My wife’s Great Uncle Corporal Sidney Karker was one of many in the 1st Bn, South Staffs who was mown down on the night of 14 July 1916 - 1st day of the Battle of the Somme - went out to rescue his badly injured C.O. and then carrying him back was shot in the head. A hero.
