I got the LL16, and upgraded to a custom made bone nut and saddle from a respected luthier friend, and added Waverly Galaith ( a lightweight plastic that is as dense as bone ) bridge pins, and I can honestly say this guitar has the holy grail of the sought after sound...the " bell tone ". There is a silkiness to these guitars ( from every one I have heard ) that must come from the combination of Engelmann/EIR/improved forward shifted non-scalloped bracing. The folks that designed this new version put the time in to get it right, and, wow, did they ever get it right. This guitar is destined to be one of the greatest acoustic guitars to ever exist. I'm glad I own one.

As an employee at a guitar store I have had the pleasure of trying these guitars. I can wholeheartedly say this to my ears is possibly the best dreadnought guitar in its price range. The volume you can attain from this specific model is unbelievable, I recommend using a heavy pick as this will most definitely handle what vigour you decide to throw at it. Fantastic quality and sounds phenomenal plugged in as well. As of tomorrow I will be a proud ll16 owner. Excellent video sir !! Regards from 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Volume and tone are only a small part of it....they are not easy to play even when set up low.....action is very stiff...... I've refretted two of my other cheap yamaha's and they are wonderful. I will never buy another yamaha....their customer service just plain sucks now.

    • @howabouthetruth2157

"Not easy to play even when set up low"...........you've got to be kidding. I don't even know how to respond to that. Because you are literally the ONLY person I've ever heard of who dislikes "the playability" of this model. Literally dozens upon dozens of reviews ( NOT counting the sales rep's of music stores ) on these LL16 models all over youtube, including professional gigging guitarists, even one master luthier who builds custom acoustic guitars ( Driftwood Guitars ), and every last one of them are heaping high praise on the LL16 models in every way. I'm 62 yrs old, and a lifelong guitarist. I gigged all over east/central Florida for 2 decades until I grew tired of the club scene. I love this model. I don't like it quite as much as the 3 high end Japanese Takamine's I've owned & gigged with, but they cost a lot more than this LL16. As was my 814 Taylor. ( I still loved my Tak's a little more. ) The LL16 does have a rather long scale length, but you must have some incredibly weak hands in order to "hate the action/playability" of the LL16 Yamaha's. Quite frankly, I don't think there's a new acoustic out there for $1130 that can beat this LL16, and I believe it's as good if not better than some guitars costing much more. @@cugir321

Yamaha's best kept secret. Since 1969 I've owned countless Yamaha acoustics; among them LL26, LL16, LL16D, LL6, LJ6 and a flock of FGs since my first FG180 way back when I was a kid. Lovely playing J.P., and your genuine enthusiasm for the marque is clear.

I just put a deposit down one of these today. Was one of, if not the best sounding guitar in my local music store here in Sydney, Australia. Beautiful tone and texture and lovely bass response. What a deal for a full solid guitar with rosewood!! I really like the 5 piece neck and hoping it will keep everything stable here in humid Sydney. I will do a comparison with my Eastman dread on my RUclips channel once I get it.

I recently bought a LL-TA which is essentially the same guitar with the TransAcoustic stuff inside. I've owned 10 top Martin's and 3 top Taylor's over the years. Upon opening the box with it being brand new at the store from their backstock, the in house luthier set it up with bone saddle and pins, set up for low action on the saddle height and smoothed off the fret ends, oiled the neck and when I tested it out it blew me away. It was far beyond even a D-42 I had and the Taylor's weren't even in the same zip code of performance. Yamaha sure has it going on.

G’day John, excellent review! I brought home one of these and played it in front of my son - he said it sounded better than my D28 which cost 4 times as much. Of course, I was in total denial, although I really loved the shimmering sound of the Yamaha straight off the shop wall. Over the next few weeks I had to admit he was right and, with the 1.75 inch nut, actually suited my playing style better. I can safely say that , over the past seven years it has got better and better - there you go, for me it blew my Martin out of the water! If you see one of these in the shop, don’t pass it by!

When stores opened last July ( ? ) (after first lockdown) had some money saved and went to Long & McQuade to buy an FG3 that they had. They also had one LL16 ( 'both' guitars listed for exact same amount - $1090). I played each for about 20 minutes. Both had beautiful sound..... with each having its own unique tone. Because of slight rheumatism in my hands, I discovered that the neck profile on the FG3 was killing my left hand.....thus ended up buying the LL16. ( Absolutely LOVE it !!!! ...so much so that I saved again and went out and bought an LL16-12 (12 string version) )

I've been a big fan of Yamaha's ever since I got an FG-75 while I was in Vietnam. I've had a few high-end guitars (not nearly as many as you), yet My daily picker is a Yamaha FG-TA sunburst dreadnought. Sounds good before you turn it on but press that button and the built-in chorus and reverb sends you to pickin' heaven. You can't get that tone from an amp. It comes out of the sound hole. Perfect guitar for late night picking when the wife is asleep. The system has sustain that outlasts any guitar I have owned. When the battery dies it feels like your best friend just left the room. FG-TA has veneer back and sides and is made in China while the LL-TA is all solid wood version made in Japan and has 5 piece neck like your LL-16, so basically it is the same guitar you have here but with sound effects built into the guitar. And one final thing, thanks for just now teaching me that Irish double pick pull-off trick :-) Now I just need to learn the rest of the tune...

I played bluegrass for over ten years in the 70s. I was a banjo player. As a matter of fact I played the Grand Ole Opry in 75. Pretty much all guitar players played Martins. A lot of those Martins were over 50 years old. They all sounded fantastic. Thing is to buy one like that now would be up to $10K or more. I have to say This Yamaha acoustic blows me away how they sound just as great only $1230. IMPRESSIVE !! P.S. Yamaha provides a nice hardshell case.

Nice review. I too have one of these LL16D models. I do like the sunburst finish, but these days I prefer the clear finished spruce mine has. I only paid $550 for this thing brand new, with case. Crazy deal. I wasn't even shopping for one. When I saw the price (online), with all that abalone trim, all solid wood, A.R.E. top and all, I couldn't believe it. I bought it and never looked back. I'm more of a fingerpicker, and even though it is a dreadnought, I love the tone, balance, and clarity for fingerpicking as well as strumming. The A.R.E. top sounds just great. I agree with you about the great neck they have on these as well. For what I paid, I feel like I stole it.

You sold me! Based on this review I bought one and it's in black. I love it as it is but I have an appointment with my luthier to install a bone nut and saddle, do a setup, and fit unslotted bone bridge pins and slot the bridge. However my luthier is in such demand that he's doing the work next January. That gives me plenty of time to research bridge pin materials so I may choose something other than bone. Thanks for the excellent review. BTW, this guitar has Yamaha's process similar to torifaction.

Thanks, i enjoy the odd stuff i see. Before CoV i was looking for a small Yamaha LJ6. Gave up; no show in 'straya. Was looking in eBay, so search sat there. 3+ years later i get an eBay email saying 'available'. Located in a shop in Nowra, south of Sydney a bit. Done. Too far to go and test. When arrived, zero disappointment. Top wood... Engelmann spruce. My only other is a S Korea Crafter GA7/N. Cedar top. Similar size/shape to Yami. Each give me different buzes. Thanks for your show ups. 😌

Wow, I really love the way this guitar sounds…. I went out about a year ago and bought a brand new Martin D-28 and after playing it for 3 months I decided to take it back and trade it. I ended up with a Taylor 314ce and it’s okay… much better overall than the Martin which to me sounded kind of muddy and muted. I tried several different sets of strings too before I took it back. Yes, I lost $1000 in the deal but you have to do what you have to do. I WISH that they would have had one of these Yamahas for me to try…. I want to go right out and try one for sure.. J.P, an update to my comment 11 months ago. I did get my Yamaha LL-16 12-string guitar. I LOVE it! I really want to get the matching six-string LL-16 or LL-6 guitar. These guitars are so comfortable to play, I have a hard time picking up any other brand. Every time I go to guitar center or Sam Ash Music, I try other guitars. None of them feel as comfortable as a Yamaha. The only thing about the LL-16 (the six-string) version that I’d have an issue with is which finish I’d want: natural or sunburst. Both are beautiful.

Every time I open my LL16ARE sunburst's, case, I have to try not to drool. It sounds great every time I play it. Really sounds like the GSWJ video (the guitar not my playing) I've played many Martins, Gibsons and Guild (which I always liked) and this Yamaha holds it's own with any of them. I got it here in Australia about 2 years ago 2nd hand for AU$600 ( about US$115). A bargain. I've been playing for nearly 50 years and never thought I'd end up with a Yamaha as one of my best guitars. 😁
Just love John's picking both flat picking and fingerstyle. What a man 🤠

I kinda like their motorcycles although I'm old enough to remember a Bultaco add with Bultaco brand name on a piano with the caption "absurd". They were picking on Yamaha.

I just received this same guitar LL-16 Sunburst yesterday . I think I found the only one available in the USA , This thing is an absolute bargain I paid 925.00 with tax , I played it side by side with my 16 year old Martin D-28 Marquis (witch I paid 4100.00 for new) for hours , and I must say it's right up there . It's hard to believe really , It sounds just like this video I cant wait to play it some more and get it broke in , And JP I Love your videos and You are one talented Musician . Thanks

This very guitar sound is more than 1000 $ in the Taylor field or around 3000 $ in the Martin area. So a massive split spruce top and massive rosewood sides and back and a real 1a quality ebony fingerboard for under 1000 $ is a real gift. Thank you for your video, greatings from Germany, I am with you ... :-)

It's my favorite to play and look at even compared to my D-28 . In Winnipeg , hydration is a struggle all winter , but I have never worried with this guitar . Nice to see somebody reviewing good sounding affordable guitars .

I bought this $1,000.00 LL TA but in Natural finish. No lie I've
been a Martin dread but when I bought the LL TA I had one o
those "Come to Hesus moments". First time out at my BG
club jams, a pal said " thats one of em upscale Yamahas isnt
It"? Bought it at a Ft Worth pawn shop.for less than half of
MSRP. Research showed the guitar was only 13 weeks old.
Previous owner had a "whirlwind romance" with it!!!

I picked up a Yamaha on my birthday. I picked it up cuz I was like oh Yamaha they are just some cheap guitar. I played it, looked at my wife and was was like wow this sounds better than any guitar I currently have. She’s looked at the price tag: $199. She said buy it. It was a FG 800. I was blown away it was so cheap. And it started my love. I now have only Yamaha guitars. They are amazing not only for the price but they sound better than any guitar in my opinion. Love love them

I've had an LL-16 for over a year. One of my favorites and I wouldn't take any amount of money for it. Also have the LL-16 12 string which
could compete with a $4000 Martin. Yamaha, like IBG Epiphone's some of the most under rated guitars and are some of the best sounding guitars
    out there.

I’m looking fir an acoustic to play warm jazzy blues tones. In your opinion , would anything surpass a Yamaha dreadnougt . I’m playing live in group setting . It cannot be an expensive guitar . I’ve had an old sunburst FG fir 50 years and I like the bass and power . It’s a bit unwieldy but so are many jazz boxes. I’m thinking of a cutaway Yamaha but frightened I’ll lose the bass woof and volume. I tried a gs mini …eeek . Was like shreds of ice piercing my ear drums . Your channel is so good , very addictive and informative . A unique and valuable asset . Thank you.

@@dallasfoster9016 Congratulations, a great purchase. I love mine, very satisfied. I installed John Pearse Phosphor Bronze 570c (11-52), a perfect fit and less bright than the original d'Addario. I find the John Pearse more balanced. The projection is excellent and when you activate the effects, it becomes magical. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do.
