It is a dark show, but it has a ton of moments that are very camp, just like how Glee does. It’s two different vibes, two different genres, and two different comedy styles. Glee is realistic fiction, whereas most of AHS deals with paranormal/sci-fi themes. You will see some writing similarities the more you watch, especially with some of the more comedic characters that you will see more and more of as the show goes on!

Life on Mars and Gods and Monsters from season 4 and Seven Wonders from season 3. Maybe the title sequence from either? No vocals on the titles but a creepy and fun time. Also there is a preview of Asylum under Dominique and one based on Freak Show called Carousel by Melanie Martinez.

'Less dark' is relative, but I'd say the impact of not wanting to upset the gravy train was immediate on the second half, and got progressively bigger past season two.

I knew him from his first series Popular which was a darkish satirical look at high school through the eyes of two stepsisters starting a new school - one is a pretty, popular cheerleader type and the other is an edgy looking outcast who is determined to turn the usual cliques on their heads and make the outcasts the most popular group in school. It was lightyears ahead of anything teen centric at the time besides Buffy, but it was canceled far too early. Ever since then he has seemed to ping-pong between various mixes of teens and horror and adults and music and crime and Broadway and Hollywood with varying degrees of success, but Glee was by far the most light hearted show he produced.
Definitely check out the songs in season 4 freakshow. Life on Mars, Gods and Monsters, and Criminal are my favorites. Stevie Nicks singing seven wonders in season 3 is great too.
There is actually a lot singing in American Horror Story. In "Freak Show" Evan Peters is singing Nirvana and Jessica Lang David Bowie and something else... Then there is Stevie Nicks in "Coven" and "Apocalypse". Evan Peters and another actress whose name I forgot are singing in "Red Tide". I don't remember if Lady Gaga was singing in "Hotel" or "Roanoke".
According to Ryan; Glee was actually more of the odd ball show for him to be writing, because he was known for more of his dark drama story telling, his big hit before Glee was Nip/Tuck. and looking through his credits glee does seem to be one of the very few bright/happy shows he's written.

It's because the producer of Glee wrote AHS. You expect producers to follow the same theme or pattern. Glee was far more lighthearted than anything else Ryan did.
The sad thing about this moment of the show…it’s really the only genuine moment of happiness in the entire series because of her character’s disorder.
Disorder? She got her brain physically damaged.
And that is why this scene makes such an impact! I love it.
