She's right...there is nothing better than an early morning walk around the flower gardens with my coffee and my collies every day. We're working on their gardening skills, but the dogs are especially adept at pruning. 😉. Now if I could only teach them to deadhead. A lovely video...Ms. Roehm, you have inspired me with those dahlias! Wow!
This might be one of my favorite episodes...what she said at the and of waking up and grabbing a cup of coffee, gathering the dogs and heading out to the garden is sublime....absolutely perfect way to start a day. I would love to see it firsthand in the winter.

I was having a Beatrix Potter moment just as she said they were ready for the bunnies lol. I'm taking everything I've learned from her and applying it to my garden in France... THIS is how a garden should be. Photo perfect but lived in and used.

Watched this episode several months ago - along with a binge of all the other fantastic stories - in the dead of a Canadian winter. I was grateful for a much needed escape! Thank you! Interestingly, this past weekend I finished planting on my terrace, came across Carolynne's story again and realized that so many of my gardening design choices I had absorbed almost subconsciously from the first viewing! That's what I love about Quintessence: a window into people, places and ideas that creatively and profoundly influences us all. Heading to France this summer again and know that I will be thinking of your time with Timothy Corrigan in the markets and at his chateau! SUMMER NOTEBOOK BY this lady I hold on to this book for years now and do my watercolour flowers from here so I admire her life from india
Claude Monet, once he had the funds to buy his property in Giverny, branched out from his former garden puttering to building ponds, bridges, flowers beds and had several full time gardeners \to create his LIVING masterpieces. Then he painted his gorgeous waterlily series donated to the people of France upon his death which you can see in Paris. He painted many, many scenes from his garden all beautiful and spent the latter part of his life just studying the effect of light on his garden creations them painting them and LOOK at his body of work! I am dedicating my retirement to doing the same on a tiny tiny scale in the tropics...I learned watercolor of botanicals awaiting the birth of my daughter and now have some full circle BACK to where I started.... painting, gardening in the very best of Impressionist tradition. And yes, as we age we want to simplify life and distill it down to the very best of life.
