    9:07 this is the best section of the video easily, the improvements made in 7 and especially 8 deluxe are fantastic. I know a lot of people who complain about the distance mechanic, despite it completely fixing cluster issue that was mentioned. It forces you to play smarter with better items, so you can save them for when you really need them. The fact that powerful items can't be obtained on the first box was also one of the best changes for the series.

    I don't know man, I feel like the chaos is what used to be so charming about Mario Kart. Double Dash and Wii are the best ones to me because it's just mayhem. MK7 and 8 feel so lifeless because of how they fine tuned the item balance and controls. The polish of these games kinda sucked out the essence of what is Mario Kart to me. And besides, Wii/DD control absolutely fine if you are just a bit careful with your driving imo. And it's not just nostalgia. I played both not so long ago and they're just as fun as I remember them being.

    I personally think that MKWii is much more skill based than luck based compared to MK8DX. Wii has a ton of high-skill shortcuts that have raised the skill ceiling really high. 8DX doesn’t have any high-skill shortcuts. Also I’d absolutely take the thunder cloud, pow block, and mega mushroom over the coin, boomerang and fire flower. Those items suck
    Edit: After putting a significant amount of time into MK8DX and it’s online after making this initial comment, my opinion still stands. Putting aside the rough but serviceable net code that leads to a ton of “phantom” hits, MK8DX still feels much more item and luck based compared to Wii, to me at least. The overall scale of 8DX is so vastly different compared to Wii, where items like the shells and obstacles like goombas are around the same size as a medium player car. I also still think the boomerang and fire flower are way too good. Both have no telegraphing, the boomerang goes through back trails, and the fire flower can be used like a shotgun which is very effective. Also the red shell is a missile in 8DX compared to Wii, and rarely misses. Partner all of that with how grabby Lakitu is, and yeah I still think Wii is much more skill-based than luck based.

    Astronaut continues to have the best take on everything except mario kart gameplay. Sure Mario Kart Wii's itemplay is brutal, but to call it the most luck based, even going as far to compare it to Baby Park couldn't be further from the truth. I'd go as far as to say it is the Mario Kart game with the highest mechanical depth in the series and that getting proficient is both extremely challenging, and incredibly satisfying.
    But that said, to experience this side of the game, you likely have to go out of your way to pick one of the few "meta-defining" vehicles in the game and learn some of the game's more complex shortcuts/techniques. What astounds me though is that Astronaut went as far as to describe the modding scene and custom tracks, but has a complete disconnect about this game's skill ceiling in spite of this normally less common knowledge

      @JacobPDeIiNoNi 6 месяцев назад

      @@XyLo2517 The shock timer is in 8 deluxe as well, it prevents shocks being pulled for 30 seconds after the first is pulled. Double shocks can only happen if the first person waits a long time, and then the second person dodges, which is very unlikely. Though it can still happen. There is absolutely skill and calculation in 8dx shock dodging, the existence of double shocks in no way disproves that. If you don’t think so you haven’t seen enough high level 8dx, particularly on bagging tracks where shock dodging is at its most relevant.
      Also you’re just definitively wrong saying second place commonly gets double red shells. Unless first has a large breakaway second has a 36.9% of pulling a red shell, so the chances of a double red is 13.6%. Not impossible, but it is very far from constant or even likely. Also keep in mind second won’t always want to use both their red shells because doing so leaves them defenseless, and it’s also possible for first to pull double defense (9.18% if I calculated correctly which is just below the chance for second to pull double reds.) And yes those unfair moments DO still happen, I’m not denying that, sometimes second gets triple reds (though that’s only if first is super far ahead) or double reds. But those unfair moments happen in MKWii too. In particular blue shells are generally much more common. It’s a maximum 30% chance every item set that somebody pulls a blue shell, and while rates won’t actually be that high assuming not everybody chains their items it’s still leagues higher than anything you’ll see in a real game of 8dx. Not to mention dodging a blue is even less reliable than in 8dx, given horns don’t exist and holding a mushroom leaves you defenseless from reds, unlike dx’s double items which let you carry both mushrooms and defense. Realistically both games can (and often do) unfairly rob first of wins, it just happens more often because of reds in 8dx and blues in Wii.

    • @XyLo2517
      @XyLo2517 6 месяцев назад

      @@JacobPDeIiNoNi the fact double shocks are even possible in the first place is a red flag. Not to mention you don’t get shocked if you’re behind the shock used which means you can just have them shock and the person behind them use shock… also the red shells in 8 are just painfully too common.. they’re much more balanced in wii. And there’s a slew of items in 8 that don’t even do anything (excluding the coin) case in point the pirahna plant and fire flower. Wii did have the TC but it was thrown in to intentionally be detrimental to the user. Meanwhile the plant and fire flower take up an entire slot for an extended period time which is a slot you can’t use for another item. Triple bananas are also a sham since you can’t even tailgate all 3 of them. Not even the shells act as a consistent barrier since the gap is big enough for a red shell to hit you. Protection in this game is just downright awful and before you say wii had no way to hit first with the red shell, the fake item box was the equalizer which didn’t protect you from reds but you didn’t get it every time

    I can certianly understand all the points brought up. For me, what makes 7 and 8 so boring compared to wii (and even DS) is the lack of interesting item play. In deluxe specifically, every race devolves into everybody getting nothing but mushrooms and stars for 99% of the race, while someone in first is just coasting along with no threats at all. Whilst the rest of the pack are hitting each other with endless stars and the few normal items getting thrown around, which just means it is extremely difficult to break out ahead of the pack. With wii, i feel like there are more "unblockables" in the form of lightning, thunder clouds, mega mushrooms, pow blocks, blue shells getting thrown around that makes every game more interesting overall. You never know whats going to happen and it is always possible to break out of the main pack and into the top placings, without having the issue deluxe has of nothing but boost items. It can certainly be tuned to be a bit fairer for sure in wii, but the absolute chaos leads to more fun ultimately. You can have someone running an optimal build and they still lose cus of the fun item play, whereas in deluxe everyone uses waluigi/wiggler car/tiny wheels and those who do almost always take up the top couple of spots, and as such never get hit by anything like i mentioned before. Not to mention that the red shells can "cheat" somewhat in wii, meaning that you have to angle your car right to block them instead of just "hold a banana behind you for instant block". Theres just no skill to the item play or base driving mechanics in deluxe, whereas its the complete opposite for wii. Theres more bullshit, but also more ways to deal with said bullshit in interesting ways.

      If you played online in 8 Deluxe, players in the front have to deal with countless reds thrown from players in the middle. Assuming that the players in the front have the same skill level, the race just devolves into how many reds can I pull to overtake the person in front of me.

    • @matlotl
      @matlotl 2 года назад +21

      @@burnypython8230 I've unfortunately played tons of 8 deluxe online, and from my experience you get:
      1st place tearing away in a waluigi/wiggler/roller wheels combo with bananas/green shells to easily defend from 2nd
      2nd place a bit behind (usually with a very similar kart combo) and never catching up cus 1st gets defensive items that take no skill to use, just drag behind to easily block anytthing. so 2nd usually also assumes defense and essentially plays the same as 1st
      3rd - 5th getting red shells, other interesting items for a variety of uses. rarely allows them to break into the top 2 and they just sorta jostle amongst themselves and occassionally swap places with some lower placed players
      6th -12th getting nothing but mushrooms/stars/bullet bills, which ultimately do not help them to break out of the lower half because they just end up hitting each other and not actually catching up to the top of the pack much. maybe break into the 3rd to 5th group at best
      Theres just very little way for people to swap positions very much at all, the item play does not really allow for comeback plays at all. blue shells are rare, and if they do hit the worst that happens usually is 1st goes down to 4th. but mostly they either keep their place or swap with 2nd cus they are THAT far ahead with no threats, not to mention the horn just invalidates the blue so 1st has even less to potentially worry about. lightning affects everyone, and can bring the overall pack together a bit, but not by a whole lot. its mostly just 4th and below hitting each other and not getting much of an advantage of the rest, with the top few placings being a lock from the start of a race.
      you can be playing your ass off and theres just no advanced mechanics to take advantage on to get the edge; drifting is easy and uninteresting, items do barely anything a lot of the time as mentioned, the best you get is item smuggling but again, how do you break out of a clustered pack carrying powerful items if you can rarely even get out of said pack even using items to do so?
      then with wii, there is always the chance to make a break because it has wilder items that can be pulled at a multitude of places; there was never cases of "okay i got X item and nothing but and i cannot escape the pack" in wii. and wii has actually interesting and rewarding driving mechanics to begin with, so you can rely on those to help you get up in the race if you are good enough, and item smuggling is easier because of it, which allows you to make some incredible comebacks.

If you are playing on a smuggling track like Dry Dry Desert or Yoshi Circuit, the race is free for players in the back as you get so much value from speed items, plus there is a bullet extension spot on the waterfall in Yoshi Circuit. However the unfortunate part is that most of the tracks are pure frontrunning where if you get screwed over in the beginning, there is no way you can make a comeback.
      One more problem I forgot to mention in 8 and 8 Deluxe are back thrown items. In other Mario Kart games, back thrown shells travel slower than shells thrown frontwards so players can react. However, in 8 and 8 Deluxe, back thrown shells travel the same speed, which gives players no time to react.

    Almost all of the main complaints aren’t even true or can be mediated.
    1. 3/4 controller options don’t use motion steering.
    2. Lack of vehicle balance doesn’t exactly define gameplay. You can still play the entire game and do everything with a few of the best vehicles, which is what most people do.
    3. Online service still exists through wiimmfi servers in which hackers are banned.
    4. The modern ctgp time trial leaderboards are secure and don’t have hacked times either. Even before 2014, community leaderboards would offer correct rankings because nobody considered nintendo’s to be accurate.
    5. Complaining about luck in a mario kart game lol. Many people would even say mkw is less luck based than mk8 considering how high the skill cap in mkw can be. And even if item luck isn’t your thing, that’s what time trials or online tt is for. Success is determined solely by driving in those modes.
    6. There are not any unlockables that need above 1 star rank which is essentially guaranteed if you get 60 points. 3 star rank is just for extra clout.
    7. The addition of coins arguably makes getting hit worse than in mkw because you lose even more speed over time from the lost coins.
    8. If you bring up frantic items mode in mk8, then you have to acknowledge the strategic items mode in mkw that removes all power items that were complained about earlier.

I think one point that Is bring up in response to your points is that many people like the chaos that’s seen in MKWii and combining that with all of the good things you said at the beginning of the video, it makes for a spectacular game. @@CaptainAstronaut I feel like I have to point out that bullet bill in mariokart wii will only get you 5 positions ahead. It has both a time limit and position limit, so if you use it at 12th place itll drop you 7th or 8th, sure the wind down time happens after you pass the fifth driver so you might be able to pass more racers, but since you can time the use yourself that makes it a skill based effect, you should try to save it till you are 6th or 5th to get the best outcome. I feel like shortcuts are meant to be punishing if you fail them, that makes the game more skill based. You get rewarded for being good at the game if you manage to use the shortcut, and get punished for not being good enough.
      Also I think your point about mkwii being more luck based, is simply not true. Everything that would make the game luck based, you can affect with a good strategy. Notice theres a big clump of racers? Nice this is good time to drop a few places to get stronger item. Notice a red shell coming for your ass? Time to change your driving line so that the redshell hits the wall before you.
      Blueshells keep f'ing up your races? Just use a well timed mushroom or boost pad to dodge it. Or simply wait around 2nd place with a power item to dodge the eventual blueshell and win the race before the next one comes? Oh the lightning took away your items? Well luckily theres a delay in when people can get the lightning so you can save a strong item for that time and because people often spam it you can time you star/mega mush/bullet to get a shock dodge and way ahead.

    Time to defend my favorite Mario Kart of all time:
    1. The physics may not be as good as MK8 nowadays, but that’s the same deal with older mario kart games in general. You just have to get used to it more.
    2. There are some extremely good picks for tracks in this game such as coconut mall, DK Summit, N64 DK’s Jungle Parkway, Moonview Highway, Moo Moo Meadows, Wii Rainbow Road, and the list goes on and on
    3. A lot of the music in this game is super catchy
    4. The Mega Mushroom is really fun and satisfying to crush other racers
    5. The graphics may not look the best, but it is the Wii after all, which was really underpowered for its time
    6. The game can be very enjoyable when putting a good amount of time into it.
    7. Yes the game may be more brutal, but that’s what makes mario kart shine as a whole. The chaotic and mayhem factors that MKWii and the older games have is what makes them super enjoyable.
    I’m not saying it’s the best one, but it definitely beats most Mario Kart games out there, as one of the few older mario karts to age pretty well if you put in some time to the game nowadays.
    Edit: Yes, there were 2 items (Storm cloud and POW block) that were not so great, but that aside, it is still a really fun game

      Mario Kart DS came out four years earlier and the handling in that game is absolutely rock solid, arguably better than MK8. They consciously decided to make MKWii a pile of slippery garbage for literally no reason.
      Likewise, the graphics just look ugly. They looked ugly at the time, and they still look ugly now. Awful, shiny, plastic character models, bloom up the ass and bizarrely 'washy' textures make for a game that is visually repulsive, and a considerable step down from Double Dash, which was on weaker hardware. I'd even say that DS has a better overall aesthetic.
      You can't really brush off fundamental issues by saying 'its an old game' when none of the previous (older) games suffer from those issues.

    Refreshing to see a standout opinion on this game for once, and I can't say I disagree with your points. I remember renting this back in 2008 and found it very frustrating to play then, even with my buddy over! We were excited to try this out, but ended up going back to playing Brawl after getting "Mario Karted" (the guys on GameFAQs had another word for it, but can't say it here) out of wins constantly on our quest to get 3-star rankings.
    Picked it up half a decade later to give it another shot and unleash my inner tryhard. Turns out, karts and Birdo are irrelevant, wheelie chaining and ultra cuts aren't nearly as fun as spamming miniturbos offroad or longboosting off of jumpads and demolishing entire tracks, and half the courses make Vanilla Lake 2 look like a joyful experience by comparison!
    Those are just a few of my gripes, but I would honestly rather play any other Mario Kart over Wii. Yes, even 8 Deluxe and Super Circuit. It's a fine game on its own, but titles like Double Dash, DS, and even SMK are WAY more fun and skill-instensive than the internet would have you believe.

    I can't help but be a little...disapointed with this video. Wii is my favorite, so I was interested in seeing a different perspective from mine, but the critiques here are lacking compared to your usual output. The gameplay section only went into item balance and physics. No talk of the mechanics, the course design, or even anything outside of grand prix. I'm not saying these would save the game for you, but they should be mentioned because they address some of your complaints. Wii has a lot of tricks that are hard to learn and help with shortcuts, wouldn't that make it closer to a skill-based game? You mentioned Wii had bad course design in another video. That one said a bit about Coconut Mall, but what about the other Nitro tracks, how are they poorly designed? Wii also has an option to lower the frequency of powerful items, does that change enough? If not, why? This is probably why the video is such a letdown for me, it doesn't feel like a proper critique.

It's annoying that stars earned in higher cc grand prix don't trickle down to the slower ones, something they would do in 8, but the specific goals for specific karts and characters gives you a challenge that just collecting coins in MK8 doesn't. Interestingly, I agree with many of the points, and those are the reasons why I think Mario Kart Wii is the best Mario Kart game. One point, the main problem you had with the game, the increased dependency on luck, was a huge reason I loved it, because it meant it was always fun with friends. Playing some of the other games with friends of varying skill levels always feels kind of dull because there's such a gap that item interactions ended up being kinda rare. Mario Kart Wii aggressively levels the playing field, making interesting events constant. Oh, the worst player among us is suddenly first now right before the end of the race because of a bullet bill? Oh, the blue shell knocked you out right before the ending, causing you to lose? Oh, you were in the way of someone right as they activated a star and you had no time to react? All of these things are admittedly the bane of skill-based play, but here it feels like the game is aggressively shaking the board so that no one can dominate and meaningful interactions are always happening.
    And, while I can acknowledge that this system is easily exploitable, I also feel like, in a social setting, no one's taking it too seriously to begin with, so the fact that playing optimally is a chore is sort of a non-issue because no one's playing that way to have fun.

    I wouldn’t really say it awards you for racing badly. For most of the race people aren’t greatly clumped up together, they’re much more spread out, so one item isn’t going to take you straight to 1st. This is also the point at which it becomes more driving skill, to be able to stay ahead of everyone else when in first. Although around the middle it is a bit of a crap fest, but the chaos of it mixes well with the overall skill, cause you do still need skill to dodge items etc.

If you are in the middle places you have chances to get items that doesn't help you at all (Thundercloud, POW Block, Blooper, Blue Shell). If you are in the last places you get the best items and you can have a strategy where you start last to get a specific item to finish the races the best.

    Add the horn that repels blue shells - I just went back to playing this game and omfg the blue shell is to overpowered. Like i will be in 1st in a race and then damn blue shell and because it takes forever to get back i place like 5th.
    Make it that you cannot get the most overpowers items in the game right at the start - That many times someone has used lightning bolt near the start is unreal
    Balance out at the karts and bikes - i feel like most people now use the classic funky kong and bowser bike because it’s the most OP and it would nice to see the majority of them balanced
    Change the rank system - Instead of A B 1 star 2 star 3 star just remove the A & B, and if it poses the question oh then aren’t characters easier getting them make the player get 2 or 3 stars to unlock them, say if you placed 1st, 3rd, 3rd 3rd you would get 1 star if you placed 1st, 2nd, 2nd 2nd you would get 2 starts and 1st 1st 1st 1st!
    Sadly none of these changes could happen since it’s like 16 years old but i wish it would be like these

    Your main point is factually incorrect, the game is very competitive, even if I get perfect luck against higher skill players in Online, I still lose, no amount of Bullet Bills or Chain Stars have ever saved me in online multiplayer, the only one time I got happy music in all my matches, I entered Lap 3 in 2nd. If you drive well enough, it is possible to be blue shelled and not lose 1st place. But I will admit the constant frantic items can be annoying sometimes. I could not disagree with this video more, yes the wii wheel is not as responsive as a controller but you can use a classic controller, GameCube controller, or Wii remote & nunchuck. Yes bikes are great in wii but at least they are still unique. MK8 removed wheelies & inside drifting which is what made it fun in the first place. Yes the game has bloom which makes it look considerably worse than DD but on dolphin you can remove it & the game looks great! Yes the battle mode is only teams which is not ideal but at least the maps were super fun. Also I play this game all the time and you ARE incentivized to play good, losing last second IS the exception NOT the rule, winning last second IS the exception NOT the rule. Yes getting star ranks in wii is challenging but that’s the point, In 8 Deluxe you can earn them without even trying. Saying this game hasn’t aged well is one thing but saying this game was always bad is another, & saying this is the worst Mario kart has to be a crime! Worse than Super Mario kart, Mario kart Super circuit??

    It's more entertaining to play and watch than 7 and 8. It's the chaos that made me love the franchise so much especially mario kart Wii. The races in mario kart 7 and 8 are lifeless. Against CPUs,. you're pretty much alone after the second lap. If you want a challenge in those games you have to play online. I definitely agree with you on the graphics though and the game clearly wasn't balanced. mario kart ds had the best battle mode imo. Definitely would not call it the worst that is a stretch. There's too many additions to the experience for me to call it even the 3rd worst..

    Mario kart Wii is the most skill based Mario kart. Complex movement, short cuts, ultra cuts, etc. Also astro if you get hit than just do a stand still mini turbo by holding drift and brake then you go full speed. I highly suggest watching TWD98, he plays competitively, online in current year. They even have new game modes and better mod tracks than in 2009. What I do agree with is the balance of the karts and characters being bad. It's probably why funky Kong got sent to the shadow realm after wii, he was too good. Another thing, most of the items in wii suck. Pow is countered by doing a trick, bombs are unreliable, green shells move in slow motion in this game, Mega mushroom is super rare and only really good for dodging lighting, most of the maps have tight turns meaning the gold mushroom is hardly useful. The bullet is good but it's also good in eight too and it's meant to be good in the first place. Thunder cloud(not lightning) is not fun, and red shells are busted. I do agree with your reasons for not liking the game astro. It's surprising a bad party game unless you got friends to fool around and I doubt many people besides the ones playing from the start will start grinding Mario kart Wii as an eSport in 2022.

      Yeah, this guy doesn’t have a clue of what he’s talking about. It’s actually the most skill based MK game. So I don’t know where he’s coming off saying that it’s very luck based. It arguably has the best tracks in the whole series. My only real gripes with the game is with the lack of i frames after getting hit with items and the battle mode, which I think is one of the worst in the series. Other than that, I disagree with so many of this dude’s other points.

    • @ojaylenjones2301
      @ojaylenjones2301 2 года назад +1

      @@HugoSoup57 I actually think it's the best battle mode in the series. The most tracks, the most players, maps are huge and dynamic. Deluxe's battle mode alright too though. What other battle modes are worth playing. 64 is to small, double dash lacks maps, Ds is gimmicky with the microphone, super Mario kart is really hard to aim, vanilla 8 was jank with where you could hide/run away forever because they were race tracks. If wii has the worse battle mode then all the battle modes suck, but I haven't played 7 yet so maybe that's the best.

    I love Mario Kart Wii. It's probably my most played Mario Kart as well as tied for my favourite with 8 Deluxe. That being said, I can totally understand your point of view when it comes to the game. You point out a lot of genuine flaws with the game like the wonky physics, terrible kart and character balancing and harsh unlockables (7 years have passed since I had this game and for the 5 that I played it, I still don't have Dry Bowser or Rosa). It felt like all of your points had some validity to them, and I respect your opinion. The one thing I will respectfully disagree with is the music criticism you made for not only Wii but the series as a whole before 8. You just say it "kinda sucks" but I personally found a lot of tracks great. Now I'm not defending every theme hear, there's gonna be some duds like Grumble Volcano or DK Pass but the rest is far from bad in my opinion. You got classics like Toad's Factory, Shroom Ridge, Wario Colleseum, Waluigi Pinall ect. There's a plethera of great music options to not only listen in the game but also outside of it and I feel like you kinda sold it short. This is obviously still just my opinion and I still respect yours.
