Crazy thing is that was written possibly in the 70s....79 perhaps...mindboggling, I have been listening to it for 40+ years......did my poetry assignment for high school English class with "spirit of the radio".....Teacher thought I was a genius, I was just a high high school kid listening to Rush.
Rush has been known to be music for nerds. There’s a movie clip somewhere the Rush guys are walking backstage after a stadium show and Geddy is telling Neil ‘no, I swear I saw one!’ Neil says ‘no way.’ geddy ‘no really, third row back on the left!’ Neil ‘And people say women never come to our shows! Ha!’ 😂
Early on that was the case but I did notice in their later years and since that there are more women. One of the main Rush fan clubs is run by women right?
Nerdy tech fact here. On this song Neil was using a special recording device that only captured the hit of the sticks on the drums and cymbals and not the resonance of the drums, giving the drums a unique crisp sound
It might not be Rush's biggest hit but it's still great. It's technical music but it's still catchy.with smart lyrics. I like the haunting feel at the end
Another great song by my favourite band! ❤❤❤ Other Songs to check out Analog Kid from 1994 Auburn Hills (2018 remaster from Stickhits) Digital Man from the Snakes and Arrows tour Driven live in Rio Cheers 🇨🇦
Three Groups who cared about people. r-US-h about life (Rush song Vital Signs). Ozzy about War and Loving (Crazy Train). Alice Cooper being an evil guy like an actor on TV. Who don't mind playing the bad guy if it shocks you to thinking. (Fresh Blood). These people write a lot about Caring about life. They have tons of songs to make people think of life back in the day and still have meaning today... Thanks for being open minded and caring.
Rush 2nd -3rd Album . Record Company (I don't get) . Critics (Go away) . Record Company (Last Chance to Conform) . Response (Rush song Anthem) . 4th Album (2112 and freedom) . Fans Response Give Us more... Hold your head above the Crowd and make your dreams come true and forget the Critics. Rush 101 about life.
I'm old enough to remember the album 2112. Give it a listen. Please. One side is all about the future. And as always best drums I've ever heard, I'm 52 years old now.
I think this is one of the most inventive Rush songs. Definitely a reggae feel. The bass work by Geddy is one of the highlights of his work, and I also think the Neil Peart drumming during the long fade-out is some if his best work. A great Rush tune. Thanks for reacting to it.
A HUGE R.I.PERCUSSION PARADISE TO THE GREAT, LEGENDARY, MUSICAL GIANT ( NEIL P / EAR / T ) 😵 REMEMBER HE WROTE THE LYRICS ALSO FOR THE BAND BIZZZ, JUST SIMPLY AMAZINGGGG MY FRIEND!😊 40 YEARS FOR THE 3 MUSICAL MAESTROS
Great reaction Biz! Everyone knows how incredible Neil Peart was as a drummer (still can't come to terms with WAS!) but he was as good a lyricist as a drummer - absolutely fabulous! A real deep thinker with messages for us all to contemplate. The word genius is overused, but fits Neil perfectly.
Pro Tip: Even advanced ears need to listen to unfamiliar advanced music several times. Over a period of days. Longer ideas take longer to become familiar. But they DO become familiar. Try it out 😺
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure…becomes…an ounce of perception, a pound of obscure….😜. Neil loved his wordplay and we are all better for it.
My interpretation of this most eloquent lyric is that it's about adolescence or teenage angst. Yeah you feel different, take some advice but learn to seperate the good from the bad. No bullshitting no conditions just courageous convictions...'everybody 's' got to elevate from the norm ? Not possible. As ever with their songs, they're talking to you, in the room.
Sci-fi reggae vibe is the perfect description. Rush was definitely being influenced by The Police at this point in the early 80's. I think you've done every song from this album except two. Witch Hunt and Camera Eye. Both underrated gems
You definitely are a smart guy, can tell by your breakdown of Neil's lyrics. He was an incredibly cerebral man, so well read. I watched an interview when this album came out and he asked Neil if he was comparing humans to robots, exactly what you said. Neil said he didn't mean to do that.
And, of course, Neil used to say that he was very happy to hear how his listeners interpreted his lyrics, understanding that - once he had put them out in the world - they were for the world’s use.
If you'd like to see an amazing performance, featuring another song that combines that reggae vibe with lyrics that are as relevant today as when Neil wrote them, I recommend Distant Early Warning from Live In Rio. Cheers from Canada! 🇨🇦 🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🔥 🔥 🔥

Love your point of view and reaction. Been listening to Rush since 1977 & they are to smart for me still in 2023. Totally A Reggae Vibe !

First Rush experience - December 5, 1982 Signals tour at the Providence Civic Center with Rory Gallagher opening up... $11.00 for the ticket
Every song oN RUSH'S first 7 albums is PERFECT! FACTS!

Yeah, he was wearing some kind of mic in the video for this. That bass drum really booms at the beginning though.
love this one,. Thanks for a great reaction

Try Analog Kid from the next album after the one on which this song appeared, Signals.

This and Witch Hunt have been my 2 favorite songs from this album for the last 25 or 30 years
Neal really liked Stewart Copeland's drum playing ( The Police), which had that reggae feel. Greatest 3 piece band of all time. RIP Neal Peart.🙏
Great song, great outro. Saw them live the first time in support of this album. Great band.
I second the outro! 👍

Yep, the reggae influence is from The Police 😁
You said it right. Geddy Lee. There's a little story behind why it's 'Geddy'.
Best reaction ever Biz!!! Nailed it to the core, an that’s what rush nuts get with every song brother 🤘🔥 your reactions are always 🔥
Thank you

I prefer these deep kind of lyrics as well as Witch Hunt, Subdivisions, Mystic Rhythms - much more than the Sci-Fi stuff like By-Tor and Cygnus

I always like this song but listening closely with you reminds me how damn good these guys were. Geesh
SciFi Reggae I love it

I love this song! Even though there are no leads, which is unusual for Alex, he makes up for it with an incredible guitar track! Great reaction!
Yo biz. Anotha one. This whole album is a great listen on head phones. Seen this tour. 👊

Next rush song you should check out is Jacobs ladder

❤
I’d love to hear a rap artist reinvent/remix this song. It feels like it’s inviting interpretation? Rush has always been a fan of every genre.
Do 2112 or camera or anthem so many great songs to choose from! Please keep going down the Rush path!
