tbh the movie seems quite scientifically accurate (i heard that the book goes a lot more in-depth in the science) and the characters, especially the main character, feel like actual people, so if i didn't know better, this movie can pass off a "based on a true story" movie
i had a similar thing with a tv show on national geographic, they had a show about people lving in mars and i couldnt tell if they filmed the actual thing or if it was fake, i felt retarded ngl
Lol. But he basically saves himself. Had his co-astronauts not been able to reach him, Mark would have made himself a Silver Surfer suit and skateboard back to Earth on the waves of dark energy. Making the whole Marvel franchise obsolete.

There is a lot of science in both the movie and book, and it's awesome. The only major scientific inaccuracy is the storm, but that can be given the creative licence card. Sometimes, you have to ignore a few things to make the story intresting.
By no means is the storm the only inaccuracy. Mars' weaker gravity isn't demonstrated, and the overall technology required in this film is 20 years away at best.

Reacting hydrogen and oxygen is basically burning hydrogen gas, except rather than using the limited amount of oxygen in the air, you're feeding the fire. That is the rosary. During combustion, oxygen is added to a molecule, which produces water in this reaction. That's how he watered the potatoes.
The alarms that woke up Mark were that his suit no longer had nitrogen to mix with his atmosphere and that his CO2 scrubbers were fully saturated. So he was breathing pure oxygen and the suit was "blood-letting" by venting the atmosphere to remove the CO2 while backfilling with pure oxygen again. The greatest danger to his body was too much oxygen mixture compromising his nervous system.
Mark is a braver (and more resourceful) human than me!!! There is no way I could perform surgery on myself like he did...I would faint just from seeing the blood everywhere, not to mention the horrific pain of being impaled! Also...being alone on the planet...would make him the King of Mars!

After the last couple of years. If I could produce my own food, water, oxygen, and had parts to repair my shelter. Then they could leave me on the red planet and not come back. Lol
My headcannon is that Watney, after returning to earth, and possibly undergoing some therapy over the next couple of years, managed to convince NASA that he was fit for the Lazarus mission, leading into Interstellar where he proves that the year or two where he was stranded on Mars, despite having a way to communicate with Earth and possible therapy after was useless, he was cowardly by sending out an affirmative signal from his planet.

Eh it's a fictional world where NASA actually has the budget to do cool stuff like this with ease. Plus Nations tend not to want to f**k each other space. Course I say that and Russia almost did just that recently.
I remember my friends and me spontaneously deciding to watch this in the theatre, knowing nothing about the plot except for the title. We were 20 minutes into the movie confused as hell because the Martians/aliens were still nowhere to be found LMAO
Imagine that, a space movie without some redicilous form of monster or characters that act like drama queens AND that actually show some respect to the science part of the sci-fi genre. Imagine that. I didnt think hollywood had it in them.
Sure, it's based on a true story, I think most people know that actually. But it's been embellished and exaggerated quite a bit for dramatic effect, and many details don't match the accurate sequence of events.
If you liked the movie I highly recommend you read the book by Andy Weir. I will warn it is alot more technical then the movie, but it is still a fun read...mainly because of Watney.
I think it was supposed to be a scenario of a huge misunderstanding that ended up with one being stranded on Mars as opposed to the usual scenarios of everyone dying or no man left behind.
