I only lasted four days working for a former British socialite now living in the United States who thinks she's more important than she really is. She had me doing at least 15 jobs at once. Nothing I did could get 100% completed. She keep putting me on the next task and then the next task. Neurotic, BIPOLAR, other mental illnesses, home all day..no purpose in life but to harass the help. Unbelievably great pay! I wish I could have lasted more than 4 days but I couldn't do it and I've been a housekeeper, household manager, professional nanny and nurse's aide. I can put up with a lot but she broke me. She had told me she never had anyone quit working for her. I find that VERY hard to believe.

I think Carinas problem is that she wants her employee to do EVERYTHING under the sun without clearly defined responsibilities which is a perfect scene for chaos and unnecessary stress. I think it will be a lot easier for her if she had more clear defined responsibilities and maybe dived the indoor and outdoor responsibilities between 2 individuals.

So true and you often find this in family businesses. I once worked with a family and was expected to do everything (including mind reading!) all at once! I enjoyed the variety of tasks, less so the pressure to be perfect (which was not a requirement of any family member!). I lasted a lot longer than many before and after me did and it actually won me a job afterwards because I had outlasted someone's partner who had my job before me!! All minimum wage, of course 😁 x

The smartest thing to do would put a person in charge of the business end of things with C overseeing that and C does the crap she wants the other person to do. The truth is she doesn't want to do those things and would prefer shutting herself in her " office" and letting someone else do the heavy lifting and child care. I've done all these things and office work, even if you have to deal with unhappy customers is a long way better than having to take care of another person's house, children, horses and any and everything else with which the lady of the house doesn't want to bother (except it better be perfectly done.) By the way, this is a pet peeve of mine, sine when do adults have to entertain children? Children are perfectly capable of entertaining themselves.

There's something so comically hopeless but sweet about the bumbling Detmar Blow. His book was a catalogue of shameless name dropping while bleating about how poor he and Isabella were, while simultaneously buying and refurbishing an apartment in Mayfair and living completely outside their means. There seemed to be little to no substance to their lives apart from their preoccupation with appearances and poses.

You can search for the perfect employee but sometimes the best candidate is one who will stay on the job, as Carina has hopefully learned. You cannot expect someone to be a copy of yourself. No one is going to have the same energetic drive to pitch in at such widely varied tasks as Carina demands. She needs to pick one area she can best manage to surrender to a stranger and be happy with the relief she will find there. The first girl that she hired expected that she would be sitting down to do a little office work and then jumping up to do some active work. To surprise her with such a drastic change on the first day without asking her if she was comfortable with the change was unacceptable and showed a surprising lack of empathy for her employees. Unsurprisingly, her choice did not work out well for her.

  • @Damremont18
    @Damremont18 6 лет назад +29

People need a job description and a rough timetable. Just saying you want a little of this and a little of that is not good enough. Once you've assigned the principal duties, you can throw in "other duties as assigned.", if you have occasional random duties. People who are expected to read their employers minds and who have nebulous duties are rudderless and it quickly leads to loss of focus and dissatisfaction for both parties. It all comes back to the employer and clear expectations. In this regard Lady Linlithgow was head and heels above the others. The gentleman was plain hopeless.

I was just over at New York Magazine, reading-up on Detmar Blow. Apparently, his mother is a real rotter. Isabella fixed up the house really well with her audacious great taste, and created such a tempting ambience, with celeb guests, fabulous decor, fabulous food, and great music, that Mummy decided she wanted the house for herself - booting Detmar and Isabella, ostensibly because they could not produce heirs - but mostly because Mummy thought she could have the decor/ambience/guests, even though she'd exiled the person who created it all. Poor Issy! No WONDER she killed herself.

By the way, one should not have to put one's "back into it" when ironing. The weight of the iron combined with the heat does the work. If one is putting one's "back into it," one is likely using the wrong temperature for the garment. I would have loved it if one of her "new-hires" had known that and informed her of it. If she irons socks, I suppose under garments are ironed as well.

Look I don’t personally hunt, because I’m to “tender of heart” as my father says, but I come from a sporting family (Scottish and Welsh), and hunting is vital and important to help maintain the populations and ensure healthy herds and land. As long as it’s not just hunting to kill, but the game is eaten, and it’s done responsibly and legally (poaching and greed killing is HORRIFIC and GHASTLY especially of elephants and endangered animals) there is nothing wrong with hunting and it’s actually a vital part of maintaining the land. You don’t personally have to do it to understand why others do. Anyone who knows anything at all about conservationism knows hunting is part of that.

She will never keep staff as she is so controlling. Really she would do better to do her own office work and hire a cleaner for the house ( and let her get on with it instead of insisting on micromanaging every task) and someone to look after the horses and the children during school holidays and after school. Each person needs to have their specific role and Carina needs to let them get on with it instead of interfering. About Detmar. Detmar Blow was married to Isabella Blow, (1958-2007, born Isabella Delves Broughton), the fashion stylist and icon and muse of hat designer Philip Treacy making his hats a signature part of her flamboyant style. She discovered many talents such as Alexander McQueen. She was the fashion director of Tatler and consulted for DuPont Lycra, Lacoste, and Swarovski. She became the subject of an exhibition in 2002 titled "When Philip met Isabella", which featured sketches and photographs of her wearing Treacy's hat designs. Isabella was probably bi-polar and very eccentric, sometimes outrageous. She committed suicide when she was 48 by drinking weed poison as did her estranged husband's father decades earlier. She had blue blood in her veins. She had a rather sad childhood. Detmar is descibed as "socialite" Detmar Blow. Detmar wrote a book about her, it has been criticised. "I will love Isabella till the day I die. And that was a thing we had together, we fell in love on the first night and we knew it, and i think we also knew that we were doomed as well." Detmar Blow. Google her, she is worth reading about.

The pernicious ignorant comments here are far worse than any of the characters in this fascinating series!!
The people running these houses are doing their very best to keep, them going and make them pay. They are businesses, not charities.
Not everyone is equipped to run a business, and in some of these cases these people aren't up to the task. They have simply inherited something which in reality is a huge burden. And for which they is not always a happy ending. Try running your own business for which you may not be best suited. It's not easy.
And having worked in large corporations many of the people at the top of the heap, are no different to these characters!! And they draw a monthly salary, irrespective of how well they do. The people running these large houses, have to make them pay and measure their success every day. Few of us have to do that.

Some sort of enterprise . Mining, tradin, serving in war.etc . It’s not hard to build it. It hard to keep it. I think the inheritance tax is what makes them struggle these days. Every time it wealth is passed on it might be nearly halved if you do not pass it on in some clever way. If you inherit an estate worth let’s say10mil. You will pay 40% tax on it. That 4 mil that you have to cash out to the government to keep your estate. And 4 mil is years worth of salaries for staff and bills for upkeep. Next time around - you still have estate worth 10 mil but less cash to pay your 4 mil tax bill. Very few estates can afford the fat tax bill without selling part of the land if not all. The estates are high value , high maintenance and they can turn just enough profit to keep them going at best. Most do not have millions lying around in case someone dies. Wealth is gradually stripped away from them . Country life isn’t a money spinner these days.

Those who come from privileged backgrounds and are not themselves fabulously wealthy will almost always have difficulty recruiting and keeping a competent labor force on hand to maintain a stately house and the surrounding estate. Better to downsize and learn to do things for yourself if you cannot afford to hire competent labor to maintain that estate and country house. The proceeds from the sale of a large estate could buy a decent two bedroom flat and still have enough leftover to pay for years of weekly housekeeping and a lifetime of frozen microwaveable meals. That would be much better that living in the squalor of leaking roofs and rising damp of an unheated and poorly maintained stately house that is falling apart.

Good gravy I was interested in Detmar Blow and the passing of his wife. I looked it up and he wrote a book about it all called Blow by Blow. Something is off here. I think he has not come to terms or won't admit he loves the man that lives on his property. However the poor wife. Who drinks weedkiller to commit undead. He is a strange creepy and odd little man.

That lady named Kara, reminded me of Emily Blunt 25:45.
