- Here's my review about the Vox Big Bad Wah
Thanks to DUNLOP for their HOT POTZ II 100kOhm that fits in most CryBabys Wah Pedals
Vox Technical Support you deserve 0 out of 5 Stars for never replying to my Email and to my Posting on your FORUM, Vox Manufacturing you deserve a 2 out of 5 Stars for selecting a Cheap Potentiometer.
@ 2:58 you can hear the OLD Pot ...
can you imagine that the first pedal I bought the scratching noise was 20 times worst than this one
@ 9:33 you can hear the NEW Pot .... sounds lot better ... no more scratching
Thanks Patricio,
Mine had the same issue, noisy as hell THROUGH THE AMP after the first day. I emailed Vox support and didn't hear anything for 2 months, then finally a reply to get a Return Authorization and send it back. I figured the new one would just do the same thing after awhile, so I bought the Hot Potz II and followed your instructions. I'm no electronics expert, and it took awhile to desolder, but the rest was easy thanks to you.
Now it sounds like butter!
Thanks again, -cp
@Megdidar I just returned the Fulltone Clyde Deluxe because it was too noisy and didn't play well with my pedalboard. The VOX compares favorably to the Clyde.
Wow, good thing I bought the Ibanez WD 7 instead, optical circuits do not have the problem of scratching potentiometers plus they are far more durable and reliable..
I haven't this pedal but i really appreciate that you share your knowledge with us. Continue to share it i like it :)
... Maybe it's just me but on the new Satriani album on the track Dream Song, the intro is played with an overdriven tone and some wah. I think I can actually hear the crackle you're referring to.
Excellent Job sorry you had to go through that , I would love to buy this product so leary now ! It's good to know how to fix things well done again !!!
It's not a big deal to make this rework ... but it needs a few tools and I plan to do some other MOD on it soon ...
Excellent review. Sad to hear about the the horrible Vox support. Great work :)
Great Video Patricio, I was thinking of getting the wah. What other parts look cheap on it?
I agree with the optical circuitry ... they should have used that for the Big Bad Wah :/
Bah, I was quite interested in this one prior seeing this video. Lack of feedback on harmony-central etc. was bit suspicious too. It is priced almost to boutique range and it seems that it's still cheaply made. No true bypass on any of the Satriani range pedals either. I'm still happy with my time machine (lack of trails is a bit letdown but anyway...). I guess I'll keep searching for Budda wah or something similar...
Replace the pot with a new one that you get at your local music store or find it on Ebay ... replace with same value most of Crybaby's from Dunlop use 100k HOTPOTZ
Thanks for your effort in making this video. I was going to get the Big Bad Wah (I have the Satchuator), but now I'm not. It's pathetic that Vox would use lousy parts like that.
It's the only one for now ...
Vox technical support is really cheap too :/
Coming soon MOD V2 I'm still waiting for a part to be delivered ... the 100k potentiometer will be changed for a 470k and 3 trimpots to make some more adjusments and more ... should be done in a week or 2 max
my big bad wah also made some scratching noises. i started using it alot and it stopped the noise. it is a great wah pedal
thanks for the review, was thinking of getting 1
@Burnroses it's a really basic fix, you just need the right tools & parts
3 wires to unsolder ... a new pot ... 3 wires to solder back on the PCB ... it's DONE
@BluesRockGuitarist Sorry I don't know but many chances that it will be Ok
Yeah the first Big Bad Wah that I had ... was like 20 times worst than the one you hear in the Video ... I had it exchanged right away !
Bought in Montreal @ Steve's Music Store
Appreciate you doing this. I have the same problem. Gonna try this. Was thinking about going with the higher "K" pot
Wow.. I saw not only a cheap pot, but a cheap switch also... it is not true bypass. On the cry babies, a common mod is to remove the input buffer and replace the switch with a true bypass switch (3PDT).
@GuitarsUnite Good to know that this video might have helped you, mine is still workin' better than the ones sold in stores :D Cheers
Make sure to install the same Value of Potentiometer and there should be no difference in Tone
good thing i saw your vid, i was thinking about getting the same pedal but changed my mind after this, i mean if you're goin' to shell out a good amount of cash for something that you expect to work properly but it turns out to be shitty and needs reworking , it's just crazy because you endup spending more like for your labor and replacing parts...anyways tnx for this post you've been very helpful cheers =)
I have this pedal and I haven't had any problem yet. But I really appreciate your video. thanks a lot. NOw I know what to do If this happens to me.
Nice review!!! Good "Advert" for signature stuff. They only care about earn money not about quality.A lot of of signature products are rubbish.
Thanx for video!!!
Thank you SO much PatricioDeLaRosa for this very very informative and pedagogical video. I have the same problem but now I know how to solve it. You posted this video 3 years ago and still the same issue pops up again and again. Hey Joe out there, we love your pedal but plz DO something.
@PatricioDeLaRosa i had the same problem with my vox wah and fixed the pot it works better now then any other in the store =)
Ey dude, nice review and mod. But I can not say that my Big Bad wah so far has not had any problems, I do not make any kind of noise and sounds really good. Obviously this was not the case. But good video man. cheers!
you should have ditched that PCB and wired directly to wear the white wires go to
I actually have a crybaby from Dunlop and I get that same scratchy sound. I also get a really uneven sweep, it jumps and almost completely skips the midrange frequencies. any recommendations?
The riffs he plays are so in agreement with the state of the pedal, sad with the old pot and happy with the new one
i bought a dime crybaby from hell and i have the same problem with the scratchy noise, if i install a dunlop hot pot will it steal some tone from the wah?
I Like the effect This pedal gets myself although I never had one. However from what I hear recorded It seems to have that little extra extra. By the way I bought 3 new I Car pots and out of 3 1 was bad. I don't think they make that HP II anymore but I had one in one of my other pedals ( King Vox Wah ) Still plugging away. I'm wondering if they use both inductors in series at any point. AnyWho Enjoyed your Video.c];-)
hey i see this video, but i have some fear to do this operation...
hahaha was that the simpsons theme song i heard at the end?
hi, got this pb in 2 weaks of intensive use of my new wahwah.
does your wah moded works great after 2 month of use?
the pb is that if the noise comes back with the new hot potz 2, the garanty is out :(
i ordered the same hot potz 2 as you, and i am lazy to get another bigbadwah in replacemement to get the same pb in 2 weaks.
you talk about a 450K pots (instead of 100k), what will be the result? sound just more "hendrix"?
(seen your post on vox forum, this board really suck)
dude that was awesome
A Morely Vai Wah has no moving parts, all pot wahs will degrade in time. Vox must be using really crap parts. Fulltone makes or obtains some really high quality low wear pots, they used to sell them but they often keep them for their wahs which are probably the best pot wahs to be had.
Hello everyone, I bought this wonderful used pedal but it doesn't work. It lights up, but no effect works, nothing. Can anyone help me? thank you in advance.
damn haha so you're warning me that the big bad wah it's gonna get wacked in few days right? so if i buy this pedal i buy the hot potz II and i wont have any problems, thanx a lot (Y) cool vid 2 (Y)
Most pot wahs are NOT true bypass and they will suck tone when off. Morely Vai Wah is way ahead and its signal buffer system will actually improve your tone and line run, NO moving parts to wear out and the contour wah can be adjusted for any different Q or volume level. It has the instant on and off switching with no click switch or pop.
So far I am not impressed by the JS-VOX stuff. Took the TimeMachine back, it is not line level for loops, now the Wahs suck, Dist has a weird hi-overtone
Change the potentiometer ... spray didn't fix mine :(
I feel sad for you, zakk wylde pedal is the best, no extra setting, just plug in turn it on and have a WILD wah time...plus it's cheaper than other signature wah wahs..
who's moning in the backround??
Joe uses a Big bad wah. He doesn't seem to have the problem. Great review though.
Hi Patricio! I send you a message here, hope you can help me =)
ps: I agree.. the quality of VOX's pieces is quite bad!
so does joe not care? did he not notice? I doubt he'd let a problem like this exist on a product with his name on it.
HOLA EL VOX BIG BAD WAH ES TRUE BY PASS?
I've got the exactly same problem I would like to know if you have heard a huge difference of sound between the two potentiometer ? Thx for answer man.
You have a Quebec tone..lol Thanks for the review..I was going to buy one.
But this has nothing to do with the seller ...
i think crybaby from hell comes with hot pot 2...
haha 0 and 2 out of five tht made my day lol
my Parrot :D
