AND SEE, whereas, Criterion's version was the "day" version, compared to Kino's version which was the "night" version because everything was so dark and muddy). This was probably my first foray into what was called "slow cinema". Yes, there was several emotional scenes, but the one involving an animal was especially heartbreaking. I just ordered the Arbelos BR, so I'm looking forward to watching this great film again, especially in pristine condition compared to the FACETS edition. Thanks for the recommendation.

Would definitely recommend Tarr's other films. Especially Damnation and Werckmeister Harmonies. Incredibly jealous that you got to see this theatrically.

I’m interested to see more of his work. Really looking forward to the Criterion release of Werkmeister Harmonies. I’ll definitely be picking that one up this year. I’ll add Damnation the list too. Thanks for the rec!

I watched it a few years ago on Blu Ray from Curzon Films,a British label.I watched it over two nights but the time really flew by,it did not seem long at all because it was such a strong narrative with really memorable characters, particularly the doctor and the confidence trickster and ,as you say,the dark tone of the film was lightened by the dance scene in the bar.I think Jancso was a big Influence in the use of very long takes and the desolate landscape. There was a lot of rain but apparently most of it was generated by a rain machine!

Since you liked Satantango, then you MUST watch Szurkulet,a 1990 hungarian film, directed by Gyorgy Feher,a long time friend and collaborator of Bela Tarr. This film is like watching a Bela Tarr movie. It was also released by Second Run a year ago.
It was remade by Sean Penn in 2001,under the title "the pledge",starring Jack Nicolson.

Your enthusiasm about films is so strong and contagious. I've long had a fascination with Hungarian language and culture, including films. But I've not seen many recent ones.....you make me very curious about Sátántangó....I'm looking forward to it more than ever now...

I 've never seen this film (only shorts here on RUclips) but being myself a great Tarkosky's admirer I wouldn't be put off for its length.. Glad knowing you have great Cinemas in Atlanta. Here in Europe only in London (to my knowledge) shows the film in its full length.. And only in Easter Week - keep on posting and Greetings from Spain 🎉

Make sure you see Twilight next. It is a serial killer film, also from Hungary and available from Arbelos. It actually features a soundtrack by Kate Bush. It’s great!

This one is one of those great movies I love this kind movie and yes there's a lot of long takes but that's what makes the movie so good. Everything you say in your video is right it's not a movie for everyone but if you love movies and history of movies this one is great one for sure. 😅😅😅

8 hours! Woah, DJ, once again, you remind me how uncultured swine I am (especially with you bringing up mud being everywhere!). However, thanks to you, I'm a bit more cultured...I got to see your top 3 Christmas movies, and, while I still have to think what my top Christmas movies are, A Shop Around the Corner is among my favorite romances. It's up there with Marty (1955), Phantom Thread (2017), and...I was thinking about it...
How much romance is required for you to consider a movie a romance because I was thinking, attempting to be impartial, that Gone with the Wind was the greatest romance I've ever seen, but I think, from the movies I've seen, It's a Wonderful Life is the greatest movie of all time, and, imo, that has one of the best romances with George and Mary. And if that's there, I thought Sound of Music is another 10/10...
And I've only seen it once as a kid, but I think Wall-E might be my all time favorite animated movie, and would that be considered a romance? Why stop there! Why don't I...listen to more of your thoughts. lol
Point was to thank you for the recommendation because I really like A Shop Around the Corner. It's one of the movies that's going to be in my mind regarding social media. As well as mind over matter, more than the Matrix...since I prefer The Truman Show for what I think most people like that story for. Kinda like how I prefer Wall-e to Blade Runner. Anyways!
Hope you, Grace, and the rest of your family have a wonderful weekend! You rock, DJ! You didn't talk my...oh no, I can't hear! I can't...oh nevermind I clicked mute. haha Take care!
