  • In this week's video a walk around the village for some photography opportunities but I also want to consider something that would be an issue for many of us who have photography as a major part of our lives. What if i couldn't do photography anymore?
I hope you'll enjoy the photography and the topic

Hi Ralph! I'm so pleased you spoke about this subject in your video. As I've probably mentioned before, I'm a wheelchair user (for the purposes of photography I now use a Powerchair) so it's a subject I have first hand experience of. And it does place a great deal of restrictions on my photography. For a start, I can only access the places that are 'wheelchair friendly'. I can't just suddenly decide I want to go on a five mile hike to the top of a mountain or something like that. I can't even go anywhere where the ground is too uneven or muddy because I'll get stuck! As you can probably imagine, a lot of landscapes are 'No Go' areas. Added to this, I can't drive, so I'm also restricted to places I can get to by bus or train. However, I am very grateful that I can do this, because up until very recently I was using a Mobility Scooter which wasn't even allowed on ANY public transport.
Of course, this is only part of the story. I too have to deal with a certain amount of pain, which also restricts how long I can come out for before things start to get very uncomfortable! I'm also restricted as to how much gear I can carry, AND how I carry it. I don't generally use a tripod, because it just gets in the way. I occasionally use a monopod, whenever I choose to do long exposures, which isn't often. So as you can see this thing I have called a 'disability' does place quite a lot of restrictions on me and creativity.
By the way, yes it does tend to help if you take the lens cap off! 😁😁 I can't count the number of times I've done the same thing, don't worry!

I'm glad you liked the subject this week and it's to hear that, despite the challenges, you are still able to enjoy your photography even if it is with restrictions. I hope you can continue to find some accessible locations and don't leave the lens cap on too often🤣. Thank you for watching and commenting

I too am a wheelchair user and have tried to not let it interfere with what I want to do as a photographer however as you say there are too many restrictions to undertake some of the shooting I would have liked to do. I am very lucky that I have a 4WD chair which gets me on the beach and in the bush and through mud and rougher terrain - to a point. They say the chair can't climb steps, but it can🤭. I have added issues in that I have fatigue, cannot hold heavy things and have some tremor stuff going on as well. I have adapted to shooting primarily handheld for the reasons you have said and using faster shutter speeds. I have also changed the subject matter that I shoot including stuff like portraits that I was never keen on. I have learnt to enjoy the challenge of learning new techniques etc. Please don't take this as a winge, I have found focussing (pun intended🙂) on what I can do versus what I can't turned my attitude around. May we all continue to enjoy photography for many years to come. Thanks to Ralph for your videos as much of what you do, I can do providing there is access.

@@darrenjennings I've also found that focusing on what I can do rather than what I can't do has helped me too. That in itself, can become a bit of a 'voyage of discovery!' I'd love one of the All Terrain chairs but they're 'a bit' out of my price range! 😂😂
I also suffer from fatigue after having a stroke about 6 years ago.

You could have been talking about me, my fit legs became unfit about 5 yrs ago so walking cycling climbing hills long days in the woods carrying loads of gear came to a end, however I can get out with a walking stick for about an hour or two in nice photo weather, its just one camera and one lens I take about 25 pictures and do my best to get them right first time in camera! Most of my pictures are local and thank god my sight is still good so I can still look and try and compose a picture, I hate driving so I use public transport, I have never been keen on carrying gear so for a long time now it's been one camera and one lens and sometimes a tripod mainy in the wintertime. I am happy with what I take and most of it goes on Insta. I will never use AI or replace skies. Thanks for your input on this your video really does make sense, by the way I am over 80 and still have a holiday abroad when possible...Thank you!

Great topic Ralph and like you I nearly ended up walking with sticks due to a hip problem, thankfully sorted now and if the hip problem couldn't be fixed I would have bought a mobility scooter. If not, just watch your videos. Great set of photographs. Ai still very new and I'm sure this will be used more and more. Many thanks for sharing your work and have a great week.

Brilliant Ralph and also a very interesting and debatable topic of conversation, AI is not for me because it's not photography it's digital art. There's nothing wrong with that if that's your form of art and good luck for those artists. I do sympathize with your back problem, as i've had sciatica over the winter months and you wonder if your ever going to get better again and that's scary. Loved the images they were FAB

Great subject content today Ralph, I am not a great fan of AI and take the view if you are a beginner learn photography the right way first. There’s nothing wrong if you want to experiment with AI
But keep it in context. The age process happens to us all but we are all great at adapting and finding away around our problems. Hope the back is more comfortable soon. 👍👌

The problem with AI in the U.S. is the work is not allowed to be copyrighted. That's the latest from the US Copyright Office. So, if someone generates AI art someone else can use for whatever purposes they want to use it even to make money and the person who generated it has no legal recourse. It's basically considered public domain. I know a family member who uses Photoshop to draw and create images but she doesn't employee AI to generate content. The stock company I contribute to sent out a message to us asking if we wanted to contribute to their data sets. They pay next to nothing. They decided to split money they receive with the photographer for the original image but I understand it's basically next to nothing. Currently Getty is suing an AI company for using images without permission. AI is a mess and I think will always be a mess. If I can't go out to take pictures I will take an old fashioned pencil and draw on an old fashioned piece of paper and create my own work. I would be extremely satisfied with that. I know someone who is a quadriplegic who is able to paint and draw by using her mouth. It does take some thinking outside of the box but most of the time it works. No, I'm no fan of AI. It's been used for nefarious purposes such as winning photography contests. People like to fool other people on Facebook by posting AI images and making them think they are real. Too much bad with AI. A lot of people are not liking it either especially the ones who got fooled. I'm no Spring chicken and neither are most in my photography club but we manage. If we aren't able to go out we stick something like a pan a water or a bird feeder outside and take pics of the birds that come by. I'm sure I will have negative comments directed toward me. I already have especially from photographers who want to use AI because it's easy, the path of least resistance. Even beginners are resorting to AI versus learning how to take a good image. You probably didn't expect this comment but that's how I feel about it. You got some nice shots! Thanks for sharing!

I'm glad you liked the shots Patty and I appreciate your thoughts on the topic of AI. I'm fully aware that there are serious concerns once any kind of commercial element comes into play and I also don't like the idea of AI being used to misrepresent anything (I mentioned something to that effect I think in the video). No negative comments from me about your opinions on this, I really do understand the concerns. Thank you for watching and commenting
