Dang I want this, my favorite Dash 9-40c, besides the Dash8-40c. Great review!
Great review. Interesting to see features like rotating bearing caps, ground light, walkway light etc. in Athearn locomotives. Actually, kudos to ScaleTrains for waking up other manufacturers who were in deep slumber for decades.
Great review! This will be my 1st purchase of 2022. Thanks for your time.
Glad I could help!
Big dawg Athearn taking the fight to the new companies! I covet ALL of the Genesis models I have. Kick ass review guy!
Thanks man!! Athearn has definitely stepped it up!
Mine came today and I'm really impressed. Soundtraxx sounds seem much improved to me. I thought the ground lights were a bit dim so I increased the brightness and they look much better.
Awesome! It's funny you mention the soundtraxx sound, I thought it sounded improved to me as well.
Well done DG! You know what your talking about and you use the correct terminology. You're one of the best!
I really appreciate the positive feedback. Thank you very much!
Your best video to date. Looks very professional. You can walk away from this video knowing what your buying. You have done the modeling community a great service. Thank you.
Thank you very much! I really appreciate hearing that. 🙂
Excellent review. Really like some the improvements. The linking system to body is awesome !!!!
Thanks! Yeah this is a sweet loco!
You’ve gotta be the first to put up a vid on these! Well done! I’m already heavily invested in Scale Trains Dash 9s, but if Athearn makes one I have to have, I’ll be picking it up! Also the sound is better than I thought it might be!
the Tsunami2 will allow variation in lashup engine sounds so the locos in your consist won't all sound the same. Appears like ATH took notes from ST when they did the pin connectors instead of the wires to the shell, haha
Thanks! I'm very impressed with this model.
Thank you for the review! That lighting plug system you showed at the end is very cool. I also hope they keep that in future releases.
Thanks I hope so too!
That was a FANTASTIC, review. Thank you !!
Thank you!!
I am a huge Athearn fan they look amazing sound wonderful my only complaint is the plastic couplers. but it's not a big problem because it's easy to replace them with metal semi scale couplers. another great review.
Real glad to see one of the very first videos of this highly anticipated Athearn release. The big question is how does Athearn's version directly compared to the already established ScaleTrains rendition that has been out for 2 years already, which I am most eager to know about
Thank you very much for watching. I don't have a ST one to directly compare, but I am VERY impressed with this model.
@@DGModelworks Might not be a bad idea to pick up ST’s upcoming tophats for a direct comparison, which iirc are due next year
WOW!
I'm very impressed with these models, especially the Tsunami 2 sound in these it sounds amazing. I been waiting for a review for these. You really do a great job on these review videos.
Thanks! And I had the same impression as you. WOW! What a sweet loco!
Awesome review Athen did do a great job at it the details amazing and I like how they Incorporated the step lights
Thanks Joe! It is definitely an awesome loco!
Awesome 👏 I am new to the hobby and I want to model the B&P which I catch but no one has made any engines in the paint
I like the fact that now you can see through the rear grill detail work some! I would like to see a comparison between this and SXT's version of their Dash 9s.
Yeah Athearn really released a nicely detailed loco with these.
Those lighting pins are also found in the Genesis 2.0 SD60M Triclops. Just make sure no wires interfere with them and that they have good connection
Ah OK. I reviewed that model but never removed the shell on that one. Good to know.
Those “pogo” connectors can also be found on various bowser products and all of scale trains products including the operator series. Great video.
Thanks! Yeah It appears Athearn has made the switch to them, at least in the Genesis 2.0 line.
Great review, Deryk! That wiring connection is really great. Must be brand new as I have a couple Genesis 2 AC4400's and the wiring is still the "old way" on those locos. I'd say Athearn has really stepped up their game. - Brian
Thanks Brian! I think this is something they have started with the New Genesis 2.0 line. This is the 2nd loco they've done it with. I didn't think Athearn did the AC4400's in Genesis yet. Only RTR in the past.
Love that NS dash 9 locomotive. My favorite
Great video. They are great runners and sound super. I have a BC rail one.
Those BC Rail ones look freaking awesome!
Thank you for the cv numbers for the prime mover. And HAPPY HOLIDAYS
You are welcome! Thanks and same to you and yours!
Another great review. I was just looking my UP units over when I got the notification of a new video. I have to agree with your assessment. Would like to see what what speed you obtain if you put the loco in yard swtcher mode function 14. Great motor control out of the box.
Sweet! So you like your UP units as well?
Nice review. Great detail.
Thanks! This is a pretty sweet loco!
I can't wait get hands on the union pacifc units they look awesome
I think you will like it!
Wow..freakin awesome engine..put that one on my list.. thanks for sharing and keep up the great work..Lance
I think you would love it!
Great review and awesome locomotive . I would change it to a loksound 4.0, though. That tsunami sound doesn't have the chug sound of a GE 7FDL16. It sounds like a emd sound in a GE loco.
I DO like Loksound!
Great detailed review.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it
great review fantastic locomotive!
Thank you very much!
It was a long time coming but ST and Athearn got a hit. Will NS get the SD70ace T4 like UP and CSX? A model would be nice.
I agree!!
Ur rite it does sound awesome, ur doing great reviews thx
Thank you!
Great review really nice loco 😀👍
Many thanks!
Nice review, kinda makes me want to look for one.
Thank you!
Impressionnant bravo j'adore ces locomotives merci.
👌😃👍
Athearn have upped their game yet again. Model of the hear for 2021? A very good locomotive. Pity you didn't demonstrate the dynamic brake sound.
This is probably their best model yet! Thanks for the feedback, I'll try to remember that for the next vid.
Looks and sounds great
Awesome review!! Just curious how big is your layout room size vs main line length asking because 36 cars has to be around 30 feet long and it looked proportioned nicely to your layout. Thanks in advance for the info, I’m an ex switchman/RCO and later in career a Trainmaster for the belt railway company of Chicago and my biggest issue designing a layout is realistic train size vs available room size.
Thanks very much! Sounds like you have some real life experience with realistic trains. My Layout is roughly 17' x 16' with a mainline run of 75'
Woops I saw you already answered that question.
Do you like it better than the Scale trains one?
Hi bro, i just wanted to know if you can tell me what cv number is that for the prime mover sound i like the sound of that prime mover THANK YOU
Hello....That is a value of 2 for CV123
My Athearn Genesis GEVO 44s in UP sound like that numbers 5503 and 5519
Their genesis SDFP40 had those pins, problem was they are for TSU, if you install loksound all the lighting functions are wrong :(
Will definitely require some programming if installing Loksound. Very beneficial to have the Lokprogrammer if going that route.
Dual sugar cube speakers really make the difference
Heck yeah it does!
HELLO DECKY ITS IS RANDY AND I LIKE U VIDEO IS COOL AND I LIKE THE NEW ATHEARN GENESIS 2.0 DASH 9-40C -WITH TSUNAMI 2! COOL DEVKY RANDY
I truly wish someone would do the - 9 in the operation lifesaver Norfolk Southern. I'm not talking about that blue box one with wrong light configuration. But one that is actually correct.
MTH did one a few years back..... It's the wide cab version. #9250 I have never even had it out of the box yet. It's a DCC ready version, and its on my 'to do' list for loco projects.
@@DGModelworks It is only the wide cab ones but Athearn did one a while ago but it used the nose headlight instead of above the cab.
Yeah, That was a RTR one with some incorrect things like the headlight placement. But the MTH one is correct. All I need to do is add a decoder and speakers.
BTW, if that's your Roush in your pic, LOVE IT! I am on my 4th Mustang, currently a 2017 GT
Yes that was my 2008 428R. I traded that in for a 2015 RS3 in magnetic metallic. Unfortunately Roush doesn't polish the blowers anymore so that's why I keep the photo.. but I do love my S550.
The walk way lights got brighter also
Ah yes!
That looked like a really nice show but the main question is did you leave there empty-handed or did you purchase something inquiring minds would like to know 🤔
I'm not sure what you mean. Did you comment on the wrong video?
Yes I can see that model is extremely good.. I have thr BC Rail version of the same model . I did however manage to screw up a few parts ad I found out that the exploded parts catalogue that they provided with ehw model is very great, but try and order the parts form it and you'll have a humungous disapointment in finding out that there is no support for this, makes me think twice if I will buy another athearn product again. Very pissed off about this, Sooo good luck
Is it better than scaletrains, or just more available?
I never had the SXT version to compare. But this thing is very impressive!
Are you running nce power cab are something else
Yes, NCE Powercab
@@DGModelworks ok thanks , I ordered me one of those locomotive , can you tell me any cvs I need to change are just leave it as is
Awesome! You should be fine right out of the box.
This locomotive seems to be listed as out of production on Athearn's site. How long ago was it ordered?
These things were all preordered by hobby shops. You will have to find the NS ones at a hobby shop. Search around online or in person at your local shop.
@@DGModelworks Okay. Thank you.
@@DGModelworks Hey Hey, I found a hobby store outside of Pittsburgh, PA near my home, that had 10 of these models in stock at the time of my purchase. I got #8855 with sound, for $174.94. Don't know if that was good or bad on the price, but I am happy.
WOW! How did you find one at that price? That's cheaper than the non sound ones.
@@DGModelworks I don't know, That is what the price tag was listed at, and they had (9) more in stock.
And that really sounds like a D9, I scaletrains is ok, but I will always be loyal to athearn over everyone, I would take tsunami or TCS anyway over ESU
That's awesome! Glad you like it!
Very nice model, but I’d have to side with STX on this one. I have two STX top hats and they are wonders for me. Esu makes it much better IMO
I imagine they are both very good models. I didn't get a SXT one.
You know it's more apparently becoming frustrate there's a lot of these new manufacturers are trying to make their handrails so prototypically to the thickness that they're actually making it worse. I can't even suggest how many engines of bought lately including scaletrains that I have to repair the railings for the price of these engines there should be no need of any type of repair like that. You know MTH did a good job intermountain seems to have a sturdy railings but some of these other companies have just got to get their act together and make a better railing instead of one that's so prototypical I'd much rather have a railing that's held on together then havet me glue it all the time for it to stay on. Trust me to the manufacturers nobody's really going to mind if the handrail that is just slight thicker as long as it stays straight and on..
Handrails are a touchy subject among modelers, and are certainly the most delicate part of the locomotive. It's something manufacturers really struggle with. They are damned if they do, and damned if they don't; and we(the modelers) are to blame for that. In this current age, the modeler has been spoiled by the level of detail locos now have, and the majority of modelers want everything prototypical. It amazes me sometimes what some people complain about when they get a model, because something isn't 100% prototypical. So back to my point....manufacturers are trying to please those modelers while also attempting to make the handrails durable. MTH are certainly durable, but somewhat oversized, and IM are the only handrails I've ever broke. Either way....I think it's an impossible thing to perfect. It all comes down to, "do you want durable or prototypical?" It's really one of those Chevy vs. Ford debates. I've noticed there are a lot of those debates in this hobby.
@@DGModelworks I do completely understand what you're talking about. But Ford will always be better than Chevy. 😉
You know it!! hahaha
"SEXY GE SOUND"
Everything is dynamite. I hope I can get one.
I hope you can too, these things are selling quick.
Nothing new with the spring lighting mth used on all their o gauge trains since 1994
If you listened to me, I said it was new for Athearn. I realize it isn't a new thing.
Nice looking engine until you started it up. Ugh! Tsunami is way past their time and Athearn should drop them and move into the 21st century. I just watched your Scaletrains Dash 9 video and WOW Night and day difference in sound.
Tsunami 2 is actually a really amazing decoder. Not sure what you mean by way past their time. Athearn has no plans to drop Soundtraxx from the models any time soon.
Each brand of decoder definitely have their own fans for sure. It's like the Chevy vs Ford debate. haha
@@DGModelworks Definitely lol
