Before Prince of Persia was a best-selling video game franchise and a Jerry Bruckheimer movie, it was an Apple II computer game created and programmed by one person, Jordan Mechner. Mechner's candid and revealing journals from the time capture his journey from his parents' basement to the forefront of the fast-growing 1980s video game industry... and the creative, technical and personal struggles that brought the prince into being and ultimately into the homes of millions of people worldwide.
Now, Stripe Press celebrates Prince of Persia's 30th anniversary and enduring legacy with a hardcover collector's edition, annotated and lavishly illustrated with archival visuals illustrating stages of the game's creation. - Игры
It's unbelievable how much impact this game had. It spawned a ton of sequels and is now known all over the world, and it all started with this masterpiece. Pretty proud of the fact that this was the first game I've ever played. I am definitely going to enjoy the book.
Hee daar taartenhoofd
My childhood, and one of the best parry mechanics I have seen in a game to this day.
First game i ever played in my life. Still love and cherish it.
Long live the Prince.
ps: hope still remains for a Last Express prequel.
Thank you for the gem that was & always will be Prince of Persia. You've made my childhood so memorable and I hope to meet you in person one day soon, sir
That's wonderful to hear. Thank you!
@@JordanMechner I second Mr. Gala. Mr. Mechner, you stole many hours of my life and for that I'm grateful!
My acquaintance with the game was to see the prince just standing there, and I had no idea as to what the game was about, what to do, nothing. Gradually, by fiddling around, I learned that I needed a sword, could crouch, save games, saw that there was a princess awaiting, and so on. As others have said here, a masterpiece.
@@JordanMechner Is it wrong to think the Japanese versions made the game more impressive? I bet that's where you got the aesthetic idea for the Macintosh version, and the snake icon for the sequel.
Back in the early 90s Karateka and Prince of Persia were the very first videogames I've ever played. Thank you so much for so many wonderful memories Mr. Mechner.
Thank you!
@@JordanMechner Skeleton it’s so scary, when I first see him, I leave the game))
One of my childhood most endearing memories. One of the reasons that I became a computer programmer, and wanted to be an "author of games". I work with computers now for more than 10 years but didnt made my carreer doing games, even doing games in collage against the will of my teachers I was never able to take it seriously, always seeing as a hobby, something even futile instead of making money. I need to promise myself and my younger self that I will do something about it. Surely I will buy this book. Thanks, Mr Mechner for making me see that it can be possible to pursue a passion.
Thank you for everything Sir!
Mr. Mechner, thank you for your great work. I have been playing Prince of Persia for 30 years. Thank you
"Most people think time is like a river that flows swift and sure in one direction. But I have seen the face of time. And I can tell you-they are wrong. Time is an ocean in a storm"
A true masterpiece, thx for creating the best games i've ever played
Mr Mechner, you are a LEGEND. Thank you for your amazing input into the world of video games and I hope the sands of time will cover our screens again with you in charge. Meanwhile, I'm replaying the classics.
Now it would be great to make a film on this book. )
The sound track was top notch too
God, I'm speechless. Prince of Persia and Karateka are the best metaphor of the human mind's creativity at the top. The animation, the playability, the music, the story. They're masterpieces. The best nostalgia of my childhood on my 1st desktop computer back in 1991 (xt 286, monochromatic monitor, with 5 1/4 diskettes only. Not a mouse, not a hard drive and music/sounds from the speaker of the pc). It's one of the few games I recall my father playing with a lot of enthusiasm, along with pacman and tetris. Thank you for your piece of art Mr. Mechner! It's really a milestone in the history of videogames.
My childhood memory is resurrected. Thanks, Jordan. I played the game thousands of time and now I teach my kid how to play it.
Happy 30th Anniversary of Prince of Persia, Your Successful hit of game creativity since your collage days!
Those where impressive recordings that made the Prince brave enough for Dangerous Obstacles of the Dungeons!
Also its International Women's day! So the Princess gets a win for being saved for this day!
Hooray for Princess of Persia! And her friend the mouse, the game's secret real hero.
@@JordanMechner A real helpful ally when your in tight jams.
Behind the scenes footage is so cool
this was, still is and forever will be a cornerstone in video game history. thank you for this game and all that came after
The parry mechanics were awesome!!!
Thanks! As the journal narrates, it took a long road to get there. In the beginning, I thought the game wouldn't have fighting at all! :D
Thank you for making my childhood great.
Jordan Mechner has a RUclips channel💖💖💖💖💖💖. Wow that's SOOOOOO AWESOME💖💖💖💖💖💖. I M SOOOOOO THANKFUL💖💖💖💖💖💖. Thank you SOOOOOO MUCH for bringing Prince Of Persia in my life💖💖💖💖💖💖😭😭😭😭😭😭.
you made our child-hood awesome and life beautiful.
I've just pre-ordered my copy in Brazil. Eegar to read it!
It's fascinating how realistic this game is for having released in the same year as super mario bros. My arms hurt for this poor guy with how much he climbs, lol.
I played this game for the first time on a PC XT 8088 in 1991. What a blast it was and still is. Mr. Mechner, you are a legend!!! Thank you!!!
PoP was by far the most memorable gaming experience of my childhood. I'd bring my friends over and we would grind through the puzzles till one of us got it right. Then all of us would learn how to do it together. I long for the day this series is rebooted/continued. Thank you sir for the memories!
Hi Jordan! Prince of Persia is an unforgettable game for me ('96 guy), even when I first saw it in 2003. I can't express how thrilled I was to play this on my old & first P3 computer. Somehow I feel kids today should find it the same way but they're clouded by apps on devices and have no way to find stuff like this beautiful game.
I will be continuing to make young people find this stuff. Thank you for this masterpiece! :)
Prince of Persia and DOOM, two titles which accompained my entire childhood. Even today, as an adult, I sometimes play Prince of Persia, to calm down my mind. PoP is very modulatory game and that's why I love it so much.
Danke dir Jordan für dieses unfassbare geile und geniale Spiel. Ich spiele es zur zeit auf meinem 386er! 🙃 Das Spiel war ein Teil meiner Kindheit, also nochmals vielen Dank dafür!
Hey there Mr. Jordan! Please make a sequel to prince of persia 2: The shadow and the flame. The witch looking old lady at the end of pop2 seeing the prince and princess through a horoscope crystal ball gave us goose bumps and has kept us waiting for pop3. I have been waiting for the the third game for so long. Please! Dont leave us hanging! There is no game like the originals and its 2022. If any one can do it it is you. It can be 2d 3d doesnt matter just continue the original saga!
Great. I imagine how could be "Prince of Persia" nowadays, using movement and AI engine like "Assassin's Creed Chronicles: India" that looks like very similar in many things, environment, etc.
Principe of Persia a wonderful game marked my childhood, congratulations for being the talented creator of this classic game, fan of Brazil
The first video game I played, I was 3 years old. :) Because of it I began to love gaming, so thank you for making this!
Just read it now and to know the creative struggles you've had fells a different approach. I was searching for background story about SNES version, since it was the one that marked me the most when I was ten, specially sounds and music composing, which is genious work given 16-bit limitations. Seems like it was a mistery to you to, or kind off? Thank you anyway, also thank you for everyone being at your side giving so many rich ideas, specially Tomi!
Thank you. You gave me good childhood memory.
This game recently got me through an IT contract where I was just waiting on machines to arrive and scanned into inventory
I grew up with Prince of Persia. It was probably the first game I ever played on PC. Must've been around 1991, so I was 10. After that it took me seven years to find another game I actually wanted to play.
Listening to The Making of PoP audiobook now. I kept putting it off, as I was wary of raw journal entries, but I couldn't have been more wrong. This thing is like an amusement park thrill ride! Unfamiliar names and unfinished story lines pop in and out like ghostly figures in my peripheral vision, but that just adds to the sense of hurtling toward an epic climax. Part of it is the masterful reading by Yuri Lowenthal, but Jordan's content is equally good. I can't believe these are journal entries written by a twentysomething kid trying to change the world while fighting off a mountain of industry nonsense. What a story. Now I can't wait to get the Karateka book. I experienced PoP much later (no Atari 8-bit version?!), but Karateka was the one that made me think I'd somehow acquired a 5¼" disk from the future.
Still play this at least once a year. Is the book the same journal that was released a few years back?
It's the same text, but a new illustrated and annotated edition.
amazing man!!! i love you
First and best game I ever played
Loved every single game, thank you so much for making our childhood so great.
Now with the new vr game coming out and the crossover in for Honor, I see the title has not been forgetting completely, hoping to see a new title for the game with great story and combat as it was always, maybe continuous to the end of the shadow and the flame, where the old lady is looking through the crystal ball :).
😂😂😂 You have no idea how many nights I played Prince of Persia, during my watch. Back in the '90ies i was doing the mandatory army service in my country. In the middle of the mountains during the winter, it was night outside and there was snow and it was too cold, my comrade-in-arms and I we didn't want to be around on guard, so we used to go to the leutenents office to take a PC, so we took it to our guard room (who knows why the leutenents had installed it in their pc :-D). We leave our riffles close to the PC and we played until dawn to the end of our shift. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thank you for that story, it makes me happy. I'm very glad that the only violence during those night shifts was on the PC!

Sir, you really are a wonderful person, is really emotional how this game was made with purely love and how much humanly it is, I hope someday to meet you, you're the most pleasant person in the world.
First game on my 286, greetings from Argentina Jordan! Excellent work!
While his game gets its fair share of credit, his RUclips channel is criminally UNDERRATED. Don't worry, Jordan-your channel will be fully appreciated in time....
You mean underrated, right? I hope?? Maybe I should post more often!
@@JordanMechner Oh, yes! Hahah! Wow, it's an honor to have you reply to me, Mr Mechner. By the way, you have one of the coolest names I've ever heard.
@@JordanMechner P.S. Have you thought of doing indie game reviews? That'd be sick!
Its so amazing!
Hey Jordan!! I am so happy to see this. I was born 1990 and my first game I had ever played was Prince of Persia 1 since then I was and am one of the biggest fans of the franchise. It influenced my life to a big degree. I am so thankful that you created this game and until this day you are my biggest hero I ever had. You created a world of thinking for me that helped me to understand myself and to have a driving factor in my life for my creativity and for my love for video games. Thank you very much. If you want you could check out my RUclips channel. The first videos I uploaded there are Prince of Persia videos (not the old ones but ubisofts games). Is it possible to write you an email somehow?
Jordan Mechner??? Who knows you? Who do you think you are? The creator of the best video game Ever? YES YOU ARE!!!! THANK YOU FOR MADE THE GAME OF MY DREAMS!!!
a video game masterpiece

Thank you #jordan :)
What a nice game! The second part is also very cool. I hope for a sequel of shadow and the flame
Sir pls give some updates about new pop game on your channel
- love from India
Wow what a great story about patience and game developing. I played when i was child. There are inspirations from thief of baghdad and some other movies. I also developer and i know game making is really a difficult work but do you have any plans about new projects?
Dear Jordan, when can we get a new Pop game? We are really looking forward to it!
Any reason why the new edition of the book is not available on Amazon UK or Amazon Germany?
I still like the animation in PoP more than the uncanny valley "canned" mocap data that most games use today.
0:49 😂 I know, I'm reading that wrong.
명작.
I wish i could be your mocaper, i'd both for karateka and prince of persia
i can't order it in switzerland :( sad
Who was the inspiration for the princess?
Hi i'm fan of Prince of Persia, where can i send you ideas for PoP6? Do you have some email or personal contact info?
Is not available in spanish :(
Sir please dont let ubisoft to design new prince of person let ..sony's studio do this..
Did you know that Assassin's Creed was meant to be a Prince of Persia game at one point?
But why did everyone leave a comment a day ago?
Aha, it's a video from the day before yesterday
This girl is beautiful, but I heard that she died. I wonder how she was.
Please ubisoft make a new Prince of persia
