Super underrated advice on asking them their spirit preference on basic drinks like margs, vodka soda, gin + tonics...easy upsell opportunity right there
Just started bar. Bar I work at doesnt use spouts or jiggers. They basically just make everything really strong and average cocktail is 15-18$ with included tip. Have you ever encountered this type of situation? I basically just fill a pint glass with ice, and fill with the liquors most of the way, and leave enough room to splash in syrups, sour, schnap, soda, or whatever. Also, when you encounter a req you aren't familiar with, do you ask how to make it, or look it up?
Sounds like you are possibly working at more of a dive bar, if there's no poor spouts or jiggers at all. If it's a 16 oz pint glass then just break the glass down into three different parts. 1/3 the alcohol, the middle portion any sort of mixers you need and then the rest would be any mixer such as Club Soda or Sprite/juices. There are some good, free apps on both the Android and Apple store (MyBar on Android is great) that you can use to look up a recipe if need be. Some people may know how to make the drink and others want so it's better just to look up the recipe or say you need to look for the liquor and when you're out of eyesight from them, take a look at the recipe :)
Hey SkullCat. First time writer, long time watcher/listener. I've recently started bartending, about once a week at a tiki/prohibition era (menu) bar. over 60+ cocktails. I'm having a hard time remembering recipes even when I study everyday. It probably doesn't help that i have short term memory ;) but do you have any tips that helped you along the way in your career?
Honestly most of these recipes have similar ingredients if not one thing changed to make it "different". Group all the drinks into different categories based on the main liquor ingredient (Vodka, Bourbon, etc.) and just start remembering the low ingredient ones first 🙂

Your channel should be bigger, keep it up. Your tips are very helpful. I recently went from working breweries to a full bar and all this is clutch.
I appreciate you! Hopefully some of these tips help you sling those drinks a bit faster.
Nice tips, I liked the eye contact one
It's definitely important to make sure they know you're paying attention and can get to them even quicker 🙂
