A very happy birthday to you Martin .. may god bless you always and grant you many healthy and happy years ahead ! Great stories as always of the better life gone by ! Tatenda sekuru 🙏🏻
I’m 46, but I wish I’d been born earlier. It seems like a much freer and less homogeneous world. My favourite times were definitely pre-internet. Perhaps ignorance is bliss!
My first bike was a BSA 250 single cylinder. Bought for 15 pounds. Unfortunately the guy that reconditioned the engine made a mistake with the dimensions of the cylinder and rings, so if you revved the bike to overtake someone the engine would seize and you came to a slithering and embarrassing halt. Swapped it with a young friend for his 500cc ex army dispatcher riders bike. BSA. One coil spring at the front, nothing at the back. Always had to remember to retard the spark when kick staring otherwise one went into orbit with a near broken leg. One day did a 300 mile trip and when I got to my destination I had to be lifted off the bike I was so cold and shook up. I just turned 81, so we are in the same age group. Well done with the stories. Keep them coming. Ex Rhodesia regiment.
Oh man would I have loved to have grown up like that! It sounds almost unbelievable compared to later years... Congratulations on your 80th birthday Sir, may you have 80 more.
Happy Birthday, Mr. Martin! Thanks for sharing the amazing history of Rhodesia, and may God give you many more years to tell more great stories! Cheers from Oklahoma [>
We had a similar experience of owning a bobo as school boys. My brother and I caught him near the Save river confluence and raised him at home in Gwelo until simply became too big and potentially dangerous so we gifted him to Ozzie Bristow who at that stage had a lion and cheetah park near Fort Vic if my memory serves, where he became the leader of Ozzie's bobos and apparently starred in Jamie Uys's movie " Beautiful people". Interesting times!! Wonderful times!!
DANG! You look FANTASTIC, for "Three-score-and-twenty". Happy Birthday to you, Sir. You put a smile on my face, Sir. Thank you for this glimpse. Thanks for taking us along on your drive.
"OH my! Martin!?. Sorry, sir, but for the whole time that I've watched, you!. You haven't never one's said your name till now!?.. Thank you, Martin, for sharing!...👏
:) Geez Mart. We might have nearly been neighbours! Was nice to see those jakaranda trees again. The avenue I stayed on in didn't have quite that same amount bloom, but the bees still had a great time.
Happy birthday! Thank you for such a wonderful story, I'm 29 and I'm already feeling some of these wistful pangs myself, it was wonderful to hear yours and I hope you do get to catch a glance or buy one of those bikes again. Every time you upload it's a joyous experience, you're a treasure and I hope we get many more stories about your life!
And all these years you thought that the only birthday present you received that year was the bone shaker. But you received confirmation that The Living God hears your prayers and that He cares for you and is interested in what is happening in your life. God bless you all the more.
Ha! Hello again Martin and "Penn bloodh Lowen!". I say, "Ha!" because less than three hours ago the post-lady delivered a parcel to me. A book. Selous Scouts. A Top Secret War. R R Daly- P Shiff. It came via Booths Books of Hay-on-Wye. It was part of a collection belonging to a former trooper from the old Stirling Lines, now sadly passed. I shall wait until Winter sets in to commence reading it. It was only on sale for one hour and I received a 'heads-up'. I reacted with great alacricity for a rather battered 65 years old old bugger. You know😉 That book and your latest video installment has made my day. "Rumble on". God bless.
Martin every time you tell a story I realize a parallel. Your excelsior, my 1989 Mustang. Your Bobo, my dog Flash. There will never be anything that will ever compare to those. Even though I moved away from my home and now reside in an area not all that far away I will still maintain that my freest moments were in West Virginia as a young boy and then again as a teen/young adult. I don't regret leaving, I only regret not going back more often. Stay safe and God Bless!
Martin!!! My goodness what an amazing suprise! Ive been knee deep in your Rhodesian History playlist. You sir are a true class act. Thank you so much for all you do and share. Everytime i take my Triumph Speed Twin out for a ride i think of you, friend.
Jeez ya man my family are from Lochinvar as well, I grew up in Acacia ave, then later we moved to Baobab road, and then from there to Waterfalls, yes man Lochinvar club was the main hang out, and of course went to Warren hills alot
Great to hear from you. A novel method of delivery as well. Sincerely hope to measure up to your physical and mental condition in 19 years time when I also reach 'three score and twenty' Only spent a year in Rhodesia as a borderer, St Michael's Prep, Salisbury. It had a big impact on a geordie lad whose previous horizons were not much further than a coal mine on the north east coast of England.
You tell the best stories! ❤ I’ve learned to be very careful asking the Lord for motorcycles, he might give you way more than you asked for. 😊 I spent my lifetime fixing things but I can’t fix myself now. 😂🤷♂️🙏🏻
Your ability to tell stories is phenomenal. The physical and emotional descriptions you provide allow me to envision a time and place I've never been but seem to relate to anyway. The memories of a man in his old age Are the deeds of a man in his prime.... Please continue to share your memories with us.
Welcome back, always a nice treat to have a vid from you. I know EXACTLY how you felt that first time on the bone shaker. I'd always wanted a motorbike but my parents were against it, after my dad had a bad crash on his - and he switched to cars. When I left home I worked like a slave and saved up to buy an AR125 Kawasaki.....well the first time I rode it was my first time riding a motorbike - and it seemed to me that I was flying, what a rush - 125cc of pure joy. The feeling has stayed with me for 30+ years.
Hey Martin, I thought you were an Old Hararian from some comments you have made in the past..... Tot Facienda Parum Factum, for sure! And I remember that gravel road between the two schools as well as Lamont.... Memories! Hope you had a most enjoyable birthday!
The air rifle and dove bit was interesting. As a kid in southern England I used to do that, and lighting fires to cook stuff. Moved to NZ. Today if a kid did that here, 20 police armed offenders would turn up, with the media, and you'd be in the headlines. Rural fire brigade would also be there, wanting to see your fire permit. SPCA would have you for animal cruelty, and some nut from the Greens would be kicking up because you'd shot an endangered creature. The world has gone backwards.
I assume you are ex Prince Edward. If so We must have been there at the same time as I too have passed the magic 80. What a shame I can't remember you. I wish you all the best from a very cold Tasmania.
Hi sir I remember the dikwiel bikes with the engines on them as a laaitie
Happy Birthday Sir...
A very happy birthday to you Martin .. may god bless you always and grant you many healthy and happy years ahead ! Great stories as always of the better life gone by ! Tatenda sekuru 🙏🏻
I'm only 75 but I often think my childhood was the best time of our world, but then young people always think that
… but in your case Sir, you’re right! It was the best time of our world.
I’m 46, but I wish I’d been born earlier. It seems like a much freer and less homogeneous world. My favourite times were definitely pre-internet. Perhaps ignorance is bliss!
Happy Birthday Martin and what a wonderful story. That's the sort of life a young lad should enjoy when growing up, marvellous.
