- The prototype S-60(57mm AZP S-60) passed the field tests in 1946 and was accepted into service in 1950.
The ZSU-57-2 officially entered service with the Soviet Army in 1955. - Наука
In Soviet Russia, AA destroyed ground forces.
As a War Thunder player that is so relatable
Anti-aircraft effectiveness of S-60 depends on targeting and control system strongly. Designer realized it clearly and made new and new AA device to calculate in future (predict) positions of cannon shell and target (their trajectories and meet point), improvements were made step-by-step.
First device was various PUAZO (Pribor Upravleniya Artilleriiskim Zenitnym Ognyem - device to control artillery AA fire), with continuous wire link between PUAZO position and cannon positions. PUAZO complex unit consist of mainly optical binocular (stereo) range finder and some calculator, actually particular mini-computer to solve single task - define location in space for meet point, for any current input values: altitude, direction and velocity of target, cannons and PUAZO positions. So team of each AA gun receive data from PUAZO, by wire connection: exact angles of elevation and direction of barrel to meet point, and a range to meet point (flight time of shell before it explosion in air near target, to adjust shell detonator manually by team member), continuously, at any time.
First types of PUAZO calculator were completely mechanical (WW2 times), next were electric-mechanical, last were electric-electronical. First types of PUAZO range finders (and target's elevation and direction finders - from finder position of course) was completely optical, binocular view was used to measure range. Next types of PUAZO used combined optical and radar methods to measure range, elevation, direction, and speed of target.
PUAZO was expensive and sophysticated device compared with AA guns or machine-guns at that times (40s, 50s, early begining of 60s years). Therefore one PUAZO device was used usualy with several cannons (AA artillery unit), and therefore connection, link to each cannon must be used. There are 3 men in each AA cannon team to aim target: for horizontal aiming (direction angle), for vertical aiming (elevation angle), and for shell detonator adjustment (range to target, or duration of shell flight before explosion); they receive some corresponding numbers, digits from PUAZO continuously through connection.
Last PUAZO device used radar (radio waves) mainly (as all-weather method), and AA cannon barrel moves towards meet point not manually, but electro-mechanical way (motor and reducer), that methods improves accuracy and time (speed) of targeting.
Soviets designed and mass produced radio-controlled shell detonators also (remote burst of shell).
As a result, in Vietnam war US aviation (combat aircrafts) was catching most losses not from AA radio-controlled missiles (soviet S-75), but from usual AA artillery (mainly S-60 cannons, soviet and chinese) equiped with effective PUAZO. In more details, long-range S-75 AA missiles created large and inevitable danger for planes at high and medium altitudes (around S-75 positions), hence it force US pilots to fly at low-medium and low altitudes, force to hide planes behind hills and small mountains, force to fly along river's valley - to reduce detection distance between radar and plane (and time to determine plane and fire a missile). But low-flight aircraft is good target for AA artillery: cannons and heavy machine-guns. Of course AA artillery units (with easy maneuvering and deploying) prefer to hide in jungle and river valleys, right on the possible plane routes, and prefer not use radio connection and radar range finders, to prevent detection before fire begins suddenly (stay silent in new ambush).
Just see statistics of US aircraft losses in Vietnam war, what types of AA weapon were involved (AA artillery, AA missile S-75, Vietnam air force fighters). Of course it needs many-many shells for AA cannon to shot down one plane, but cost of 100-200 shells (for example) and one plane is uncompatible.
operdun 1 stronk Russian drunk on vodka is better than any modern targeting system
that is a remarkable comment
thank you sir
@@zacm1368No vodka(it's expensive, and it have small alcohol degree) but antifreeze(or if you not reach enough-hawthorn tincture).
Yes, in Yugoslavia many AA guns were used as infrantry support, starting from ZSU57 to wide range of Yugoslav built 20 and 30 mm guns. 3x20mm self propelled BOV3 was especially popular together with "praga" as we called it.... 2x30mm M53/59.
It looks insane, ominous and badass
Still useful today after some modifications and upgrades, if you ask me.
Tự động hoá để bắn Hạ Drone
Good for urban warfare those mobile 57mm guns.. That will get any infantry out of a building for sure.
I always watch vintage flak videos right before chukkar and quail season. I turned this video up so I could understand it better. Then remembered I don't speak Russian. nice

War Thunder player where is the voice?
My country's still using this machine for air defence🤦♂️
What country?
It works lol
Same for my country
The bane of early mbt's in wt
Nice
what is the outro song you used for the video?
1:17 Hymns to the Idea of Night ... (Aidan Baker+Time Hecker-Fantasma Parastasie (freakenergy))
The rest of the original music, probably De Wolfe - Music Library.
Maybe that's why they still use it. I know the Yugoslavian's loved them type of Vehicles, Vehicles that were actually mean to be for the role of Anti-Aircraft instead for personal on the ground.
it may be slow firing and inaccurate compared to newer gun systems but it has better altitude than shilka or tunguska (minus missiles) and a single hit to any aircraft or light ground target means destruction, even armoured aircraft simply cannot survive the massive blast. also china still use 37mm and 57mm guns in secondary roles, and though DPRK has purchased shilkas and fitted 30x210mm guns( from ak-230 mounts, more powerful than tunguskas 30x165mm) they cannot afford mass production.
From my experience seeing this in Slovenia on one of the "military showcase days" i would say that this would be really good against helicopters.
i have found vode of these guns in use by countless modern and insurgent forces. Old yes effective? YES especially for ground fire support or killing drones
Light tank: 😳
Well ZSU57 was developed just to fill gap before Shilka was finished it was never supposed to be rly good AA gun, only really good thing about ZSU57 is that you can use it to literally decimate infrantry xD
in my country, We used it to destroy F4, F105, F111, ... and ,... US aircraft
Vietnam defeated the US.

The ZSU-57 is nothing but scrap metal compared to late 70's and 80's Soviet Equipment. I can't believe the North Koreans still used it until the early 2000's whilst it was consigned to the history books by most countries. There again they are still using MiG-19's and 21's in North Korea.
