Daddy made a tank for a retiring Colonel I believe. I remember the PX, the base uphill and bingo at the NCO club where momma worked for a time. I loved our time spent in Germany and miss it. Thank you for the trip down memory lane.
I miss the blood and guts dining hall. I was stationed there 1984 thru 1987 It was the best time of my life, I used to go the K.F.C and the Henchen House right outside post. I was in Delta co 1/48th Inf Aug 1958-Feb 1960,the same time Elvis was in Friedburg. Also was in Fort Hood with him where he signed autographs and took photos. Elvis was a genuine nice person. Returned to visit Gelnhausen in the 1970 with my brother Arnold who had been stationed in Kirsh-Goens with the 3AD. What surprised me most of all is how clean the Coleman Barracks and the town on Gelnhausen remained.
The last time I was at Coleman was April of 1966. I was attached to B Company 122 Maintenance Battalion doing radio and teletype repair from 1963 to 1966. The base looks much better than when I was there, lots more landscaping! I spent a little over two years at Coleman, I enjoyed my tour of duty.

Hey. I was in Alpha 1/48. I came in the same day as Brown and Karen Willacy in the 45th in June 88. The major at division comes in the room and says " Washington, Willacy and Brown, you're going to Gelnhausen. Everybody else, congratulations you are going to the Rock!
1986-1988 HHC 1/48 Medic Platoon then in 1988 or 1989 HHC 4/18 INF Medic Platoon after the transition. We didn't have digital cameras back then, so thanks for recording this! Lots of memories in the 2.5 years I spent there! I was a medic for Mortar Platoon, Scout Platoon, Alpha & Delta CO and could smoke all the grunts on the 2-mile run!
I was stationed in Fulda, just down the road a bit from you guys. I was in the 11th ACR, Blackhorse! 1981-1983. Best time of our lives and we didn't even know it.
Thanks for video Speerhead67. I was stationed with the 709th MPs in 1976-77. Our barracks were to the right of the back gate. The alert siren was on top of our barracks. We were on the fourth floor. 503rd MPs were on the second floor. Great memories. Very much appreciated.
Was there fromm 88-91 when it went from 1/48th to 4-18th. WOW so much has changed. I was very much a different person then.. 1/48th Infantry -Blood and Guts "HIGH ANGLE HELL" 4.2 Mortar platoon HHC Dec 1987- Dec 1989. I remember 1st Sgt King G. Murray giving us our morning and COB briefings. Shout out to: S.Sgt Stafford, S.Sgt Kearns, S.Sgt Larosse, Sgt Blankenship, Sgt Link, Spc Davis, Ralph C. , Spc Culver, Spc Venus, Spc Nichols ( Nicklehead) , Spc Crossley, and so many others I had the opportunity to serve with ( please forgive me for not remembering all of your names, but I remember your faces) . I was known as SPC Beal "THE FLAAAME" Shout out to Spc Durham on that one. LOL. In Dec of 1989, I was PCS'd to Fort Carson, CO, where things took a bad turn for personally. I hold that one of the best times in my life was spent here, if I could have known then what I know now, maybe things would have turned out differently for me, but I am glad my life has brought me to where I am now. Allot of the names I have mentioned are probably long gone ( RIP) from old age, or other.... I will NEVER forget all of you..."I left the Army, but the Army didn't leave me" my own personal quote. A message to speerhead67... Thank you so much for capturing this video and posting it. So many memories... DRAGOONS! "PRESENT ARMS!" Salute.
Loved the memories, I was with the C company 2/48 inf. from '66-68' [just missed Viet Nam] attended the NCO academy while assigned. Made E-5. I miss the guys and the country.

Thanks for the memories. I was stationed there from 76-78 at the first barracks going up the hill. I was in 122 maintenance Bn and in the small arms shop and fixed tank turrets .
Nice video brings back a lot of memories I was in Charlie Co back in 1977 to 1978 hell of post.I miss the buddy's I had I had a very crazy time there, thanks for the video thanks
What you call Delta Co. was, at least from 1977-79, known as Combat Support Company (CSC), Among other things, the Battalion's Scout Platoon was attached there. And there I was, for just shy of three years...and I had already completed a 4-year hitch in the Navy. (There was a woman involved...let it go). So, if anybody remembers a guy known as "Squid" from those long ago days, I'm still alive and well...well, kinda...Anyway, to all those out there with a 19D10 MOS, "Scouts Out!" (And Skin's In!)
Nice video. I was there 84-86 B/Co. 3/33. 2nd to the last building going up the hill on left. Mechanic, my M88 was a blast to drive. Some good times there. Beautiful country.
was there 75-76 bravo 1/33 sfc. harrison was platoon sgt. and my tank cammander. when we had time off yea back gate and no time your at the bar drinking , wild and great memories. will never forget that place and the men i served with. DW. TREAD HEAD FOREVER!
I was stationed there from 87 to 89....HHC 1-48th INF, "Blood and Guts". It really brought back memories....i was 18 yrs old. Had many friends from the Cav units...thanks for the video!! I still want to go there myself to see what its like.
I was there 1996 to 1958 I was in the CCB Band. Looks a lot different than when I was there. I always wish I could have gone back to visit. Thanks for the memories.
Wow! How cool! Was there 85-88 2nd Support Battalion 52D (still in power generation to this day, instructor for Generac and EGSA). The pond, running through the "cabbage patch" and all, great memories! Played in the band MoxNix and man, the NCO club would be Rockin'! Bwa Ha Ha Ha
Thanks for the memories!!! I was in C co 1st Bn 48th Inf from 1985 to 1990, left out just before they went to the desert. Brings back good time. was there when we got the Bradley Fighting Vehicles and DX the old M113s.
Thanks for the video. My Dad was bases there until his death in a car accident in 72. my mother was also there and was pregnant with me. It was cool to see where they lived and where I almost lived. My Dad was First Cav.
I was stationed there from Oct 86 until it closed. Got a European out and stayed for an additional 10 months until 11 December of 1991 when I came back home. I was in Bravo 3/33 Armor. When you saluted an officer, you said "Pickles sir!" That was so funny. They retired the colors and renamed us 4th, Bn, 8th Cav..."Mustangs sir!" was much easier when saluting. They changed just before we went to the CAT (Canadian Army Trophy) competition for tank companies. We won it for the first time.
Wow! Great Video. I was stationed here from '77 to '80. Scout Platoon, Combat Support Company, 1/33 Armor. My room overlooked the pond. Great memories. Thanks spearhead67.
I was in the 29th Scout platoon in the late 50s they changed to the 48th in 57? I think our job was to road guide the Reg. or any other troops to the training areas mainly Wildflecken ( my favorite ) or Grafenfier? -- forgot how to spell those.--- and then be the enemy for the exercise . And what you are showing on the tape is all strange , except for the buildings we lived in . In the winter we got our kicks watching civilian cars trying to make the hill of the circle I think most of the expanse of grass at the bottom was where we parked the tank , jeeps and other vehicles . Ah the memories , thanks for posting .
Fascinating to see footage of slow drive around Coleman Kaserne (from 2009)I served in HHC 2nd Bde. and C 1/33 Armor from Feb.'80-Jan.'82 when I PCS'd to Ft.Riley,Kansas.Regret not staying here to ETS which I did to return to Ireland to join police and from which I am about to retire after 32 years service(My MOS was 19E)
Nice seeing the old place again! I was 1/33 Armor HQ company - mortar platoon. 1984-1985. I lived in the first building on the right entering in the back gate. 6:38 point in the video - in front of the parade field. We used to run out the back gate all the way up the hill. One time we did some rappelling at the top. Spent a lot of time in the field at Grafenfoer, Baumhaulder, and one other one - can't remember. Saw the A-10 tank killer jets live fire once at Graf - very cool. We had the M-60 tanks and were just getting the new M-1's when I left. I was working the plotting boards in the 577 command track for the mechanized mortar section - 4 deuce. We partied hard in Frankfurt - Sachsenhausen - every chance we got. Thanks for sharing!
Nice! I am sorry but I can't remember any of the scout dudes now, even though I knew some then. We were probably there at the same time. Do you remember Captain Finney? Small dude - carried a stick - napoleon complex - HA! Some good memories hanging in town and taking the train to Frankfurt. Do you remember Hoenfels, Baumhaulder, and Grafenvoer training grounds?
i was there 82 - 84, learned how to rappel at top before BAD TOLZ (10th special forces) was it hill 132 we had to run up all the time?! sp4 murtomaki (sundagger22@yahoo)
Hello Spearhead67, Your memories brought back some very special memories. I lived in Waechtersbach as a kid and my uncle was the caretaker of our soccer team/field. Thank you for your close-up view of the old kaserne!
Thanks for the memories 1974 to 76 The formations were on the Top of the Hill in front of the barracks. That was a Mile Walk. However, I had a profile I could only walk 9 tenths of a mile. I live off post and drove up the Hill. CSC/HQ/PIO office 2D BN 48 3rd Armored Division Spearhead...1974 to 76... I had forgotten what it looked like almost. When I (ETS) I never had the chance to say goodbye to friends. Sergeant Johnson, Sargent London, Red, Allen, and Bianchi. Allen you were there for 6 years...Then you married a German girl and re-up for another 6 years. Unfortunately right after you got married she got on the plane and came to America. I'm sorry man. Spec 4 (E4) Chambers. Anyone recognize me?
Amazing how things change, I was assigned to CSC 1/48th Inf in 1976, was assigned to the RedEye section. Remember sharing the barracks with Scouts, Commo, Supply, and radar guys. Made some great friends,
I served with 3/61 ADA in Buedingen, but lived down the road from Coleman Barracks, and worked a lot with 2nd Brigade between 82-85. We went back to Germany over New Year's this past year, and spent New Year's Eve in Gelnhausen. Glad to see your video- when I went to the Kaserne, it was cloudy and foggy, but we could still see the old post- unlike Budingen, which has been fenced off and is still mostly desolate (the Cav track park is in use, though, by a construction company). Kind of sad to see Coleman civilian-ized, though. Didn't see a single reference to the Army ever being there. Where the chapel once stood is now a dance studio... no respect.
Büdingen has completely changed. Is open again but they put up houses and tore down a lot of buildings...or remodeled them. Airfield is gone...water buffalows own it :P
I was there in 67, 68 and 69 as a Army Brat!!! Good memories, mostly Thanks Right across from main gate was a motor pool and next to the motor pool was a concrete drainage ditch, a solider didn't want to pay a taxi fee after a night on the town, so he ran from taxi down that drainage ditch and fell in, knocked himself out, his shoulders were just as wide as the drainage ditch and he drowned in one inch water. My friend and I found him! Ran to main gate and UP's took care of it...
Coleman Kaserne received its name in 1950. It was named for Lt Kenneth W. Coleman, a Black soldier who was assigned to the 761st Tank Battalion, and who was killed in combat in the autumn of 1944 in NW Europe. He received the Silver Star.
Thanks for sharing! A nice trip down memory lane. Terry Showers Headquarters company medic 1/48 INF. "82-84". Loved that place and the henchen house! Blood N Guts!

I was assign HHC 1/48 Inf Division (Support Battalion) 80-82, Motor transport operator. We supplied you with Ammo and Mess Hall when you went to the field. I remember Delta's Mess hall. A lot of great memories.
I would presume the sculptured frieze above the front door of the Kaserne building @ (9 mins -30 Seconds ) in is that of 'Barbarossa' and his merry band....
I was in 1/48th Bravo company ( then 4/18th) or the other way around cant remember. but i did love having the chow in our building...i was there a few years ago and it change so much i barely remember everything. thanks for sharing. oh, i was there from 1987 to 1990
Guessing you knew SSG Paz who was in Delta first before going to Bravo? Only hung out with a few guys from Bravo like Lamb (we had a Lamb as well in Delta), Moya and Murrah
I was w/E Company 122nd Maintenance from APR 76 thru MAY 79. Didn,t know how much I enjoyed it until I was gone! The pond looks naturalized. It was drained in 77 due to the death of a new E4 @ HG Company. Had a cement bottom. Guess it was originally a catch basin. My wife worked @ the theater snack counter 77-78. Hoping to return one day soon. Sgt Mark Eggleston
Just came across this. 08.30.2019 I was company clerk at Co A, 1/48th, then in the motor pool for awhile, then HHC, 2d Brigade, S-1. Served under DeWitt C. Smith, and Army SGTM Walter M. Cootes. I can't begin to tell you all the trouble I got into and out of.
Was sent from D Co 5/8 INF 8th ID in Mainz (Lee Barracks) to B Co 4/18INF at Coleman Kaserne for operations Desert Shield/Storm. I remember you Jorge Deleon. Several of us were sent from 8th ID and made many good memories at Coleman Kaserne. 1990-1991
Wow the Memories was a Unit Police there back in 82 . Lived in the co-ed quarters with the MP's great job 4 days on 4 days off. We were the one directing traffic in and off post wearing the helmets with UP on it and bringing and folding the flag for Reveille and Retreat. AN HONOR.
Good memories. Co A 2/48th, 69' - 70', was at the top of the hill, what a drunkers walk. Almost always went out the back gate. Loved to walk the streets of the town. Morning formation was a trial.
HHC 2BDE from 64-67.Theres a lot of new buildings since I was there, the only buildings up the hill then was barracks for the 48th Inf. The building on the left past the PX. didn't exist then. Lots of changes.
I was with the 127th MP Co stationed on Pioneer Kaserne from '81-'83. We sent a shift of four MP's to Gelnhausen every 12 hours to work at the base because they didn't have a detachment of MP's there. We didn't have enough personnel assigned to send three shifts at 8 hours each. I remember it being a really long drive up there and back, though google maps puts it 14-22 minutes(?) I could have sworn it took almost an hour.
I was a medic at the clinic there, 71-72. Went back in 2006...German then. But the buildings are still there, which I appreciate.
My home for 3 years…..I’d give anything to have those days back

Hey. I was in Alpha 1/48. I came in the same day as Brown and Karen Willacy in the 45th in June 88. The major at division comes in the room and says " Washington, Willacy and Brown, you're going to Gelnhausen. Everybody else, congratulations you are going to the Rock!
When did you leave Gelnhausen?
1986-1988 HHC 1/48 Medic Platoon then in 1988 or 1989 HHC 4/18 INF Medic Platoon after the transition. We didn't have digital cameras back then, so thanks for recording this! Lots of memories in the 2.5 years I spent there! I was a medic for Mortar Platoon, Scout Platoon, Alpha & Delta CO and could smoke all the grunts on the 2-mile run!
Oh? I was in Alpha from 88-90. 2nd platoon. Washington
I was stationed in Fulda, just down the road a bit from you guys. I was in the 11th ACR, Blackhorse! 1981-1983. Best time of our lives and we didn't even know it.

I was in HHC / PAC S-1 then assigned as the Company Clerk in DCo 1/48th Inf. Ron my friend hung himself in the supply room. We were just young soldiers back then. 1984-1986. Captain Detrani and LT Nagel. I was SPC Lofton. 71L & 11B all the way! Thanks for the video. I finaly retired after 28 years of service. US Army.
Traveler just a heads up... D co has their own facebook page... set private.

So, if anybody remembers a guy known as "Squid" from those long ago days, I'm still alive and well...well, kinda...Anyway, to all those out there with a 19D10 MOS, "Scouts Out!"
(And Skin's In!)
Nice video. I was there 84-86 B/Co. 3/33. 2nd to the last building going up the hill on left. Mechanic, my M88 was a blast to drive. Some good times there. Beautiful country.

At 7:49 there used to be a WWII tank and half track parked on the right when I was there in 74-75.

I was there in 1966....1st/48 headquaters Recon. Went back in 94 to visit. A lot of memories
I was there then.
Wow! Great Video. I was stationed here from '77 to '80. Scout Platoon, Combat Support Company, 1/33 Armor. My room overlooked the pond. Great memories. Thanks spearhead67.
Bring back memories I was there in 1976-78 2/48 infantry 3rd Armor div Dragoons signal top of the hill.
Great memories I was there from 75 to 78 hq first 48 inf commo platoon
Thanks for sharing video. I was their in 1974-1976. C/S 1/48 infantry. 3rd Armor
Hey I was HHC 1/33 scout plt 84-86
I was in the scout platoon from 84 to 87. SPC Jones
Man this brings back some fun memories.
i was there 82 - 84, learned how to rappel at top before BAD TOLZ (10th special forces) was it hill 132 we had to run up all the time?! sp4 murtomaki (sundagger22@yahoo)
Hello Spearhead67,
Your memories brought back some very special memories. I lived in Waechtersbach as a kid and my uncle was the caretaker of our soccer team/field. Thank you for your close-up view of the old kaserne!
I was station there in 1976 -1978 as a young NCO in HHC 33 Armor. Fond memories. The trip of the spear!
Thanks for the memories
1974 to 76
The formations were on the Top of the Hill in front of the barracks.
Anyone recognize me?
i was there 75-76 bravo co. 1/33 do you remember the flag football turnament in 76 we won it all i played slot reciever . great times Don White sp4
Amazing how things change, I was assigned to CSC 1/48th Inf in 1976, was assigned to the RedEye section. Remember sharing the barracks with Scouts, Commo, Supply, and radar guys. Made some great friends,
I was there from 75 to 78 head quarter first 48 commo
Thank you so much for the video, it really brought so many great memories.
Wow great memories I was stationed there 86-89 thanks

Great video, thanks for the memories. 1/33rd, HHQ, Redeye Platoon, 1970-71, L. Akers
It was Great seeing my base again ECHO 1ST 48TH THANKS
Airfield is gone...water buffalows own it :P
awesome!!!... I was Aco 1/48th 1982-1984, so many memory's 🙂especially the dam walks up and down the HILL from barracks to track park...lol
Gators!
I was there in 67, 68 and 69 as a Army Brat!!! Good memories, mostly Thanks
Right across from main gate was a motor pool and next to the motor pool was a concrete drainage ditch, a solider didn't want to pay a taxi fee after a night on the town, so he ran from taxi down that drainage ditch and fell in, knocked himself out, his shoulders were just as wide as the drainage ditch and he drowned in one inch water.
Thanks for the memories. My father was the 1SG of Charlie Co 3/33 from 1984 thru 1987.
That was a nice installation. I lived in Ben Franklin Village Mannhein from 1960 until 1965.

I was assign HHC 1/48 Inf Division (Support Battalion) 80-82, Motor transport operator. We supplied you with Ammo and Mess Hall when you went to the field. I remember Delta's Mess hall. A lot of great memories.
Charlie Co. 2/48 and Delta Co 1/48th. '81-'83. I've looked at Coleman on Google Earth. Thanks for the video.
I would presume the sculptured frieze above the front door of the Kaserne building @ (9 mins -30 Seconds ) in is that of 'Barbarossa' and his merry band....
I rememeber always eating at our chow hall and heading up to yours for some additional at least once a week. Loved being at this place back then.
Thanks for the memories! Hhq 1/33 1970-71

HQco. 2/48 maintenance last bld 5th floor 1978-1981
Brings back memories I serve there in 1972
Just came across this.
Was there June 1956 to May of 1958. In the barracks next to the NCO club. Was the barracks that housed B co. 122 AOB and Headquarters CCB.
45th Med Battalion, Hanau Attached to 7th Med Hospital, Frankfort assigned to Glenhausen as a 91G Life was so good
nice place what work for theNCO in sixty and seventy as Chef Cook in Gelnhausen Ashaffenburg and Hanau Germany. ..Good Food. ....
Hats off to your brother chow was always way above par
Wow the Memories was a Unit Police there back in 82 . Lived in the co-ed quarters with the MP's great job 4 days on 4 days off. We were the one directing traffic in and off post wearing the helmets with UP on it and bringing and folding the flag for Reveille and Retreat. AN HONOR.
Good memories. Co A 2/48th, 69' - 70', was at the top of the hill, what a drunkers walk. Almost always went out the back gate. Loved to walk the streets of the town. Morning formation was a trial.
2/503d MP 1990-1991.... I lived in the building right across from the duck pond on the top floor. Brings back lots of memories.
At 6:44 is the building I was in from June 1981 till June 1983. 1st BN 33 AR, CSC Company. Men of War. 11 Charlie, we were on the top floor.
I was there from 72 to 74. HQ Co. 2/48 Inf. Running up that hill to the top barracks for morning PT was hell.
